At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Ganther has played hard since joining the team but Rock has contributed as well. Who do you keep?
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
For me it's easy. I think Rock has been great depth at RB for the last several seasons but Ganther is younger and has proven himself a decent commodity as of late. I think Rock is right in saying that he thinks he won't be back next season.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Ganther. He's younger and it's time to turn the page
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
it should be more like keeping Ganther and Rock and saying goodbye to Betts who is 30 and coming from major knee surgery and a large contract.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Ganther easily hands down. He was a monster to tackle to day. Cut/trade Portis. Cut Betts, and Rock. Keep Ganther because he's younger and healthier, keep Mason or pick another in the off season, keep Alridge and make him our scat back.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
ganther right now it's no question, lets see him against nyg and dallas before we call him the golden one though
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Yes. You do keep them.
Both. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
I think that decision has already been made. If you read Rock's statements, he apparently thinks so to.
|
Yes. You do keep them.
Both.
No. Rock as long as lined up with someone else in the back field does ok, but he's not spectacular. Portis is old and beat up. betts is actually better then Rock but is starting to look beat up as well. Basically Portis, Betts, and Rock all came out of the same draft and all are close to 30. As Smootsmack said it's time to turn the page. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
keep em both and mason as well, ship portis and betts.
by the way for the record i say keep zorn and campbell as well. the last couple weeks have shown that even with injuries they are starting to get it and jell as a unit |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Much of what happens at the RB position will probably depend on the health of both Betts and Portis. Their situations have to be settled one way or another to be able to determine what moves are going to be neccessary.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
ganther
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Don't forget about Alridge.
Mason, Rock, and Ganther are all too similar for me. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Ganther. We've replaced what Rock does with a cheaper younger tandem of DT and Ganther.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
I thought it was funny how a few weeks ago I posted on one of these message boards, we should probably cut Wynn (I think) and get I think it was larry johnson or derrick brooks or chase daniels. And someone said "Ganther is the 53rd man on this roster and should be cut" I was quick to say "no this guy is good he's worth an extra look"
I was wondering who that was and what they think now, because I think honestly, this guy is the best running back we have, maybe even better than Portis (blocking is my only question I have about him) |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Without a doubt, Ganther.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
I LOVE how Ganther finishes runs... getting that extra 2 yards that the good pounders do.
You keep him at 15 carries a game & have a Mason, Aldridge, or 5th round pick splitting carries with him, and I think you are ok. I have always said, do not pay big for RBs... if you have a line that can run block, you can throw Joe Schmo in there and get yardage with holes to run through.... yet we owe Portis like 10 mil next year right? so this ALL may be moot as we may be stuck w Portis & Ganther mix. No longer a need for Cartwright or Randel El (who is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS). |

I remember thinking then, hey he blocks like Portis but he must not be able to run (trying to figure out why he was FA, but I think it was mostly because he is slow... lol... you see him get run down in no time on the one play today? lol) Regardless, he is a tough S.O.B. and will block and run hard... which will make him susceptible to injury, hence the need for him to split carries... but he can block |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
I really like Ganther and Rock and would love to see both of them back. My question is, can both of them hold up through an entire season? That I do not know, however I do think it is time to make some changes in our rb position.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Why is this an either or question? I understand for arguments sake, but why not keep both?
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
okay assuming you keep only one for the sake of disucssion (i agree why not both) i guess i'm in the minority: keep the rock. ganther's a better RB because we have jack squadoley for RB. yeah you can put thomas back for returns but rock does returns well, is the kick coverage ace, can run in a pinch, is absolutely the kind of locker room guy you want, and we can pick up an RB elsewhere (FA, mid-late draft, etc.). i just think rock is WAY underappreciated.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Let them both compete, but all things being equal, you have to like Ganther's youth. His balance was amazing on the long run after catch.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Unless it's the end of Rock's contract or something. Rock had a good game in Dallas running and receiving. In fact, I remember thinking after that game that they should have been playing him more on offense. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
we've shown we can play against top teams without portis or betts, i think we can keep both, and either keep betts or portis, or dump both for a new guy.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Ganther = Ryan Grant. I said it in another thread, another teams trash is our treasure. The Titans cast off could be a real contributor for us moving forward.
I say keep both Rock and Ganther as of right now. Our RB sitch is up in the air big time. Betts is coming off very serious knee surgery, Portis' health and contract are huge issues, and we still don't know if there will be a new CBA moving into next year. I've gotta think with his mileage, injuries, and huge cap numbers, an uncapped year will mean the end of Clinton's career as a Redskin. Can't say I'd bat an eye at his departure. |

Rock |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Keep them both.
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
From todays live performance I keep both...and I drop portis and maybe betts after preseason
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Neither, Toby FTW!!!!!1!!!
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Easy. You keep both, along with Mason, Aldridge and Fb's Sellers and Williams. Plus add in the high drafted RB this spring, snyderatto has never seen a offensive skill position player they did not want to draft, forgetting all about OL again.
The really interesting question and better thread title: Portis and Betts have a future with Redskins.?.? The other one is Randy Thomas, the guy can not stay healthy. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Keep Ganther...
Our Oline is actaully looking solid these past games with the younger guys in there and Williams at gaurd. In a dream scenario.. Trade Portis, El, and a late round pick for a 1st round pick Pick up a Olineman, and QB in the 1st. Toby Gerhart in the 2nd Add depth to our secondary and possibly LB in the 3rd. If I was Cerrato, this is what I would do. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
I think both.
Mason hasnt done much with his opportunities and his window is small. Portis (our VET), Ganther / ROOKIE in a balanced rotation should keep things fresh. Rock could sit 4th on the chart. Plus He can still return.. |

Seriously though, The OL did not play exceptionally yesterday, and the next two weeks will be real good benchmark tests for our team. Most of the OLine needs to go, in my mind, but if they stand up to NYG and Dal then I will gladly change my tune. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
I think Rock became expendable with the emergence of Ganther. Seriously...Rock is what 31? He would be good to keep as a backup but not if that means letting another talented back go.
Portis is likely finished. The way the other guys have been playing should prove that. Keep Ganther and draft a young back with the draft....that way we are set in the backfield... |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Just to point out...for all you Rock fans. In the past Rock has not done anything at RB. Now I know some will say "Oh thats because he was not given a chance" but keep in mind he was not given a chance for a reason. All his chances have come in preseason where he has done diddly against 2nd stringers. I think I labled him the TTB2. He dances East/West instead of North/South. Now don't get me wrong, I to have paid him a few good compliments. When Portis was injured the next game when "both" he and Betts were in the plays together he knocked off some good runs. Then Betts got hurt and we relied on Rock to carry the load. That game if I'm not mistaken Ganther had more yard and I think JC was either first or 2nd in run yards. Rock on the field by himself = disaster. Plus he's close to 30 yrs old. Time to turn the page on all 3 of our RB's. Time to get youth, speed, and health. Also Thomas has filled in nicely as a KR. Rock is replaceable.
In years past I have probably been Mason's biggest advocate. I now consede. Although I like him I have not seen enough of him for a reason and even he failed to get a lot of yards yesterday. My only reason for keeping him is because he is similar to Ganther size wise and running style, he just isn't getting it done like Ganther. Now if Mason proves me wrong in these last few games then keep him. Lest you all forget we also picked up Alridge. Shanahan spoke highly of him. Although he keeps getting cut and brought back I get the feeling the team was asked to pick him up for the future of the team....possibly by Shanahan. Just my feeling. Also Portis is old and now injury prone and quite possibly out due to career ending injury but I don't see how we could trade him due to those injuries or trade away his big contract. Now if next year is an uncapped year then I say we simply cut bait or pay the majority of his contract off and resign to a better deal then look to trade him. If I hear correctly we can't cut him until after June 1st. If we do it prior he costs us more if after I think it was 6 mill? Betts is the only one out of the old batch that I would keep, but with his injury who knows if he will be the same ground pounder he has been. Obviously keep Ganther If Mason is coachable keep him if not cut him pick up someone else in the draft Keep Alridge as our scat back. Can we bring back Dorsey also? I would love to see us play a team and have both in the back field and prior to running the play split them both out on either side as WR's. I think the other team would have a melt down. LOL. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
Sure didn't take long for people to turn on Rock... again.

Don't look at me....I never stopped. Even after his nice game "with" Betts a few games ago I said don't get too high on him. He sucks by himself. But if we are looking towards to future of this team and trying to get younger "everywhere" then all 3 RB's need to go. I said that last year as well although I also said Mason was our man. LOL. |
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
The guy has proven his worth over the course of his 8 seasons here. I'm not going to even bother addressing this silly crap about him "sucking".
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
change is gonna happen at the rb position next year for sure. if there is a cap i could see portis, ganther, young rookie combination. no cap portis is gone. i didn't see the game, did rock return kicks against the raiders?
|
Re: At Seasons End Ganther or Rock Who Do You Keep?
It has to be Ganther, so much potential and he's young. I love Rock as a player, he's a true Redskin, but he's had many chances and Ganther has just outplayed him.
Portis/Ganther full timeshare next year. Portis will be able to stay healthier hopefully and they'll make an explosive tandem. |
