Real Redskins?
Who do you guys think are definatly in Gibbs plans and standding out as real redskins? Mostly they seem to be oon defence.
Smoooooot stands out but need to get his $$$$ this year he and Springs looks to be a great tandem. Wynn, Griffin, Pierce and Washington all look like long term players here. On offence Jansen obviously, Portis possibly but i am not sure about Rock, which is a shame, or Betts. Cooley looks like a Gibbs guy and was a Gibbs pick turning out okay so does Sellers and maybe Royal will show he can be the other TE outlasting Rasby and Baxter. Coles and Gardner look fine not outstanding but Gardner is really putting in a good year... is he coming upto a contract year? Thrash is definatly a Gibbs guy despite loosing us the game on Sunday and Jacobs looks like he could break into the line up soon with good work habit and excelent rout running . McCants though may be on his way and may have played his last game as a Redskin already. The biggest area of concern is QB he is standing behind Brunell, at least publically which is great but something tells me he is not convinced about any of the guys he has. It will be interesting to see what happens down the stretch. On special teams Morton, who i thought was a shoe in to be out of here in cap moves next year has shown excelent character, was showing some sparkle as the year went on and instead of going home to like his wounds once lost for the year has said he wants to come into Redskin park to help any way he can. Hall is okay but unfortunatly injured and Kickers in gerneral don't have much love if they suffer after comming back from injuries. |
Solid assessment. I would agree that the majority are gys on defense, including guys like Lott, Clark, Marshall.
I believe Garnder's contract year is next year. He works hard. I think he's definitely a Gibbs guy. |
i think all the WRs except mccants are sticking around... they haven't had great years due mainly to bad QB play and a scheme that's only been sending out 2 guys in its initial going...
barrow's toast at this rate, i think bowen (even though he still sucks in coverage), lavar are safe, in fact most of the D including its 2nd stringers... the oline may be completely different by next year (except for jansen)... they haven't been bad, but they haven't been good either. I don't really think he'll can the entire line, but there's 5 guys on that line right now that he could fire and i wouldn't be surprised or angry/questioning why... Portis, smoot and springs, imo are the safest... portis is great blocker (for an RB... he's super fast too, go watch the clip where he was 5 yards behind coles and was able to run past him and totally pancake a guy in his way), and portis can catch. betts? rock? mccants? those are three from last year that may be gone... gardner has improved 100% in the last few games... no drops and good catches... baxter is already gone again. |
The sad thing is Barrow and McCants are rapidly losing trade value and they have might big contracts right now. Going to be hard to get anything for them!
I hope we have enough free money to pay Smoot with that huge contract our QB has. |
Didn't the trade deadline already pass?
|
Im talking about when the season is over. We're going to want to unload them but their contracts are big for putting up goose-egg numbers.
|
Yeah nobody is going to want to trade for Barrow or McCants.
|
miami or SF or chicago etc could use mccants...
they'll be 2nd string/backup value though... |
I think if they could get something for McCants, which they won't, they'd pull the trigger, but I think they may wait a year to see if Barrow can recover.
Wynn has been playing very well this year but I'm not sure if he is a 5 million dollar player, which is what he gets. The fact that the cap hit wouldn't be huge if he was cut makes him a target. The Brunell contract sucks ass - there is no getting around it. If he had any decency, he would renegotiate his contract at the end of this year to make it MUCH smaller but that would never happen. Based on contracts, talent, and Gibbs-player qualities, here are our long term guys I think: Offense: Jansen, Portis, Coles, Cooley, ?? Defense: Smoot, Arrington, Griffin, Springs, Bowen, Washington, Wynn, Pierce. I think if Sean Taylor extracts his head from out of his ass, you can put him on that list also. Samuels is really questionable considering his huge cap number and his sub-pro bowl caliber play. Gardiner is sort of tough to figure. He has been playing well, but I'm just not sure if he is a Gibbs-type player. Finally, Ramsey is the big question mark. I am convinced that all this talk of Gibbs having no confidence in Ramsey being able to get it done is a bunch of bullshit. Ramsey is a young quarterback in a new system and Gibbs has NEVER put a guy in, in this situation unless he had no other choice. |
I think you guys are overestimating McCants' market value.
Even if someone wanted to trade for him we're not going to get much in return. He hasn't shown much except that he's a guy with potential, and you can say that about a ton of guys around the league. |
I agree with Matty 100% - he hasn't proven anything.
You've got to remember there are 32 teams in this league and they all have guys with potential who we've never heard of. |
mccants does have 6 TDs in a season though as a number 3...
gardner is a gibbs player btw, first in, last out at practice, etc etc... i think he and thrash stick around, and taylor will be here too... he has to be working hard to keep up with LC, DG, and JT... cause those three are all supposed to be workaholics. On D, i think they keep a lot of the 2nd string guys too... most of them have worked out pretty well... they seem high on ryan clark... warner/pierce have played well... noble, lamar, etc etc |
Offense
Brunell (unfortunately) Portis Thrash Gardner Coles Cooley Royal Jansen Thomas Raymer Defense Griffin Salave'a Noble Wynn?? (pretty nice contract, but hasn't really lived up to it) Daniels Washington Arrington Pierce Marshall Smoot Springs Taylor (if he can stop drinking & driving) Bowen |
McCants had 6 TD catches one year, wow let me hold back my enthusiasm. Not trying to be a jerk here but who cares? Isn't it all about what have you done for me lately? And lately the guy can't even make it to the active gameday roster. I don't think teams around the league are overly impressed with what he did last year compared to him riding the pine this year.
I'm not trying to dish on McCants, I like him but he isn't anything to get too excited over. And I can't see any other team giving up more than a very late round pick for him. |
If I remember correctly we also gave McCants a larger contract in the off-season. Money well spent.
|
I've said this before put mccants as apass catching tighend on downs to see what happens... we need to atleast give him a look for what he's getting paid. Samuels although many of you don't want to admit it is a Gibbs guy as well I'd cut Barrow now or force him to retire. Brunnel should be gone at the end of this season hopefully snyder will step in. Can u see brad smith, matt leinart in a skin jersey next season. we have to many weapons on offense to be this sadd. so there will be a drastic change

We have a lot of bullet's but no gun. |
diehardskin2982:
With regard to Barrow, I don't know how you "force him to retire". Do you kidnap his dog and make that the ransom? Matty: Have you come over here to the dark side with me? "McCants had 6 TD catches one year, wow let me hold back my enthusiasm. " Folks: I can't read Joe Gibbs' mind so I don't know which players he holds in high esteem despite their on-field play in the most recent game. But I suspect that Sean Taylor is trying his patience more than a little bit. |
I had to fill in for you there SC, glad you're back, I can feel my optimism rushing back
;) |
Gibbs guys:
Brunnel, Jimoh, ... :party-smi J K |
Who cares about this talk about Gibbs' guys and true Redskins
Gibbs sucks anyway ;) |

i never siad he'd go for a 1st rounder now did I :P All i said was that a lot of guys have potential, but he's actually got some production to prove he could be somewhat useful to crappy passing teams like oakland or miami... |
This is what you call a real Redskin......
Smoot hopes to sign long-term contract Washington Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot, a free agent-to-be whose stock continues to rise each week, said yesterday he hopes to sign a long-term contract extension with the club. "I want to be here, man. I'm a Washington Redskin," said Smoot, who is in the final year of his contract. "I feel like I've put too much work here losing. I want to see those golden days. When they come, I want to be in the midst of it." "He's a leader by the way he plays," Gibbs said. "The Chicago game, not many people would have done what he did. ... For me, he's been someone I think is a real Redskin. He's our kind of guy and is a big part of the team." The two sides have not begun discussing a new contract. I hope we resign him... |
Smoot will be a top priority, I'd be very surprised if we don't lock him up

The only redskin I am convinced has any trade value at all is Lavar but with his knee injury many teams may not want to take the gamble.
|
any team would take the gamble, its not career threatening at all... any team would take smoot or springs, marcus washington, S taylor or C griffin too... as well as maybe uhh... portis coles or gardner ;)
come on... |

What about Samuels? Coles? Portis? Ramsey? Jansen? Thomas? Washington? Smoot? Springs? Taylor? Come on guy.... |
would somebody take Brunell? Pleeeeeeeese?
|
Just as a thought Snyder locked Jansen up super quick a couple of years back . When players want it and Dan wants it money is no object and i think Smoooooot is a big priority but in general he doesnt start negociations in season . Also Smoot changed agents early this year to Snyder friendly guy which is encouraging.
|
how did Ramsey play the one time he played during the season? i seriously forgot.
|
Smoot will get the tag if he doesn't get the extention.
|
bedlamvr:
It is NOT good from an agent's perspective to be known as "owner friendly". None of them cultivate that image because it doe not help them get new clients or keep old ones. Granted, some agents are so "owner hostile" that it hjurts tham, but if Smoot's agent is "too friendly" he is on his way out of the agent business. jbcjr14: Just as I tried to explain last year, putting the franchise tag on someone does not mean very much. Let's see, we had a franchise player here last winter and what that tag accomplished was that it allowed us to trade him and a 2nd round pick for a running back that we threw $50+M at. Boy, that was effective. And we had signed away a franchise player from a divison rival for about $35M but when we cut his sorry-ass last year he went back to that team on a 1-year deal worth about $1M. Franchise tags often don't mean squadoosh... |
