CBS Says Worst coaching job: Joe Gibbs
Yes, CBSSportsline says Gibbs has done the worst coaching job thus far. They don't say why though. Hmm, I wonder what it could be?
Well, it can't be for hiring Greg Williams, since Williams is picked as runner--up for best assistant defensive coach. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/7875207 |
It seems like they're saying he hasn't fulfilled expectations. But you look around and there are a few other teams that haven't exactly fulfilled expectations either.

must be written by our dearly departed Zmills... :Smoker: |
And good for Dick Lebeau for the job he's doing in Pitt, but I think Williams has been the best defensive assistant

Nope! Wasn't Zmills. It was Pete Prisco. |
Same difference!

Particularly considering our injuries and the talent the Steelers put out. Most of all though, because the Steelers have a consistent O moving the ball and keeping the D fresh! :cussing: |
That's a joke. If we would have had a few calls go the other way. We could be 5&3. Gibbs is doing ok. I think we will start stringing some wins together here down the stretch. His only real fault so far that I can see is some bad clock management and a little to much loyalty to his QB,ok way to much loyalty. But that's it. It's not like Gibbs is taking over a Super Bowl team we've sucked for a long time. I mean come on the guy is a Great coach. But he isn't Jesus.
|
Could it be that all these 'experts' are mad at Gibbs because they (just like us) thought he was gonna come in and turn things around instantly?
|
Also, seems to me that the biggest disappointment (KC) was 13-3 last year and is 3-5 this year, but I don't see Vermeil's name anywhere.
|
Good point. And lets not forget Vermeil's Rams sucked his first year back. But the next year he won the hole thing. Gibbs needs to get the house in order before he can start showing it off.
|
vermeil is up there i'd say but i still think that gibbs is the top disappointment. remember that even if we did hit the 5-3 record (thru sheer luck), it's only b/c of gregg that we're where we are at 3 wins. so in the sense that gibbs is the mastermind behind the offense that's capped out at 18 pts/game i'd say he's the biggest one.
i'm just being realistic... that being said i know that soon enough he will turn it around and we'll be on top again. all new coaches with a new team need a year or 2. if it weren't for the fact that everyone hates DC we wouldn't even be hearing this junk. |
Where did that come from? If you are talking about not fulfilling expectation then look no further than the Cowboys and the Tuna.
|
I understand they've been besieged by injuries but what about John Fox and the 1-7 Panthers. Although, honestly I thought they were overrated last year
|
i think that kc,the cowboys, the dolphins, and the panthers have been huge dissapointments this year.this is gibbs"first"year in the millennium nfl, with him,the skins have a lot better chance of winning than they have in the 12 years he's been gone.
cbs sucks anyways, the only people they have that know shit are greg gumbel and phil simms anyways, shannen sharpe, marino, and boomer can't pull their heads out of their asses long enough to see anything, imo. |
Very few teams have the talent we have and still don't get it done. KC has at least shown flashes of brilliance and Vermeil is scoring points. Gibbs has nothing to do with our defense, and that's our forte. That's why he's the biggest disappointment. I'd like to argue Prisco, but I can't.
The Panthers are definitely a runner up. |
gibbs hand picked greg williams to run the d, so i would say gibbs has something to do with the d
|
worst coach , in my opinion , dennis erickson out in san fransisco
|
Gibbs is the head coach isn't he? He has a hand in every aspect of the game... it is his attention to detail that puts him appart from the likes of Steve Spurrier and isn't our team playing all together better as as a team ?
Sure there have been errant challenges but there were in other years, sure there is the unbelivable loyalty for Brunell but again rember the turmoil Spurrier prevoked by flip flopping from Weurfel to Mathews to Ramsey to Mathews etc etc. As a HC he prosides over the No.1 Defence admittedly thanks to Williams, and a top 3 running back in the NFC.... there are worse coaches out there I would really like to know thier reasoning .. |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gibbs has ALWAYS left his defense alone. He did it with Pettibone, and he's doing it with Williams. He made a GREAT choice in Williams, no one doubts that.
At the point, Gibbs is the biggest disappointment. As far as Erikson, look at the talent difference between these two clubs, and they shouldn't even be comparable. |
I defintley see where Daseals coming from. Although hes defintley no where near the worst coach, because people had unrealistic expecations ( including myself ), he could be considered a dissapointement.
|
Could it be that all these 'experts' are mad at Gibbs because they (just like us) thought he was gonna come in and turn things around instantly?
Probably. And if I remember correctly, I don't believe Gibbs burned the NFL in the first year of his first tenure in DC. When he implements a system it does take time to develop, but when he's done, the results carry on a few years and you have a solid team that is in the playoffs or at least competitive for a long time to come. Hey, if we hit .500 or come close this year, I'll be happy. |
Let them take their shots while they can.
|
How about the recently retired Dave Wannstedt? I understand the loss of Tokey McBonghit was severe, but there was no attempt to reshape the offense to the personnel - ultimately leading to his departure.
|
daseal, i understand that gibbs is dissapointing right know but don't you think thats just because expectations were so high? the skins were not good last year , it's going to take a while for them to get on track. the reason i say erickson is for the simple fact that they realy stink , i beleive the skins would win if they played ( better talent , yes but also a better coach )
|
I have to say that whoever said Gibbs is the biggest dissappointment in the coaching department hasn't paid attention to the entire NFL. Gibbs' coaching, IMO, has been solid...it takes time to build a solid team that will CONSISTANTLY play at the level of Super Bowl contenders instead of being flash in the pans such as the Panthers. THAT team has to be the biggest dissappointment after going to the Super Bowl last year. But, like Matty said, let them take their shots while they can because they'll be eating their words soon enough.
|
Wolfeskins - They were bad for one major reason last year. Their defense. The line didn't play well but our offense put points up nearly every week. Gibbs runs the offense. Therefore he's been the biggest disappointment this year. He has more talent than any other losing team in the league.
They're not saying he's the worst forever. Just right now. |
it's b/t gibbs and fox but fox has had horrible injuries to his squad. doubt it would give them more than a W or 2. as for expectations being high, when are they not in DC? i'd dupe myself to thinking the 'skins would win even with deion sanders as HC, it's just the way i think. high hopes and don't get down when they're down. just like george nelson, mr. gibbs will be on top again... this is not the last we've seen of old joe gibbs!
|
Saying the defense was the main problem last year is sugarcoating things a bit, don't ya think daseal?. ;)
The offense averaged 17.9 per game, not exactly a high powered attack. Better than this year though. |
Matty, how many games did we go into the 4th quarter with a lead only to have our defense let us down and let them drive the length of the field? Let's compare TOP between this year and last year too.
I think trying to defend Gibbs system right now is sugarcoating it, don't you? I'd love to be scoring 17.9 right now =p |
I'm just saying we had quite a few problems on offense too. The offense scored less than 20 points 7 times last year. How many times did we have drives we couldn't sustain because we couldn't run the ball effectively? When you can't hold on to the ball that has an effect on the D.
TOP reflects what you're doing on both sides of the ball, when you have the advantage that usually means you're running the ball and the D isn't giving up long drives. And when you don't have the advantage it usually means you're not running the ball and you're giving up long drives. This year we're 7th overall in time of possession with 31:20, last year we were 23rd with 28:45. |
That was one thing I noticed right away this year is the time of possession increasing; which is a characteristic of a Joe Gibbs team. That will continue to improve now that we're running the ball more effectively. Keeping our defense and the opposing team's offense off of the field just plays into our hands that much more. It allows for our defense to rest and takes away opportunties for the opposing team to score (unless you're the Ravens!) Imagine once our offense starts hitting on all cylinders! Our defense is going to be down right scary.....and I am going to be lovin' it!!!!

Who could have imagined a 1# ranked defense without Arrington, Bowen and Barrow. If this defense doesn't remind you of the rank and file players of Rich Milot, Neal Olkewicz and Monte Coleman then you don't know Joe Gibbs. Believe it or not, but the consistent big plays on the offense will come from the no-name players like Jacobs, Cooley, Thrash and Royal. Jacobs is slowly getting more involved in the offense and special teams with great success so far. Gibb's wants versatile players who are able to wear different hats. Portis is the best example of this.
The most dissappointing Coach this year is still fat ass Bill Parcells. He made the decision to get rid of Quincy Carter, Troy Hambrick, Antonio Bryant and settle for Eddie George. But like I said before the media throws a blank statement out there and we who are Redskins fans began to grab on to their madness. Remember fellas, 12 years away from the game and there are at least 4 teams that have only one win. One of them was in the Superbowl last year. Now you really need a check up from the neck up if you think Gibb's is the most dissappointing coach after that fact. |
WELL PUT SUNRA. to me there is no way that gibbs can even be considered the most dissapointing, he's been away for 12 years, thats a long freakin time. the skins are playing with more hart, more emotion and more like a team than i've seen in a long time. once the passing game kicks in the skins will be one of the top teams in the nfl.

in reference to TOP measuring how good your offense is or whatever... it doesn't reflect properly for heavy throwing teams (like spurrier wanted to be and what the rams are)... teams that run on 60%+ of their plays are going to have higher TOP (unless they got crap RBs) then those that want to throw 60-70% of the time... my vote for horrid coach would be the raiders or the saints... you may hate dallas, but thats parcells and/or jones GM'ing skills, not his coaching skills; they just don't have the talent right now. as for gibbs, he did get a great D staff in place (which got us from #25 to #1), and even though the passing game has been awful, it still looks like we'll have a better record than last year (even with nearly 100% staffing turnover and so much talent turnover)... while its not the 16-0 run i would have prefered, hopefully the core is in place and we'll be looking for missing pieces instead of an entire starting lineup during this offseason, which would really be one of the biggest improvements you could ask for.... (damn, i ended on a preposition, silly me... for which you could ask sounds kind of funky though... us kids have completely ruined the language...) |
