We sure love d-lineman

Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
^ I know. I know they said it but I have to keep reminding myself that the coach's seem content with our O-linemen we have now. They must be making sure there is not a issue with changing scheme's on defense.

I agree on both parts. I would love to see us bringing as many OL as we have DL. I do think bringing DL in is a way to say to AH that we will have a plan if he doesn't show up in shape. I hope that Capers long term is an excellent draft pick, maybe even getting playing time at the RT spot this year. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
We also love ex-1st rounders. I think Smoot had the stat before of how many of our players were drafted in the first round, and you can add V. Holliday to the list.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
For those keeping score we currently have 15 OL on the roster, 12 DL.
The DL number doesn't count guys like Carter, Jarmon, or Rak who are listed as LB. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
If all goes well and everyone comes in healthy I sit back and think about the 2010 Redsksin D-line and wonder how nasty it can be.... Daniels, Kemoeatu, Haynesworth. All I keep seeing is the pockets for the QB's collapsing constantly. I know AH is supposed to fill in at NT but I look at the idea of Daniels, Kemoeatu, Hanesworth and think putting Orakpo on one side rushing and just about anyone of the other and OL will be saying just stay in the shot gun and get rid of the ball fast.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I think your scenario is right, and we will have a flex front, where we may show 3 DL and then have Orakpo or the other side OLB walk up pre snap to change the look. I am excited about the DL potential
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
It's definitely going to look different than the defense we've seen the last couple of years. Not as predictable.

We really have to go back a-ways to a time when we had a D/L this flexible. Will be interesting to see out of all the new additions, just which one's make the final roster. Depending on how much the 3-4 is going to be deployed during the course of the season, there may be more of a need to keep D/L - L/B types, the breakdown will certainly be worth watching. For far too long we have been less than enthused about the D/L this time of year. |

Too many question marks all over the D-line. I do like the low risk high reward type signings but I wonder if any of these guys can actually play. Daniels can't run around my mother so he's a complete waste of time and a roster spot. Kemoeatu didn't play last year and is coming off a serious injury. Haynesworth may or may not be in shape. Carriker also is coming off an injury and even when he was played he really showed nothing. Jarmon is also coming off an injury. Not sure how Carter fits in with the new defense. Holiday is got to be on the other side of 35 and has bounced around the last hfew years. I'd say the only guy that we can 100% count on is Orakpo. |

agreed. Why change the D.......Our offensive line was offensive. Change that. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
Anytime you change a D there are going to be question marks. That shouldn't scare you away from making a change though.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
meh. not particularly excited about the guy. IMO we've got ALOT of very mediocre players on our Dline. our best Dlineman is nowhere to be found and our 2nd best (carriker) is widely considered a bust but i'm hoping he can resurrect his career here. i'm not very confident in our front 7 at all. glad we atleast have competition though.

Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I don't know BHA, I think from a line perspective, we have a couple steller guys for once the season starts, AH, Kemo, AC, Orakpo, and then some substitution guys, Carriker, Jarmon, AC, and then the others, which should give us the ability to rotate and utilize a lot more looks and pressures. But until the season it's all conjecture.
edit BHA, I would love to know what if any move the Skins could make at this point that would elicit an optimistic response from you. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
donvan mcnabb, trent williams, and phillip buchannon off the top of my head. then there are a ton of non-moves that i loved. i just dont see how picking up half a dozen mediocre dlinemen is something to get excited about.

Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
All the question marks have some upside.

Redskins signed DE Vonnie Holliday, formerly of the Broncos. Holliday is 34, but was one of the most productive per-snap 3-4 ends in the game last season, so he's certainly worth a look as a rotational body. He also has experience in the 3-4 as a five-technique with the Dolphins and Broncos. The more interesting aspect of this addition is that it could be a sign the 'Skins are still trying to trade Albert Haynesworth. SI's Ross Tucker is hearing that talks between the Vikings and Redskins are still alive.
If this is true, he sounds solid as a backup/rotating player. His sack numbers look good for not being a full-time player over his career. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
Not sure what signing a rotational guy has to do with trading AH, but hey they've gotta keep the story cookin' somehow.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
ross tucker hasnt been pushing the haynesworth trading story as far as i can tell. this would be new for him. however, even JLC said the viking/skins trade rumors had died down, so i dont know where this came from.

Yeah this is the way i see it too. A lot of old guys, injuries, and question marks. And it’s not like our LB corps is exactly proven in a 3/4 scheme or flush with experience for the change. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
Wow yet another FA signed over the age of 30.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
yeah not much of a move here. Who knows how this will all work out come training camp. In a 3-4 there is not much room for 15 dlinemen.
So who will make the final roster. Holliday may or may not. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday

I think this is signing is more of a message if anything else to AH. Don't want to be part of the team then step aside!!!! Holliday hopefully plays his ass off in August and makes the team. I am sure the FO is still mulling over a potential AH trade. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday

I consider this more of Allen saying" F%^& you AH!" than anything else. At this point I would keep AH arounds since nobody wants to touch that "toxic" contract of his and his now displayed shitty attitude. Let him fulfill his contract out(unless you can indeed get a nice trade deal for him ) and let him sit. Keep the guy in limbo in his own self imposed purgatory. He is only hurting his career in the long run. Holliday is a 3-4 man anyway, so he should be a keeper for depth at least and maybe a part time starter. |

Billie Holliday the famous female Jazz singer. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I like the idea of trying out a lot of players at all positions. If they try out enough players, they may find one or two who can help the team to get better. I hope they run tryout players through Redskins Park as if they're on a conveyor belt because it could only help. We were 4-12 last season, folks. Four and Twelve! There is a lot of room for improvement and not much risk of getting worse.

Holliday is a decent player so I don't know why all the fuss about the signing. I know he is older, but his work history is decent for a non starter, and he is experienced with the 3-4, so it was a good signing. It also makes somewhat of a statement with AH that there is going to be real competition for the starting positions and he better get his ass in gear. I would love to see Holliday do very well in August and earn a roster spot over AH. Allen and Shanny are geniuses. THe only way to exorcise the demon of complacency with these guys is some true blue real ass competition. Our roster is filled with a bunch of bums to be honest and I think the FO knows that. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I think it's better to say it was filled with a bunch of bums. We dropped 10 of 'em off the bat, and now it's probably 50/50, but I'm hoping that the 50 that are bums get their butts in gear now.
Depth
Not to mention competition - something we have been lacking. The way to find the diamonds in the rough, or those whose play may have been lacking in the past, is to try to stir up their competitive nature, and see if any shine through. If not, you have lost very little, but the chance of gaining one, two, or even three gems is worth the risk. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I honestly don't know what sort of age decline Holliday has been in the last few seasons, but I think he's had one of the most overlooked, quiet, solid careers in recent memory. His name doesn't come up much when you talk about great defensive linemen in the NFL, but he's been one of the best DL of the decade.
I liken him to Darren Sharper, you know, before he got all that media attention last year. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
And to get a job, all he has to do is beat out Greg Peterson for the final DL roster spot. Somehow, I don't think he'll be deined.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
So why don't the skins just consider trading Haynesworth and Andre Carter to the saints for Jammal Brown?
