Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
I know, I know...everyone's life is over because the Redskins at 3-8 lost to the 11-0 Saints thanks to overpaid athletes and management that don't care about winning nearly as much about the Redskins as the fans do. Woe is all of us. Most Redskins fans predicted a devastating loss going into the game, and just as many were hoping for one a) because they wanted Gregg Williams to stick it to the Redskins and b) every loss is a step closer to kicking Cerrato to the curb.
Before we get to the smack down, let's look at some positives: We're only the second team this year to put 30 points up on the board against Genius Williams (so apologies to every Redskins fan out there that was rooting more so for Williams than the Skins today). Devin Thomas had a beast of a game (indirect props to Cerrato for drafting him and Hixon for coaching him). Davis has done a great job since Cooley went down being Campbell's go-to guy when he needs one. I'm really becoming a big Ganther fan. He's not a starter (meaning 25+ carries/game) but he knows what to do out there and he does it well. And of course Jason Campbell had another very strong performance (except for that INT) The Redskins have lost the last three game by seven points...combined. It doesn't get more frustrating than that. But if there's a positive here it's that the last two games have been the best offensive performances we've had since probably last September. And we're doing it with guys like Thomas, Ganther, and Davis leading the way...not Randle El, Portis, and Cooley. Still, it's time to lay the smack down. Laron Landry For every spectacular play...he screws up on five basic plays. I'd rather he be consistently solid then occasionally awesome. The Officiating I'd rather they just be consistent Shaun Suisham Truthfully, even before the field goal (which I never imagined he'd miss) I was hoping the Redskins would be a little more aggressive in the red zone after the DT facemask. But still, even with the conservative playcalling and the high snap there's no excuse for yet another miss in the clutch like that for Suisham. I don't like kneejerk reactions but this is a recurring situation it seems with Suisham...is it time to cut him and just sign Rayner back for the remainder of the year. It was a frustrating loss for sure, but most of never even gave them a chance to be in it long enough to even be a frustrating loss. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
JC played amazing today.. I dog him when he's bad so I have to give him credit for today. Ganther is proving to be a solid RB (BYE BYE CP). D played decent until the 4th quarter. Again we cannot create to's and it kills us. As far as D.Thomas and F.davis go...... WOW these guys are legit starters in this league.. Davis opens up the question of possibly trading Cooley... I know that sounds STUPID AS HELL , but we may need to look in to it.
SUISHAM... well I don't care to even talk about him anymore. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Everything about the game today was fantastic...
... Except the kicking. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
In most aspects of the game, I am pleased to see our boys looking like a group of PROFFESSIONAL NFL football players.
However, our Defense must, Must, F....N MUST learn to slam the damn door on an opponent!! 3 and out! substitute break it off in their ass for bend and don't break.........please |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Can't say enough about the strides made by Thomas and Kelly and Davis. This is a secondary that good receivers are supposed to dominate, so based on that, Thomas played like a valuable NFL receiver today. Who knew?
DT would have been the game MVP if we had that thread. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Moore you are not a RB, QB WR, or TE when you see that you are going to get tackled use proper fundamentals or go down.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Laron needs to be a strong safety, he obviously can't acclimate to the free safety position and it's killing us, but with that said every time I saw him make a play today I couldn't help of thinking about Troy polamalu. I think we are legitimately wasting his (what I think could be pro bowl) talent at free safety. I'd rather play a mediocre but consistent player at free safety and have Laron beast at strong safety.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
I agree completely. Great game, lost by a kicker. Again. No excuse - fire him.
But: 1) Our offensive line played good. 2) JC looked good because our offensive line played good. 3) Our WR & RBs looked good because our offensive line played good. 4) See #1. This is EXACTLY why I think we should draft O-line first, second and third next year. Jason Campbell and the team can play really well if he has time to throw and RB's have holes to run into. Btw, anyone else think Campbell had the benefit of playing against a G.Williams defense for years -- and could pick up coverages quickly against him? |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Forgot to meantion that I love Kevin barnes, the cb position is looking solid for a while

I hate when players on my team out-perform my tempered expectations for them. |

Yeah we just haven't found a good enough free safety to play along side him |

He'll come crawling back. Ya'll know that we complete him (as a player). |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
I thought JC has been playing extremely well the last several games, if he could have lead the team down for the win would have really really impressed me. Think the Bingo caller has had much more of a substanial impact than I originally thought. Im blown away the offense has played better without Portis, Samual, Thomas, Cooley...

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
1. Landry--Could not agree more. Time to shop him in the offseason. I'll take a 3rd rounder at this point for him. We are deep at safety and could even move Smoot to FS. Too much attitude, too many mistakes, no game changing plays....
2. Suisham. Yeah the snap was high but he has a long history of missing in the clutch. I am still pissed at him for that miss in Seattle a few years back. 3.THE DAMN STRETCH PLAY IN THE REDZONE. Enough with this play. We can't run it and it is always a momentum killer. I don't blame the coaches for the three runs prior to Suisham's miss but when the Skins were up 27-20 you can't run this play on 3rd down and goal. Take it out of the playbook now Sherman Smith. 4.Greg Blache and his defense. I know it's the explosive Saints but his "Bend Don't Break D" has broken down three consecutive weeks in the 4th quarter. He has got to do something different to get this defense to hold a 4th quarter lead. The Skins are a top 5 D for three quarters. But in the 4th they seem like they never stop anyone. Maybe Vinny can get Richie Petitbon to call defensive plays in the 4th quarter... 4. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
The entire Offense , Orakpo , Daniels and Doughty . The cowpukes come to town in three weeks , just in time for a Christmas present for DC < a win > .
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
I'm sorry, but I can't rip Moore on that play. Moore was down by contact and the refs botched the call. I still feel that Moore should be starting at FS over Landry. Move Landry to SS and lets see what Moore can do back there.

JC just cant win a CLUTCH MOMENT.. Don't get me wrong he played AMAZING today and destroyed GW's defense.. But it just seems like he can never pull out a GREAT drive for the win.. As far as CP, and Randy thomas go.... SEE YA some where else. I still think we could get a 2nd round pick for cooley. I doubt we even look at trading him but it couldn't hurt. F.D has proved that he can be a stud TE. |

You know I was just about to go and edit my original post, because I went back and watched the play and I don't blame him really |

DT would have been the game MVP if we had that thread.
I couldn't agree more about the young receivers. Davis became a much better player when he decided to run through tackles instead of hurdling them. Thomas and Kelly are both very difficult to tackle on the WR screen. I just hope that we keep playing agressively on offense. |

I'm glad you saw that. It really was a fluke play, and the refs didn't help much. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
The team overall played well. Devin Thomas chose a great time for his debutante party and other young players showed well. It is hard to fault too many people because we should have won.
We would have won were it not for a couple of fluke plays in a row (the punt and the Kareem Moore play). While both Barnes and Moore can be blamed, it is both freakish and harsh that the penalty for their actions was 7 points. We also would have won had our kicker shown up. I'm glad I'm not one of Suisham's kids. |

He makes good aggressive plays against the run when lined up near the line of scrimmage. I don't know that Moore has Landry's range, but I can't imagine that he's any more undisciplined. For a safety that we spent a #6 choice, Landry has been a major disappointment.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Can I lay the SmackDown on Moss for taking a Campbell "51" audible (slant route) and running a fade anyway?
We know you can (and did) beat the corner on that route, but your quarterback didn't call the play in the void to the inside so that you could just run your own thing. I'm sorry, but put Marko Mitchell in there, and the Redskins get a 7-8 yard completion at worst. |

JC played as well as we want him to play. He's not a Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady (when Brady was in his prime...not the Tom Brady that gave up last week). How many times, are you going to put an average QB in this position. - Patched up offensive line - Third-string RB with two guys off the street - Without his best receiving weapon - A beat up defense - Against either the best team in football or one of the top 3 teams in football with the conditions I have listed above. |

4.
I disagree though, I think he could be a force at Strong safety, and he could be te attitude we've been missing on defense, I just think he's a liability at te wrong position |

regardless of the down by contact Moore needs to have better control of that ball, yes he's trying to make a play, but once it clogs up he's gotta protect the ball. Still unbelievable bounces that cost us the game. |

You know, I used to think that but I would rather have Horton or Doughty at SS. They are players who have a better +/- ratio of plays compared to Landry and they have less penalties. And their salaries, probably combined, are cheaper. So I say just be done with Landry and draft a OG or RB with the 3rd you could probably get for him. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
Landry is clearly out of position, but still. How can you give up a long TD in prevent? WTF?
Whatever--this game was pretty amazing. I didn't think we could find new and creative ways to lose, but I was wrong. Boy was I wrong. The second that insane Kareem Moore play happened, I knew we were going to lose. That's pretty sad. Glad to see the kids finally having an impact, and the o-line play is just an amazing tribute to Buges. But wow. I thought I didn't have any balls left to kick the way this season has been going, but I was wrong. Ouch. |

Even before i wanted another qb it was to upgrade, not just to replace him like with a rookie qb. We are playing real good football with our young guys, throw in some better OL and we dont have to rebuild so much. Heres hoping they can keep Sherman calling plays next year. |

I (Reed Doughty) played good today.

If Eric Berry is still on the board during our 1st round pick, I would take him in a heartbeat. |

Negative ghostrider...we've seen how good our offense can be with a good line, and we are in desperate need of a franchise tackle. We've already used a lot of resources in the defense, and a good FO (that's the key, a good FO) should be able to find a good FS in the later rounds or free agency. However, you cannot pass up a franchise tackle like Okung. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Saints)
I think we can wait as far as the second round to address the OL, but with that said, it'd be stupid to pass up one of the sure things at OT for either a QB or a LB.
Eric Berry, on the other hand... |
