The Workplace

Is it not very obvious that you don't grill someone for answers when you see them eating lunch at their desk? Sometimes I wish I could just say "mother fucker, don't you see I'm eating my lunch?"

I got co-workers that like to talk about their hobbies a lot. Just because I have a bike doesn't mean I want to hear about you working on a customizing your bike almost every fucking day.

Oh and saying "your moma" out of nowhere and out of context is totally retarded...especially if the co-worker you're saying it to is in his mid 40's.

Great thread. I'm trying to get microwaved popcorn abolished. If not in my building or floor, at least in the areas right around me.

The smell, even when not burned, just makes me nauseous. Excessive cologne too. Why do you need to bathe in peach syrup, lady around the corner from me?

When I built my office I knew I wanted a kitchen with a nice stove, microwave, frig, TV, insulated walls, and a door. My rule is when someone is having their lunch break at the office its like they are not in the building. At first the rule was broken a few times but now everyone knows the deal. Every once in a while something comes up but it better be important or I'm pissed. I also just had to remove the oven because some ass wipe city inspector said it was not safe and I would need to install some $4000 vent system after its been there for 8 yrs.

Re: The Workplace

Not necessarily something I hate about lunch, besides being called back into the warehouse to take a delivery (for some reason it always feels like the most popular time for a delivery driver to pull up is during lunch break) but I hate it when I'm back in my section of the warehouse workin and one of the people from the sales staff stops in my section on the way to the back door for a smoke, and then they always gotta stop and talk to you and look at you annoyingly for not wanting to stop what your doing to listen to their annoying ass stories about how one of their kids did the most adorable scary monster impression the other day. Run on sentences aside that's the most annoying thing I deal with. Nowadays I pop some headphones in since the owner of my company banned radios in the warehouse and they see it and just walk on by thankfully.

</rant-complete>
Nothing like boring, stupid, unwanted conversation when you're trying to take a few minutes break from concentrating on writing code, bid responses, etc. Not like the code or bid response is important or an error could cost the company significant $$$ or anything.

And can't people figure out that if someone's eating at their desk they're probably pretty damn busy or broke.....in either case give a guy a few minutes to relax in peace.

I'm with you. I'm so glad I work in a smaller remote office away from our HQ. Just me and a few engineers, who are usually in the field anyway. Even better the ones who run their yap a lot rarely come to the office.

My company is starting a work from home program sometime this summer, I'll be able to work at home 3-4 days a week. Needless to say...

I CAN'T F'ING WAIT

I sit around some hens that just cackle all day long, drives me insane. They sit about 10 feet apart but they're on the phone all day or at each other's desk.

I can definitely see this being the wave of the future for many jobs. I could easily do my job at my house, lower my stress levels and honestly, probably be more effecient. I don't think there is a person on the face of the Earth who wouldn't take advantage of that situation just a little bit, but (at least in IT) there are times where stuff is just "working" and I could possibly spend 6 hours of my 7 hour day doing nothing.

I HATE THE SMELL OF POPCORN.

Thankfully, the biggest offender who used to work in the office right beside me and popped it DAILY, sometimes burning it...RETIRED!

It is one of the rudest office behaviors that exists.

We've even had a "fire drill" because of burnt popcorn. Infuriating.

Dude the whole coming to work sick thing is just so wrong. And the kicker is those same people will use their sick days when they're not even sick! Yeah I get the whole mental health day thing, I do the same thing once in a while, but dammit use some of those sick days when you are actually sick.

Back on the smells, another bad office smell is when someone has onions on a sandwich. Smells like goddamn BO. Or when someone heats up fish in the microwave. Makes me wanna puke.

With all the swine flu stuff going on last year, people were often sent home here at the slightest hint of having a cough or sniffle, etc.

Working from home is great. But I don't know that I could do 3-4 days a week. I work from home maybe 2-3 times per month. Often times it's if I have to go down to NY for a meeting I'll work in the morning from home and then head to NY or vice-versa.

There's a guy who sits a couple of desks away from me who has the nastiest cough. Whenever he coughs it sounds kind of like he's throwing up in his mouth a little. I can't describe it other than to just tell you it almost makes you want to do the same.

Then there's the other guy who spends all day singing

And then there's this picture hanging outside my office door that I have to see every morning

Re: The Workplace

It's weird that at home when you pop popcorn in the microwave, it doesn't fill the house too badly, yet at work, it spreads like wildfire. I have a bag of kettle korn that I may pop this afternoon...but we shall see.

I have the luxury of working about 3 minutes from my house, so I make it a point to go home every day to have lunch. That way, I get up from my desk and get out for a while.

For the most part, I work in a decent environment, where my co-workers have respect for each other. Our privacy is limited (wide open cubicles), but it could be much worse. My wife telecommutes 2 days a week now, and while I could do the same, it's just as easy for me to come into the office to work since I live so close. When I worked in Falls Church, I telecommuted on Fridays and on piss-poor weather days, but I found that worked much longer days when I worked from home.

do you use collosius? i dont know if i spelled it right.

at lunch, i put my food on my desk and just take nibbles for an hour as i read the warpath. i drink coffee in the morning so coffee gut keeps me from being hungry at lunch.

having your lunch on your desk is the general sign in our office that the person aint doing shit work related for the time being.

usually the boss man will come flying in your office asking you to do something, but with your lunch out, he automatically slows down and is like "so, yeah . .. . . . umm, when you get done lunch im gonna need you to go ahead and move your desk over there. yeah. umm okay. thaaaannnkkss,"

well lunch is over for me.

Back when I was lifting heavy I ate a lot of tuna. Just popping open that can made the whole area smell like it. I had to start bringing in pre-cooked chicken and stuff.
