The Inside Linebacker Position
The next area that I feel needs to be addressed is the Inside Linebacker Position. We tried to address it with Foote, however he signed with the Steelers. Who should fill that roll? Rocky is said to be able to play inside as well as outside linebacker. H.B. Blades is an option. However would it be a smart idea to have 2 unsized ILB's? Maybe draft a guy like Brandon Spikes? Discuss your solution player and why?

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
Blades has the potential to be a good starter. Probably better than any draft pick, although we should pick a LB somewhere in the draft after O-Line and possibly RB are addressed.
|
Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
I like the idea of Rocky if we keep Carter, however if he goes I would like to see a rookie like Sean Lee of Penn State, who is Football smart and be a solid starter for years.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
Donald Butler is a lot like Karlos Dansby. He played MLB for the huskies and has the size of Bart Scott. He's really good in pass coverage also. One football magazine which I bought has him being the best ILB taken (yes even above mcclain and spikes; the magazine said that "although he won't be the first of the ILB's taken, he's still the best ILB in our eyes). Right now he's project to get picked anywhere from mid second round to the 4th round.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
Do we have any players with 3-4 experience on our roster? One of the reasons why I was pulling for the likes of Dansby or Foote, was because they have extensive 3-4 experience. I don't know how important this is or not, but it would have been nice to have a player with 3-4 experience.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
I guess Lorenzo Alexander fits the bill.

Solution for this year or for long term? First off i don't think that Rocky is neccesarily undersized for a 3-4 ILB. They are many 3-4 ILB around his same size: Copper/Siler, Brooking/James, DQ Jackson(go terps!)+Barton+Maiava, Scott/Harris I think our ILBs are set for this season. London will be the strong side ILB(buck) and Rocky the weak side ILB(mack). Blades, imo, because of experience playing SAM and his short stocky frame is a natural fit as a 3-4 'buck' and would be capable back-up to London. Henson, Robert comes from TCU where i believed they played a 3-4 and he has good size and speed and showed last pre-season that he hits with good pop i think he could step in at either spot but especially the 'mack' position. Fletcher and Haynesworth have played in a 3-4 |

Thank you for the correction. I knew it wasn't a typical 4-3 alignment.
^ No they haven't Tennessee ran a 4-3 and so did St. Louis and buffalo for fletcher's case.
Fletcher has actually said that he's played in a 3-4 before. |

I thought we cut Henson after his idiotic comments about us (fans).

Henson is still with us, Cody Glenn is the one that got let go and is now with the Colts

One possibility is Jamar Chaney from Mississippi State. He is a very good athlete who runs in the low 4.5 range with adequate size and good range.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
Rocky will move inside when we sign Joey Porter later this week.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
5.02? I'm going to try out for ILB!

Fletcher, who'll likely line up inside next to McIntosh (a restricted free agent), isn't worried about the defense making a big adjustment. "I've played in a 4-3 and a 3-4," he said. "And some of the things we did last year (under retired coordinator Greg Blache) are related to the 3-4 concept." http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/r...ngton_Redskins |

St. Louis ran a 4-3 the whole time fletch was there and buffalo as well ran a 4-3 the whole time he was there, what he means by playing in the 3-4 before is during games they would occasionally run it a few times, which really isn't that big of a deal. It's not like he was always in a 3-4 defense for a whole season, is what I'm saying. |

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
I personally would give Blades a shot. Rocky is more of an OLB guy. Blades is a clone of London fletcher, so can't use the argument of undersized LB. He has the instincts to play, and has basically been watching London and learning the last few years. Now, if someone is there late, 4th or 5th, then maybe. I really think we have quality players on our bench that could play. If Blades plays middle, Rocky plays OLB. I have always said give Chris wilson a shot. I think he would be a very good OLB in a 3/4. From what i here they are predicting Spikes will go in the 4th or 5th now because of his very slow 40 time, which is ridiculous. remember when they said fitzgerald wouldn't be an NFL receiver because he was too slow?? how did that work out! Spikes is one of those "football players" instinctive, aggressive, just freaking mean on the field. I would take him in the 3rd if he is there.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
no way would i line up both fletcher and blades in the middle at the same time. you can have one undersized guy in there, but not two. i just dont see it going well.
|
Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
Man this undersized LB thing pisses me off so much it's like I'm a little guy having to defend myself. Look, Fletcher and Blades are short. They are heavier than most LBs in the league. Fletcher close to 250 and Blades even heavier. Obviously height is important to shed blocks and whatnot but clearly Fletcher learned how to be extremely effective or else he wouldn't be the tackling machine he is. The only question about pairing these two inside is how good can Blades really be...if he can be as good as Fletcher we'll be very good.

Actually, I think their low center of gravity would be more beneficial to shed blocks. I think that their lack of height would hinder them in coverage. |

I agree that Blades will have an home at SILB or 'buck' in a 3-4. But, i don't think he's ready to supplant Fletcher and i don't think he's athletic enough to play WILB. But, if you're talking about playing Blades as the SILB and Fletch as the WILB then that would make sense but i think the pairing of Fletch and Rocky would much better then the pairing of Blades and Fletch. And i 100% disagree about Rocky. Rocky role as a 4-3 WILL is almost exactly the same as a 3-4 WILB. Both are 'protected' and rarely have to take on blocks from OG or FBs. Rocky would essentially be playing his same position. But, if you move Rocky to a 3-4 OLB then you're gonna have issues and they've already said that Rocky would play inside in the 3-4. Agree 100% about Chris Wilson i think he would be a better fit for the LOLB position then Andre Carter. Yes sir the lack of height is a much bigger deal for coverage. |
Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
Like I said. Lorenzo Alexander fits the bill but, there's several 3-4 LBs in the draft. We can't afford to miss on one.

Re: The Inside Linebacker Position
I think OLB is a spot where we should look to add someone in the draft
but specifically LOLB its the one position in the tranisition to 3-4 where i don't think we have a incoming proven player/starter who is going to make an easy transition -we have Carter who'll be moving from DE and the question remains how well he can make the transition (but i think he'll do better then people think, especially since it seems like Haslett is going to play to his strengths i.e. more pass rushing then coverage) -behind Carter is Wilson who might actually be a better all around 3-4 OLB after spending last year as Orkapo's back-up at SAM (which is essentially the same position as 3-4 LOLB except with more coverage responsibilities) but he's still unproven |
