Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
LOS ANGELES — Rescuers searched Thursday for a 16-year-old Southern California girl who was attempting a solo sail around the world.
Abby Sunderland Feared Lost At Sea I have been following this 16 yr old girl trying to sail around the world solo. She ran into some bad weather and now here Epirb (E mergency P osition I ndicating R adio B eacon) has gone off and they have lost communications with her. She had two Epirbs and they both went off and one would have been attached to her life raft which may indicate that the boat has flipped or sank. Her jorney was controversal because alot of people said she was too young for her parents to allow her to attempt sailing around the world. I hope they find her safe but its not looking too good. |
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
why would you let your kid do this?
|
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
I thought she already completed her trip? I guess not.
I guess I was thinking of this girl: On May 15, Australian 16-year-old Jessica Watson claimed the record after completing a 23,000-mile circumnavigation in 210 days. |
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
Abby set sail at the time she did because she wanted to beat Jessica Watson for the youngest to sail around the world. The problem was it put here where she is at a bad time when the winter storms are kicking and people warned them of this. They still set sail and now she is in the trouble many people worried about.

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

--Theodore Roosevelt
I agree with that but at what age is that OK for the parents to let the child do such a thing. She could not even break the record because early in her trip she had problems with her boat and needed assistance loosing her chance to break the record. |
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
awful story and i hope she is ok
side note i have to ask if fd gave in to the naysayers and started using spell check, or if you are just on a hot streak |

Look on the bright side! Her parents can now enter her into this year's Darwin awards.

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
I hope they find her safe.... but seriously? Who the hell would let their kid do this? Who would even do it themselves?

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
Really don't understand why you would let a 16 year old do this, just doesn't seem smart at all.
|
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
I think the fact that her brother sailed solo around the world at age 17 is probably what helped convince her parents that this would be fine.

Using that kind of logic is like saying, because I didn't blow my hand off with a grenade this time, I probably won't blow my hand off playing with it next time. I would assume sailing is a combination of skill and luck and you have to have both to be successful. Her brother had both, she on the other hand seemed to only have one and also had a severe case of stubbornness, seeing as they didn't want to wait until after the bad storm season settled and she could've sailed on calmer waters. |

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
It's a failure on the parents' part to help the kid maintain a sense of balance in their life.
Pursuit of excellence is great, but it should never come before the days she could have lived from this day forth. At some point, you need to realize that as great as you are at sailing, it's just a hobby. Seems like it should be obvious. But the parents obviously failed to keep things in perspective. |
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
Well looks like she's just fine. Long live happy endings.

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
I also love the people commenting on the link I posted. Talking about how wonderful and brave she is and should be commended for her efforts.
Okay yeah, I agree, the chick is brave and deserves praise for living out her dreams and am definitely glad she's safe. But come the hell on. She wanted to sail around the world at 16! I betcha if she would've died everyone would be talking about what a headstrong child she was and that her parents were idiots and should've channeled her desires into a safer activity. Everyone has their dreams and desires but I think age needs to be taken into account or at least some sort of waiver needs to be signed by her and her parents stating that she knows she's potentially risking her life. I don't know. It all seems a bit sideshow to me. |
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
Damn that's all i have to say about that!!!!

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
Good news. But I'm with you, DRave.
#1, being the youngest to sail around the world, is that really even fame? Does anybody care? You get a stop on Leno and Letterman, after that nobody remembers you did that. It's not like she just won 8 gold medals in one Olympics. #2, risking your life for the pursuit of greatness is retarded. Risk your life to save your country and protect its freedoms? THAT is to be honored. Risking your life to set a record? That's just foolhardy. |

Now for some older thriller seekers they are not living unless they are doing something like this, so for them I say might as well go out doing something you love then sitting around hating your life. |

She just decided to continue with the trip. At that point the parents should have said hey lets wait for a better time to sail around the world. |

With todays communications a person has 24/7 weather info and anything else they need to make educated decisions about when and where they sail. With that said she knew she was heading into this bad weather and made the decision to try and sail through the storm. She could have changed course and sail around or away from the weather front. |

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
Only rich people can be this stupid.
she seems like a rich spoiled brat who gets her way. im surprised FD isnt mad at the hundred of thousands of dollars spent by nearby countries for helicopters, boats and experts to check up on her. when she gets her book deal, and reality tv show i hope those countries get reimbursed. rich people. on the east coast they are stuck up. on the left coast they expect everyone to part the seas for them. |

Falls into the category of riding motorcycles, it just makes no sense. Find something else fun to do that doesn't involve risking your life. |

So if anyone gets lost at sea should they be billed for the search?
im surprised FD isnt mad at the hundred of thousands of dollars spent by nearby countries for helicopters, boats and experts to check up on her.
I think it was the Aussies that had to go look for her, not U.S. tax dollars, so who cares. :)
J/K Sticky situation. Are the parents dumb/negligent for letting her do this, absolutely. No way I let my 17 yr. old son sail solo around the world. However, if the Aussies send a bill to the family what happens when another boat comes into distress in the same area through no fault of it's own? Do they get a bill too? The seas in that area are pretty bad from what I read. |
Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea
I read this a while back, definitly reminds me of a "yuppie 911".

With this known you really have to question the parents motives.

Very pretty girl as well. I think this is different then Abby in that the girl is not doing it alone and they are stopping at times, just seems a heck of a lot safer. Looks like SS you agree with me. |
