Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Shanahan's interview was outstanding. Loved the quote:
“I think you take a look at what’s really important with a team. Who has put the team first?” ... “I guarantee you Clinton will be there,” he said. “I know Clinton too well. He’ll be there and kick off the offseason on the right note. I want my leaders to be there and hopefully we’ll have 100 percent participation. If not, I’ll be disappointed.”
He doesn't seem like the kinda coach who likes to be disappointed! |

No real suprise for me.

Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
I'm happy to see this. Rogers and Portis are way too valuable to our franchise to give up. If not playing wise they are in the locker room.

Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
from the ultimate news source of Twitter:
RedskinsInsider RT @Rich_Campbell #Redskins CB Carlos Rogers texted abt meeting w/Shanahan: "I got a lot of stuff off my chest and things worked out fine." |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Next up for Carlos: ball-catching classes.
|
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
LOL, for sure!

Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well

Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Im really interested to see how things go on monday. I'm not worried about Portis in the right coaching he will play up to his level. I believe he has something left in the tank but he is the type of player that needs a disciplinarian coach. Zorn was too weak of a HC to motivate portis to do good for himself, work out, practice, etc. Shannahan will keep him together.
The player I'm interested in seeing if he will show up and participate is Laron Landry. Landry is notorious for not showing up for voluntary activities. He didn't with Gibbs, nor with Zorn. He most likely will try to pull the same stuff with Shannahan so it will be interesting to see how he hadles dirty 30. |

Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Carlos kind of reminds me of a woman... no offense in a test-related regard, but just emotional
he's got to get shit off of his chest regularly and then all will be well.. something tells me that player feedback/one-on-one has been stifled for awhile with the coaching staff not that it should be a revolving door, but get in, say what you need to say, hear what the other side has to say.. then work towards it |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Im sure a lot of the guys on this board, myself included, are just hoping these guys put their egos aside, realize that they are coming off of a 4-12 campaign and just realize that until they put up a second round win in the playoff, they have no right not to give 110%

If he doesn't show up on time I can see them sending his rights to another team, to send a message to the others. |

that's big time rban no matter what they need to figure out a way to do things differently, do them effectively, and make us respectable |

Does Portis just appearing there count as participation??

In Shanahan's words, I think Mike would be "disappointed" by that outcome. I was wondering about Landry too. Shanahan was clear 100% is everybody, and well 98% is ......... not. I believe if anybody wants their ticket out Ashburn punched, the first step is to miss this work out coming up. |

Here's a photo of the big 3, from Chris Russell's 106.7 blog.

Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
"disappointed"....i dont like that words.
Sounds like something old lovable Coach Joe would say, or something Zorn would say: "Well Golly Gee Willagers, i'm so dissappointed at how our workouts turned out". Sorry that was my best Zorn impression. I want to hear Shanahan say that anyone who doesn't workout will be cut. |

When you look at the video and how he says it, you understand what he means. There is a fine line between a "i'm disappointed, have a great day" and "i'm disappointed, here's your pink slip" . I think the great coaches walk that very close, JG did it well, JZ not so much. |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
CP isnt the sharpest knife if the drawer but even he's not so dumb as to not show up and participate fully with the new coach. Shanny wont be treating CP with kid gloves like Gibbs and he has a good enough record of success that he wont stand for being put down like Zorn did. I think this is going to be a rude awakening for CP.
|
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
CP knows what Shanahan is all about, he's not going to play games with him especially on day 1 of voluntary workouts. I really believe all the shenanigans we've seen from him are over. There's a new sheriff in town in Shanahan, a guy that he respects and will play hard for. He knows he can't get away with the crap he's pulled in the past.

Not to mention when Gibbs had Portis he was in his prime now Portis is older and struggling. He basically has a lot more to prove this year then in the past. |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
I think part of the rationale behind seeking out a veteran compliment to Portis is to give him that extra kick in the ass too.

If I were a Redskins coach I would play the "you were 4-12" card early and often as a motivator. |

Therein lies the problem, that CP even needs a kick in the ass says he's not the kind of guy you want on your team. I guess I dont understand why a team would bring in an aging player to compliment another aging player. IMO, the real kick in the ass would come from a rookie coming in and running rings around CP. I think CP will have a few good games but in the end he will fizzle out by about week 4. Bottom line is the Skins held on to him too long. |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
About a few days ago, i put all my hate of portis aside....i started looking at things from a team standpoint. And what i can't understand is why they are even committing to him. I could understand 100% totally if they made him a backup. But here's the thing:
His behavior and other problems have totally outweighed any potential good he could do here, especially over the last 2 seasons. I think he has worn out his welcome with most of the players, except for his close friends like Moss. He has already had his prime. Taking nothing away from his achievements, he hit the wall physically during the mid part of 2008, and he has been fading fast ever since. You can't count on him to make a full season injury free. He isn't the guy that's going to go out there and get you 100 yds a game anymore. I think the smartest move the team could make would be to get a young RB, not a retread like some of these old guys we are bringing in. We have one old worn out back. Getting another 30 year old back is ridiculous. We need someone who can step in this year when they will have to, and lead this team at the RB position. |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Who says they won't also take a RB in the draft?

Because aging players are the only ones available until April 22. |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
Question....does this mean that Portis will not go to Miami this year and be participating with the entire team in the off season program?
Does'nt he normally stay in the Miami area in the off-season and do his own off season work out program at the U? |
Re: Portis cleared to participate in offseason workouts, Rogers will be there as well
No doubt, basically said leaders will be there.
Obviously he considers Portis a leader, they both know each other well and know what to expect. Everybody's going to be on board initially to make that first impression, that includes Carlos and Landry as well. They've all undoubtedly gotten the message. |

I would play the "WE are not a 4-12 team" early and often. Don't want to alienate the players that are clearly not happy with last season. |

Fair enough. Either way, it should be used as a motivator. |

I think, or lets say I hope, that a lot of these guys will be using it as motivation on their own. If not they are not the type of guys I would want to keep. Yes, I do agree that it should be kept fresh in their minds as well as being the bottom dwellers of the NFC East for too long. |

The team goal is to improve the talent, coaching and player effectiveness. Shorting ourselves because CP didn't thrive in our former system doesn't accomplish any of that |

This is off-subject a bit but I think the best comment came at the end of the interview.
JC was out on the preactice field watching the coaches. You can question his FB ability all day, I do, but his character is All-Pro. |

I understand that, all they have to do is wait and draft a young one. Just because free agency is going on doesnt mean the Skins have to participate. |

The Skins have already held on to CP 2 years too long. I hope the new FO will follow that sage advice. |
