Quarterback
Ok...so before you roll your eyes thinking this is another bash Campbell thread, just wait....with the imminent changes that are about to take place in this offseason, it's only natural to consider the most important position on the field. As of now, Campbell will be a restricted free agent after this year. If someone like the Browns or Rams or Raiders offer him a decent contract, do you think Bruce Allen has seen enough to match it? I think we all know Danny's view on Campbell.
Or would you be willing to roll the dice with drafting one of the qb's in the draft and starting with him, OR having him back up and let Collins be the starter until the rookie seems ready. Collins has always come in and looked good off the bench, but could he be our Kurt Warner? Or Rich Gannon?? Is there still any hope of Colt Brennan? |

I really, really hope Bruce Allen changes the way things are done around here. |

Once we have another option locked up or get good value for him, he's gone. If we're unsuccessful in either of the above options, he'll stay on a 1-2 year deal until we find his replacement. EDIT: P Jesus....no hope. |
Re: Quarterback
As I stated earlier We will sign a tender on Campbell maybe for a 1st and 3rd if a team takes a chance on that they can have him. Otherwise he holding the spot for Bradford
|
Re: Quarterback
IMO Bruce probably saw enough last night to decide we need a o-line in the worst way. Honestly i have no clue about JC love him his class, courage, commitment to the team. But i do know Breannan is not a Shanny WCO kind of guy not big, doesn't have a cannon arm & he is Zorn's project. After that fake fg try last night everything Zorn suggested brought in is out if i'm DS.

Given Danny's current hiring modus operandi, they should go ahead and put up a locker for Bradford, huh? |
Re: Quarterback
If this is an uncapped offseason, then Campbell will be restricted and I do not think that many teams would be willing to give up a pick if we matched an offer. Also, I don't think there are any QB's who could come in next season and be a significant improvement over Campbell (whether it be a FA or a rookie). With that being said, I am all for drafting a good QB, however, there is still hope for Brennan in my opinion and I think that Offensive Line is a much greater need especially considering the fact that Chris Samuels might be done for his career. I think with new leadership and more importantly a bolstered O-line and more experience/chemistry from our young recievers, there is no reason why we can't make a playoff push in 2010 with Jason Campbell at the helm.

The writting is on the wall. His doctor works for the Skin's, and the fact that he has an injury in his throwing arm, makes him an ideal player to fall on draft day hopefully giving us the opportunity to sneak back in the first a-la browns/ Quinn, ravens/Oher, green bay/ Rodgers and pick him up later in the first. |

How drunk are you? |
Re: Quarterback
How drunk are you?
not at all drunk. If he is trully a RFA this year don't we set the compensation tender and if another team picks him up they have to fork over the picks? |
Re: Quarterback
NO way in living hell Campbell goes for a 1st round pick....seriously man...
I see a high 3rd rounder for him...which we should take if someone offers. Colt is back in the mix next year...let him and Collins battle for the starting job, and let the rookie QB mature on the bench until it is time to see game action. We don't need another sack dummy like Patrick Ramsey.. Seriously if they upgrade the line, Collins could be very, very good for 1 season with our new QB looking over his shoulder. People are worried about TC's age, but you shouldn't because he is physically like a 30 year old because he hasn't taken the pounding or abuse on the field.... |
Re: Quarterback
People are worried about TC's age, but you shouldn't because he is physically like a 30 year old because he hasn't taken the pounding or abuse on the field....
A very slow, very weak armed, 30 year old. A couple deep strikes when the D has been playing up all day because the starting QB can't go deep with any consistent success is not the measure of an NFL starter. Let's not forget the Seattle game 2 years ago, the fact that Collins is 12/23 for 144 yards on the year, and looked about the same as JC against the Chiefs and Falcons.
Collins is a career backup, get him out of here. |
Re: Quarterback
Even if the Redskins decide to tender Campbell, whatever compensation they set for him is just a starting point for discussions. Other teams wouldn't necessarily be locked into that
|
Re: Quarterback
Lets just hope Allen signs 1-2 OL in F/A and drafts 2 more in April . Maybe get lucky in rd 4 and find another RB who can make some explosive plays , that would make the QB's job much easier . BEAT DALLAS !!!!
|
Re: Quarterback
I think JC will/should stay, he is really the best option by far over any vet option availible and may come availible. TC is old and time to go, so im also for picking up another QB in the draft, but not in the first two rounds (unless Colt would somehow slide to us in the second).
|
Re: Quarterback
I think it would be dumb to not at least tender JC.
|
Re: Quarterback
Jason Campbell has been one of the most difficult QB's to "truly" evaluate, mainly because of all the breakdowns surrounding him. The sum of his games as a starter have been uneven at best. I would not like to see him walk without some form of compensation so I would deffinately tender him.
|
Re: Quarterback
j.c is not the qb to lead us to the promise land, hell of classy guy,but he is not are answer at the qb spot, how about j. clausen from ND as are next qb?

There's no reason for Shanahan (allegedly) to come in and keep a 39 year old Collins, a 3rd stringer who barely made the team and was on IR anyways and a guy who was picked up in week 10 of the previous season. I'd expect the new coach to either re-sign Campbell or sign a younger veteran QB (Kellen Clemens?) and draft a QB in the 2nd or 4th rounds. I also wouldn't be at all surprised, especially if it's Shanahan, if we re-signed Campbell, traded for Sage Rosenfels and drafted a QB. Rosenfels was pushing Schaub for the Texans job a couple of years back and knows the offense. That would provide a quality backup for JC and legitimate competition if he somehow struggles in camp. |
Re: Quarterback
Obviously they need to get an offensive line otherwise it doesn’t matter who you have as a QB because your going to get him killed. But if they can get some o-line help why not see if they can make a move for Matt Leinart? I think giving the right situation and a change of scenery he would evolve into a good QB. I would imagine that Arizona has those plans for him sitting behind Warner but who knows perhaps he as wore out his welcome there? and I would probably cost a number of draft picks. Just a thought.

Re: Quarterback
why not trade the number one pick for more second rounders, make the tough decision to give up cooley for a 2nd and 4th (or something like that) and have enough picks to both build up the line as well as pick up a decent QB in the second or third round.
Why are people so sold on Clausen, Bradford etc. For every Matt Ryan, there are like 5 Ryan Leafs. We could have just as much success with a qb in the second. O line is a lot less hit and miss in my opinion and should be our primary focus |

I totally agree |
Re: Quarterback
if he is tendered a contract, does that guarantee him a certain pay? or is just if someone signs an offer sheet?
|
Re: Quarterback
The focus of our offseason needs to be the building of much new and improved O-line and then decisions about a depleted RB position. QB IMO is far down the list at this point.

Re: Quarterback
What do we do if there IS a CBA extension and salary cap? We'd have to franchise him and that's pretty expensive, isnt it?

Please explain in detail. From my understanding if another teams makes an offer we can match that team. If Soup takes the other team we're compensated draft picks. Is this because Soup was a number 1 or because the other team would be giving us they're picks. Who gives the Skins the picks? |
Re: Quarterback
A new coach means ANOTHER new offense for JC to learn. Isn't that the reason his supporters give for his lack of development? Even with a new line, he would have to start over and learn a new playbook (and yes a new version of the WCO means a new playbook)...rendering him again uneffective. I would hope that Allen and his team would tender JC and find the best trade value from a QB starved team like the Bills, Rams, 49ers or Browns. I would be estatic if we secured a high 2nd round pick (the Rams for instance allowing them to draft Suh with their 1st) and were able to use it to get Colt McCoy who Kiper sees as a prototypical Shanahan QB a la Jake Plummer. Say what you want about the QB from Texas...he is a proven leader, has no fear of scrambling, has proven he can take a whipping, and when the game is on the line he puts drives together, not to mention his illustriuos resume and years of starting experience. Him with an upgraded line and a run first offense could be pretty good for a couple of years while he develops and we build the surrounding talent. Bring in a veteran FA to start in 2010 until the rookie is ready (if possible). Release TC and give CB another preseason to see if he can be a contributor.

Well, for example, let's say the Redskins say they want a 2nd and a 6th for Campbell. San Francisco calls and says we're interested but we only want to offer a 3rd. Then the Redskins ok, well what if we throw in Chris Horton then what can we get? And the Niners say two 3rds (2010 and 2011). So yeah we're compensated but not necessarily at the price we set. |
Re: Quarterback
I don't think that JC has ever been in a position to succeed in DC. Bad coaching, O line, streaky receivers, new coaching, etc...
He may not be our future, but I think he will be a good QB somehwere. |
Re: Quarterback
In the latest NFC east huddle on ESPN John Clayton reports that in a uncapped year with Campbell as a RFA he believed Campbell will be tendered with a 1st and 3rd compensation set up as I stated earlier.

Don't quote me on this dmek, you may have to ask our cap guru. Acording to reports there will be four different tender offers for RFA's for 2009. Low Tender - Right of first refusal & origional draft pick $1.01 mil Middle Tender - Right of first refusal & 2nd round pick $1.545 mil. High Tender - Right of first refusal & 1st round pick $2.198 mil. Highest Tender - Right of first refusal 1st & 3rd round picks $2.792 mil |

Whatever the RFA tenders end up being next year, we have to offer him at least that much. So it looks like any team that matches would have to give us a first and a third (At very least, a first). Basically, anyone who wants Campbell is going to have to engage in some sort of a sign and trade with Bruce Allen, where they will agree on the compensation. |

Re: Quarterback
Yeah the one thing where I think Bruce Allen will offer instant improvement is where we will get fair market value on our trades. None of this Jason Taylor for a second rounder, TJ Duckett for a third, or even with the Pete Kendall trade, great trade for us but we managed to take a team desperate to dump him and give them a conditional pick that appreciated into a fourth.

When I post something it's not a matter of what I want but what I think the team will do. Think about what I am saying in the post. If Bradford falls in the draft because of his shoulder and after we use our first round pick on the best tackle available, I could see us go back into the first to pick up Bradford. Hopefully only in a trade giving up next years 1st and 3rd |

Or would have signed him to the lowest tender virtually giving him away, and making it easy for any other team that showed interest. |
