Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Like a person with a powerful weapon scared to use, is the new Front Office Gun shy? Has Bruce Allen and Shanny been overly patient or doing the right thing in the uncapped year? Discuss your view of the moves made so far or lack of...

I am trying not to come across as too much of a dick but isn't this thread just a tad bit of an overreaction?
We cut 10 guys out of the gate which doesn't seem like a "gunshy" move. We have had at least 6 guys in and signed one. We have also signed several of our own. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Agreed. We are making moves. Just we as redskins fans don't know how to have patience when it comes to fa.
|
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Plus there are still a lot of guys out there still that I think the skins are definitely interested in. I'm curious to know how larry foote's visit to washington tonight went... I'd be ecstatic if we signed him. I agree with pocketsstraight, this seems like a bit of an overreaction...

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Someone, Schneed or CC, correct me if I am wrong, but even though this year is an uncapped year, and sure it is more likely than not that next year there will be a strike or shortened season. However, many don't realize that when this thing settles there will be a salary cap again. So why spend like there is no tomorrow when no one knows what tomorrow holds? I mean why spend all that money for one season and then almost totally explode the team to get under the cap again...

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
I'm with you Pocket. People are totally overreacting and want the Redskins to sign every two-bit free agent available. I like this approach and the reality is we're not going to address every need in this free agency period or this draft. It just isn't going to happen.
This front office is taking a very measured, systematic, and (emotionally) detached approach to building the roster. If Jason Campbell steps up his game just a little and we add one good offensive lineman, I think the pieces are in place for a serious playoff run. You have to figure the difference in coaching alone will net us at least 3 games. Breathe guys, breathe... |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
This threads different then all the other new threads(Parker/Portis combo, WR/KR) that could have been discussed in the free agency mash-up Gtripp created.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
I'm sure they're expecting more cuts and maybe some better players to become available. Rosters will change before the season starts.
|
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
People are spoiled when they have big incomes and would wreak every firm on the planet if they had their way. Rather than make optimal decisions and try to drive down the cost of production, they rather throw money away for inputs(labor) that won't be lasting long ANYWAY. It's like paying "brand-new" price for factory equipment that's been used for 10 years.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
You know whose fans are like this most offseasons, the colts, chargers, vikings, saints, steelers, cardinals, ravens...you see a trend here.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
I don't think gun shy is the word. I'd say prudent is more like it. With all the tenders around the league, many of the "available" players would cost us a pretty penny in draft picks. I for one am happy with the way things are going thus far. I would have liked us to make a move for Dansby, but that's pretty much it as far as the big name FA's.
I think we're so accustomed to the same ridiculous spending season after season that we just feel weird when we act like most of the other teams around the league. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Gun shy?
Allen and Shanahan have both been around the block a few times, pretty sure they know what they are doing. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
It will take a couple of years (at least) for the new regime to overhaul the roster. We fans might as well be patient, grab some snacks, and enjoy the slow ride.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Mass amounts of Redskins fans are having to kick their "Vinny Crack" addictions this year of 2010 free agency.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Why do you say they are gunshy, just because they didn't take any "sexy" picks? Most of the FAs taken are 30 and older. The FO obviously is thinking long term ie youth mixed in with some serviceable FAs like Hicks. We might yet land a good LT, G, or S via free agency.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Per John Clayton:
The Redskins dropped $63 million of dead salary cap pro-ration with the retirement of Chris Samuel and the releases of veterans Rock Cartwright, Todd Collins, Randy Thomas, Latrell Betts, Cornelius Griffin, Antwaan Randle-El and cornerback Fred Smoot. If there were a $123 million salary cap, the Redskins would have been $39 million over the cap after those transactions. For cash, the Redskins cut their payroll to $70.6 million, fourth-lowest in the league. Knowing Snyder, that number will grow.
The FO has a plan and it looks like its take more into account than how fast ink takes to dry. To me it looks like they are making moves for the future. I don't care if there's a cap or not, fiscal responsibility is much more important after seeing all the empty seats in FedEx this year. A couple million here and there for mediocre/stopgap players will limit what we will spend when some one we want/really need does come along. Like a few others said earlier the skilled FAs are older than what we need to reload, or whatever you want to call it. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
There really isn't much quality available out there. Do you want the Skins to sign players just for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses? This is what should have been done in the last 10 years.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Thread needs to be retitled to something like "Thoughts on the new front office strategy." Asking if the front office is gun shy is to much of a leading question and something I'd expect from another Redskin fan site.
Mass amounts of Redskins fans are having to kick their "Vinny Crack" addictions this year of 2010 free agency.
People don't realize that Vinny was basically, well....us, for lack of a better word. If you took your traditional Madden franchise owner and gave him a GM job, he'd be Vinny. Trading away draft picks, throwing money at players, ignoring the O-Line because the speed of your running back is 100 times more important, etc. And keep in mind this so called frugality might be short lived Apparently (God I can't believe I'm about to say this) next years (ow) free agent class (owwww) is going to be better (*bang*). Still it's a smart strategy. Last I heard we might be as much as $29 million under what would have been the 2010 salary cap. I also heard someone else point out that we're not paying outsiders more then the guys already on our team that did their jobs, rather then paying them more because they happened to hit free agency at the right time. I admit if they acted like this all the time it might get annoying, especially without the wins to back it up, but for now it's a breath of fresh air.
HE ONLY DID IT CUZ HE LOVES US!!lc :embarrass
WE'RE NOTHING WITHOUT HIM!!!! |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Im blown away by the criticism of the FO already. Im floored.
We just broke up the tandem of Vinny and Danny Boy that drove the Skins to a rock bottom with their general plan of F the draft, lets try and buy a championship and installed class act and well respected GM Bruce Allen and a coach who has won 2 superbowls. And in the first week of free agency their going to be called gun shy b/c we havent done the typical overpay for shitty play on the field. The funny thing is less than a handful of team have made any type of "splash" in free agency, so we are acting as normal, think before you act, have a plan, franchise. We should be sooooo excited about this. |
Gun shy?
Allen and Shanahan have both been around the block a few times, pretty sure they know what they are doing.
People have become so accustomed this time of year to the Redskins signing FA's, it's something they seemingly can't get over. The team will be rebuilt in increments not in the first few days of free agency. It's so good to witness the approach now being taken. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Man that dead weight we got rid of......Wow it opened my eyes. We were carrying alot of dead weight. I am glad Bettis is gone.

Just ask Plaxico. Thoughtful choices and discretion are a good thing for DS to be seeing. I especially hope that he will learn from this experience how to keep this franchise solid for the next 40 years, not just under MS/BA. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
If there were anybody at a position of need available that didn't get wildly over paid I'd be concerned but that isn't the case. I love the fact that this front office has decided not to sign FA's just for the sake of making a splash or to appease a ridiculously impatient owner or fan-base.

When I look back at how competitive we were in most games last year save for a few bad breaks here and there, we could easily have been at least an 8-8 team. It's just encouraging to see a FO structure with a plan as opposed to a fix. The time has come when all the (good fit's) as we love to refer to them as, will have to fit someplace else. Vinny is gone, hopefully to never return. |

I would also add that it's not just about the cap. We may think Snyder has bottomless pockets but it's not secret that some of his ventures (6 flags e.g.) have not been doing well. I'm sure revenue at the stadium was down this year. It looks like they have a plan, which entails a budget that Allen has set w/the Danny's blessing. As the Peter King article mentions, Allen didn't want to spend too much or get impulsive in free agency. I like it so far, sign players that are w/in your budget parameters rather than trying to outbid for 1 or 2 guys then having to restructure every year, etc. If Vinny were still here I don't know if Peppers would be a skin, but I bet Clifton & Pashos would be. We would've overpaid for both to try & get the quick fix of the o line. |
Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
The FA pool this year was crap. Only a few difference makers and not at positions where we really had needs. Why accumulate more of what we had just cut? A bunch of average players that we'd be kicking ourselves over in a few seasons after 8-9 games a year with them.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
Let's also not forget that danny et al weren't big spenders in free agency every year as it seems now most people are presuming. Look back at each year & you'll see highs & lows.

Re: Is the new Redskins Front Office Gun Shy?
It's about time that we build the team patiently for the long haul, emphasizing the draft and making opportunistic signings like Hicks. I have vastly more patience with a FO that builds this way than with Snyderato trying to buy the trophy.
