So let's see, the Redskins All-Time Offseason Fan Favorite Team:
Colt Brennan Marcus Mason Marko Mitchell Anthony Mix (Well he was a fan favorite at one point) Also I remember this kid named Anthony Dixon (I think), who was released last year and people acted like we had released Reggie White. |
Re: Redskins Release 5
Bye Marko, thanks for the preseason memories.

Re: Redskins Release 5
Redskins release Mitchell, Alridge, Robinson, Hill, A. Montgomery
Updated at 11:49 a.m. Last week the Redskins' roster grew, but this week it's shrinking -- and at least one name will surprise you. The team released five players this morning, including receiver Marko Mitchell, who impressed during preseason last year but appears to be the odd man out following the team's recent veteran free agent signings. Also released today: running backs Anthony Alridge and P.J. Hill, receiver James Robinson and defensive linemen Anthony Montgomery. But Mitchell's name will be the one that surprises most. A seventh-round draft pick out of Nevada in 2009, Mitchell appeared in 10 games last season and had only 32 yards on four catches. But Mitchell raised the hopes of many with a strong preseason last year, one in which he posted 113 yards on 11 receptions and had touchdown grabs in each of the final three games. Last week, we asked you in a poll which of eight receivers do you most wanted to see on next year's roster. More than 7,500 responded and Mitchell was easily the top vote-getter, garnering nearly 75 percent of the vote. Mitchell wasn't a special teams contributer, which could mean Mike Shanahan didn't see him doing enough things justify the roster spot, especially considering newly-drafted Terrence Austin can return punts and kickoffs. It also could mean the team might try to keep either Joey Galloway or Bobby Wade, both of whom signed with the team last week. By releasing Mitchell and Robinson, the Redskins will likely enter Friday's minicamp with nine wide receivers. As for the other positions, Alridge has struggled to find a role in Washington. Many thought because of his prior relationship with Shanahan in Denver, he could serve as a speed back for this team. But if the Redskins intend to start the season with Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker -- plus Ryan Torain, one of Shanahan's last draft picks in Denver -- there's not a lot of room for others. Montgomery was the Redskins' fifth-round pick in the 2006 draft. He was a restricted free agent who signed a tender last month. But the Redskins brought in so many veteran defensive linemen since then that coaches likely didn't see a spot remaining for Montgomery. At 6-foot-6, 330 pounds, Montgomery might've had the body to play nose tackle, if not the skill-set. He was a regular starter on the line for the Redskins in 2007, but last year didn't crack the starting rotation once. He has appeared in 42 games for the Redskins in four seasons, playing a role in 78 tackles and registering three sacks. The Redskins have added six veteran defensive linemen during the offseason: Darrion Scott, Adam Carriker, Howard Green, Anthony Bryant, Maake Kemoeatu and Greg Peterson. |
Re: Redskins Release 5
If Austin pans out he's likely to be the #5 WR and it really helps if your #5 can contribute on teams. Especially if it's looking like you might be keeping 3 RBs and none of them will be on teams.

Re: Redskins Release 5
I'll just repost what I wrote in another thread
Not surprised at all about Mitchell being released. I fully expected it, though not this soon. No surprise on PJ Hill. Didn't even know we had James Robinson, don't even know who he is. Montgomery is mildy surprising, but once the Rams didn't take him in the Carriker deal it was pretty apparent he was gone. Pretty surprised about Alridge though. |

Re: Redskins Release 5
There's not one surprise here. These should have been expected moves, by most. Well excluding the five...
|
Re: Redskins Release 5
I'm kinda shocked especially w/ Marko because he never had a chance; but he was gone the moment we signed Wade and Galloway, but he should get picked up soon. Montgomery was not surprising, Vinny and Blache liked him (starter in '07), but his lack of motivation is what got him cut, as well as Carriker coming here. Maybe opens up a spot/ and $ to sign Sharper.

Re: Redskins Release 5
I thought Montgomery was gonna wake up one year and show some desire... dissapointing.

Re: Redskins Release 5
Marko wont be unemployed for long.

Ah, thanks for the correction. I knew I didn't have his name correct. |
Re: Redskins Release 5
Not totally surprised with Mitchell getting released, but after the minicamp? Not sure why folks got all excited about the kid? He had a decent preseason, but was up against 2nd-3rd string defenses most of the time. Plus he came from Nevada, a pistol offense heavy on the run. The move also tells me we got the vet WRs to compete to play and not just to light a fire under the newbies' butts. Don't be surprised if Shanny releases another newbie later on when the roster has to hit 53. I hope Mitchell actually pursued a real degree at Nevada and not the typical basketweaving ones like Phys Ed or a general Communications degree. It is a 50/50 chance somebody is going to pick him up. Getting released at minicamp isn't very good.

Re: Redskins Release 5
My take is that Shanny got the vets to shore up the WR corp til he can draft some next year and the next. Don't be surprised to see either Thomas or Kelly get dumped in August. I doubt it is going to happen, but shoot if Marko got released, those guys can be on the block as well.
|
Re: Redskins Release 5
Marko will get pick up by a team then maybe released then ends up on a pactice sq.
|
Re: Redskins Release 5
marko mitchell was never even close to being in the same league as kelly and thomas, so releasing mitchell has nothing to do with the status of either of the 2008 WRs. however, smoots been telling us all offseason that kelly was on the block, so if he doesnt make the team, it wouldnt be a complete surprise. that said, i doubt either Galloway or Wade is a threat to Kelly, Thomas, or Moss. If any of those three dont make the team, it'll be because we traded for someone better... or signed TO... GULP.
|
Re: Redskins Release 5
Marko surprises me, he has some potential.
However, new bosses, new goal (win now) and the signing of Galloway leaves no room for him. |

That is the best he can hope for. He has decent size, etc, but if we didn't draft him, he would have been undrafted, so nobody deemed him worthy of picking up in the first place. Getting rleased during minicamp isn't a good thing at all for a player's resume. Look for Shanny to draft a WR with one of our top 3 picks next year. |

Never mentioned Moss, only the newbies as maybe being a victim of another surprise cut. And if we retained Wade and Galloway for a year or two, Shanny can draft some upper round Wrs that can get the job done. |

This is a ridiculous reason. Ever heard of demaryius thomas? He's a WR from Georgia Tech thats EXTREMELY run heavy yet he was a 1st round pick. So his college scheme really has nothing to do with it now. Apparently, Marko just didnt show enough polish during the minicamp as far as running routes and picking up the playbook. With Shanahan wanting to "win now", you cant go into the season with 4 outta 5 receivers "developing." There has to be SOME establishment out there. |
Re: Redskins Release 5
I mean why do you need the vets to help out with instilling leadership in the newbies, etc? Isn't that why we hired McCardell for? I think the Vets are there for insurance, not to help coach up the greenies. I could be wrong, but Shanny could have just brought in TO to help out with the newbies and contribute. That is why I say look out for another surpise cut in August. My guess is one of the vets will stay.

Re: Redskins Release 5
Unless one of our WRs is stuggling with a serious injury, i dont see how Wade or Galloway would stay at the expense of Moss, Kelly, or Thomas. If that happened, i'd truly be shocked but give you all the credit in the world for calling it.

Re: Redskins Release 5
Suprised by this but i'll go with the coaches know best i'm sure MS didn't do this without consulting KMc first.

That was just an add on. Thing was he was drafted real low also, so obviously folks didn't think he was hot. And yes a system(school you go to also) can have an influence on if one is drafted or not. IF you are above average in talent, but are in a system that you really can't showcase your ability, that does hinder your NFL draft status. The only Wrs that can buck this trend are the ones with exceptional talent, cream of the crop. You gave me Demaryius Thomas as an example of WR from a run heavy system at Ga Tech, but that guy was from a big school and is definitely very gifted. My uncle coached Chris Carter at Ohio State in a balanced attack, but that guy was phenomenal, and of course was a first rounder. |

I have not been saying that about Kelly. I said that he was in the discussions for Marshall. |

My thing is more based a lot on the fact that it is a new regime. Obviously Shanny didn't think Marko had it, while most of us were excited by the guy. Obviously I guess we didn't see what Shanny and co saw something that maybe they migh see in Thomas or Kelly come August. I am not saying it is going to happen Big Hair, just saying don't be surprised if it does. I can easily see one of the vets staying on the 53 man roster also. |

Re: Redskins Release 5
Wow, I am pretty disappointed in Marko Mitchell being released. I still think he has a shot in the NFL. Oh well, another fan favorite gone. Last one on the roster is Colt. I have a bad feeling about him right now. He better have a good mini camp or he will be gone too.

Re: Redskins Release 5
Marko Mitchell got the ax? I thought he had potential. I guess he wasn't that potentially.
|
Re: Redskins Release 5
Anybody who doesn't understand the Mitchell and Montgomery releases doesn't yet understand Mike Shanahan.
I like Marko Mitchell, but he is a freakin beanpole with stork legs! Montgomery is a lazy player with a heart of glass. You have to put a massive amount of time in the weight room if you are going to play for Shanahan and I bet both of these players fell on the far low end range when they were monitored during their workouts. |
Re: Redskins Release 5
Sorry to hear that both Marko & MOnty are gone. I always root for the draft picks & hope they can stay w/the skins. Monty had a couple decent years w/us & Marko had the preseason of 09.
I really hope Austin can make the team & return punts & kicks. I don't really want to see Galloway or Wade make the team, as I'd rather see some youth there that can play spec. teams. |

That list was an "offseason" fan favorite team. Dudes who never played meaningful football. Ade Jimoh actually played a ton on teams. Also nobody can ever forget that guy because whenever he got the chance to play CB he looked like he was wearing a clown costume. Good teams player though. |

NICE! How easily everyone forgets THE ADE! Man among boys. |
Re: Redskins Release 5
The writing was on the wall for Monty once Carriker and the guy from Carolina were signed. Monty is a classic underachiever. If Monty had Goldston's work ethic we'd have a pro bowler. Marko had a great pre season in 09 but so what? It's pre season. Where was he during the regular season? If he was any good then he would've cracked the line up...and it's not like he had the posse in front of him.
