Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Sounds like a 3-4 base isn't necessarily set in stone

Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Nice sidestepping of the question without really saying anything new about Haynesworth....love that he is, at face value at least, trying to adapt the scheme to the personnel though

What? Adapt your defense to better fit the personnel you have? Unheard of in D.C.! What will they think of next? Doing the same thing on offense? Nah. Too radical. |
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Seems like we are going to do hybrid style, just like Arizona's? If we actually are going to use 3-4, I really hope the transition would go smoothly, just like Green Bay did last year..
Edit: at the ending, Shanahan sounded like if Redskins coaches will create their own version of 3-4 style.. |
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Believe me its 3-4, shanahan just doesn't want coaches around the league to start planing for it. It's been known for a while, he's just trying to throw you off or think of something else to get you to think "Ohh maybe its going to be a 4-3 instead"
|
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
i agree that shanahan has no reason to admit we're switching to a 3-4 right now. however, i also agree that he'd be a complete moron to switch to a base 3-4 with the current personnel we have in place. As of right now, the only prototypical 3-4 player we've added to our defense is a NT who can't even pass a physical. we had a shortage of good linebackers when running the 4-3 - there's no way we can switch to the 3-4 without acquiring alot more talent. free agency is dwindling down. we only have 5 draft picks and, by all appearances, we won't be drafting anyone before the 4th round who doesnt play offense. there's plenty of time before our 53-man roster is finalized, but unless/until we do a significant overhaul of our defensive front 7, i think the chances are we'll be keeping a base 4-3 for another year.

Adapt the defense to fit the personnel??
Holy crap!!! I just saw a flying pig. |

Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
I think he wants teams to believe that we still might nab Suh or G. mccoy, thus giving us some leverage for trades. Or maybe takings one of those guys is a real possibility?
|
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
MS he's looking to trade out of #4 & pick up more picks. IMO. Don't show your hand.
|
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
^^ I would love to trade out of the 4 and get more picks. The offensive line talent is so deep in this draft we could get our OL of the future in this draft alone.
|
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
This is what you get when you have a true professional coach. A guy who'll take what he has in personnel and make a scheme to maximize it.
|
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Adapt the defense to fit the personnel??
Holy crap!!! I just saw a flying pig.
LOL. Seriously. I don't think "elaborate" is the right word. To paraphrase: Are we a 4-3? Maybe when camp comes around we'll realize we're more of a 4 man front kind of team. Or maybe we're a 3-4. Will we be more like Pitt, Dal, NE, or SD? Who really knows? You can't really make those decisions until you see how your personnel plays. Shanahan talked for a while and basically said nothing. |

Phat Al obviously doesn't want to be a full time nose so they need Kemo to fill that role. Although I think a front 4 of Carter (Jarmon, Lorenzo), Godzilla, Kemo and Philip Daniels is disgusting. I love how big our defensive line has become. |
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
Just a quick question. Why does the media conviently seem to forget that in the Haynesworth "scandal" Shanahan said he respected Haynesworth for coming to him? All I keep hearing is the part where he says he strongly disagrees with the decision which gets turned into a huge riff.

i know! unfortunately, the whole story is not as interesting as just some of it's parts. whatever bleeds leads. |

Because Portis hasn't opened his yap recently and the offeason has reaked of professionalism. The local media (Polin, Czaban, Lavar, BMitch etc.) don't know what to do when things are run the way they should be. |

Hell I keep hearing about how he doesn't want to play NT in the 3-4. Adam Schein said it again yesterday  Still haven't heard AH come out and say those words yet. In fact he's already said he will do what they want and not be a distraction... so where does this BS keep coming from? |

I think it's funny also. If Shanahan truly didn't agree or tell AH do whatever works best we might be looking at the Skins shopping AH but instead all is quiet. The media played this issue out simply saying Shanahan and AH respect each other, and AH does not plan to participate and Shanahan disagree's with the decision. Nobody is providing what the out come was. It's volunter work outs. No team or coach can demand any player to be there. Shanahan can be dissapointed all he wants but if AH shows up fit as a fiddle I don't see any reason for him to be mad. The media simply skips over the volunter part and they emphasize the AH is not present part and Shanahan strongly disagrees with it. |

Good analogy....plus the idea of moving players currently on the roster to positions they're not acquianted with is an experiment that's going to take time to materialize if at all. Players like Lorenzo Alexander, Andre Carter and Jeremy Jarmon are good players at the positions they play, but talk of moving them to the LB position requires more than just a notion. I agree with those who say personnel is the key to whether we switch to a 3-4 as the base defense. It's good to see Shanahan is not giving up any definitive answers to the question, no need to give the opposition a head start in preperation. |

Someone in the organization, be it players or coaches have had to daily answer the same questions about Haynesworth. Maybe he has become such an easy target because of his contract. Perhaps they envy him because it's him and not them. |

Jason Reid is one of the few people I've seen show the whole quote. Guys like JLC however (go figure) have only talked about the "very disappointed part" though he's not the only one to do that, just the one I can easily remember off the top of my head. |
Re: Mike Shanahan elaborates on what Redskins' defense will be
I was wanting us to switch to a 3-4 simply because I was sick and tired of the opposite extreme we had last year. That "bend but don't break" defense we had was no different than playing the prevent defense but starting it out in the first quarter.I hate the prevent period and think it has no place in football. For sure our personal is better suited for the 4-3. I just want a more aggressive 4-3. As long as our corners are with in 10 yards of the receivers (preferably less) I think most people will be happy. On a side note.... Carlos Rogers needs to stop whining and learn how to catch.

From what I've read Haslett and Slowik both believe getting pressure on the QB is paramount to getting turnovers. I think we'll see a more aggressive defense with Blache gone. I'm looking forward to it! |
