Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
When the Redskins open training camp July 29, fans who attend the practices better bring a roster. Familiar names are gone, either to other teams or into an unofficial retirement. Nearly 40 players have been acquired since Mike Shanahan was hired in early January. The makeup of the roster will have a different look, and not just because there are so many new players. Shifting to the 3-4 defense means fewer defensive linemen and more linebackers. But it's never too early to guess the 53-man roster. In this first version, I have 23 players who weren’t on the team for last year’s opener – turnover caused by going 4-12, having an almost entirely new coaching staff and the end of the salary cap era. The adopted model is 25 players apiece on offense and defense and three specialists. RECEIVERS (6) Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Joey Galloway, Bobby Wade, Mike Furrey and Terrence Austin. Analysis: What’s the fun without throwing a couple curveballs, which is why Malcolm Kelly isn’t included. He doesn’t play special teams – that’s why Wade, Furrey and Austin all make the team. Guessing this position is a crapshoot – Thomas is the No. 2 receiver behind Moss by default, and Galloway needs to show he can make it through camp. On his last Denver team, Mike Shanahan carried only five receivers (four active on Sundays), but Austin makes it as the sixth player if he has a good camp returning kicks.
I'd really hate to lose Kelly |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
This is one hypothetical guy predicting the final roster.
I highly doubt that one of either DT or MK get cut in the preseason. I suspect the final WR roster to look like SM, DT, MK, Joey Galloway, Austin, and Furrey. Of course there is always a distinct possibility that the WR roster may change before the start of the season. |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I mean it makes somewhat sense though which got me thinking. I honestly would hope we wouldn't cut him, I do believe Shanahan said he was going to enjoy having Thomas and Kelly for the endzone plays.
Guess we'll find out. |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I think these 2 guys will step up this year and make some big plays for us.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Kelly is going to make the team but he has to step up his game big time to survive after this coming season. I wouldn't bet on Kelly.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I thought I remember hearing about how Kelly was excited after talking schemes with Shanahan and how he was going to utilize him? Regardless, Kelly obviously needs to earn his spot so anything is possible.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
He cannot seperate from defenders and injuries haven't prior to. Still, he's can't be thrown away just yet.

it's always good to "proof read" before posting.:) |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Ha Ha Ha, You just made a ton of enemies from all the fans who "know" there is no way Kelly will get cut from the roster.
Unless of course your talking about him getting a paper cut opening his mail. |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Doubt we'd throw in the towel on him yet. I still think there is some good in MK, hopefully he breaks it open this year. He's been injury riddled for most of his career...That said, this is a monster year for him, if he fails to show up again this year, or god forbid he gets injured again, I say we have to make a move and cut him or try to deal him...not sure for what, but that's a likely scenario.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
he reasoned that 3 receivers would be kept due to teams ability? lol
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Kelly reminds me of a slower version of Roy Williams and that's not real good.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I hope they watched tape of Kelly vs. SanDiego, he had a great game. This kid has high potential.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
As we all know anything is possible. And all this competition is great. May the best 5 or 6 wide outs make the team!
I also am more concerned about our WR corp. than probably any position. I would have to think though that unless another setback for Kelly, he makes the 53.... |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
If you read the full article he also states that Willie Parker will not be on the team via trade to a team who's running back is injured in training camp.
Yes it is a possibility that MK is cut during the preseason, but I find it unlikely. About as likely as a team trading for Willie Parker in the preseason. Of course, it is very possible Willie Parker does not make it on the final roster because he is cut. |

if you look at just the stats yeah.. 5 catches for 109 yards.. one of those catches was like... 84 yards or something? leaving the rest 4 for 25ish.. he showed several nice catches throughout the year but I don't think that he had a dominant game per se |
Staying with the optimistic side. I expect kelly and thomas to explode from better position training and a more coherent and aggresive game plan. I realize stats and film would both say no way, but I say way! Heck. 37 points opening night, kelly 1 td, dt 1 td 120 yds, cooley 2 tds cp 1 td ah/orakpo split a safety. If the writer can fantasize so can I!

This is key. We need people to earn their spots. I hope he makes the team but I am confident that Shananan is going to play the guys who give us the best shot at winning. |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
i would buy into it if Marko was still around...........

speaking of forgot to post that he was cut by the Lions |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Kelly is the type receiver when utilized properly can be extremely effective. He dosen't have the speed to get a four/five yd. seperation from defenders, but he does have the ability to use his size and height to body-up smaller c/b's and make plays. Get him in one-on-one situations and even if he's covered and the ball is thrown properly he has the advantage.
He should be a keeper, but with such a log-jam at the position it's difficult to determine until the pads go on. |

Damn! |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
This wouldn't surprise me and it shouldn't surprise anyone. Shanahan has shown that he is willing to part ways with any player that doesn't fit his scheme, regardless of how much money or resources the team spent on the player before he got here.
Damn!
he's available! |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
The one thing that does make Kelly a liability is that, he won't be a starter and he dosen't play s/t's. That fact alone could make him expendable.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I think Kelly makes it as do DT, Santana, Mike Furrey because he can play more than just reciever and is a ST-er, Terrence Austin makes it as long as he doesn't F up in preseason, and I say its a toss up between Galloway and Wade, with me giving the edge to Wade in terms of youth, and the fact he is a ST-er as well.
But still this WR core is poor, and needs upgrading, such as a TO or Vincent Jackson type player. |

Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Why the heck not? His draft status is the only reason we are seriously talking about him making the team. Lets cut ties with these last few Snyder picks if they dont produce. He can live happily wherever Rod Gardner and Brandon Lloyd are.

Ok, well sure we haven't seen yet what a good QB will do with our current WR's, and should definitely make them better, but how I still look at it is which of our WR's could start on other teams in our division, my answer is one, Moss. In order to win, you need more than one to be successful, IMO. |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I'm gunna lay it out here, I don't think Kelly will be cut. He will be developed into our over the middle 3rd down clutch receiver and fade specialist. All this guy needs to do is learn to run a slant on 3rd and 5 and a fade to the corner of the endzone from inside the 20. He's obviously not going to be successful doing double moves...just not quick enough
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I have no idea what kind of WR Kelly is going to be , however he looked very fast after the catch at OU . Hope like hell he has a great deal of desire and dedication , IMO he has the ability .

They have made the team the last few years on promise and potential. They have not earned it. It is time to SHOW on the field that you belong. It is up to Kelly and Thomas to do it. Not the coaches, the scheme, the QB...all of the excuses are old. Step up boys. It is all on you. |

San Diego had their 2nd and 3rd stringers in there. |

Isn't Kelly considered a 2nd stringer himself? Kelly has potential, if given the chance with the new staff I think he will succeed. !st year he was hurt and out of shape, last year he got better towards the end of the season. |

i get what your saying but again i say mabe, maybe not. if kelly or thomas had been drafted by a different team they might be considered studs right now. most winning teams have a stud wr. the skins are not quite a winning team yet. |

I just don't think he's any good. I hope I'm wrong but everytime he's been given a chance he really doesn't get open. We'll see... |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
I haven't seen much from Kelly or Thomas since they were drafted. I had a wildly divergent opinion of the two as pro prospects since coming into the league, but their performances have been remarkably similar. Part of that is that they've had to compete with each other for playing time, because I feel that Moss had his touches scripted for him most of the Zorn era, and that Thomas, Kelly, and Randle El were sort of forced to work around him (and Cooley, when he was healthy).
It would have been nice if one had been much more prepared than the other and had taken all the reps and succeeded, but I think, legitimately, neither is ahead of the other. It's really Shanahan's first challenge is deciding what to do with these two. He hasn't been impressed by either in minicamp. It's too early to throw up his hands and quit on these guys, but they can't be allowed to compete with each other any longer. One or the other really needs to be pushed into the spotlight and allowed to fail. With Cooley and Davis both getting their touches -- remember Cooley is learning to play all receiving positions in the offense so the Redskins can choose to get the ball to him without having to change the gameplan -- this isn't going to be a three receiver offense. That's more or less why Randle El was cut. If Moss wins his spot in the starting lineup, one of the these two is going to have to learn to contribute on special teams for the rest of his rookie deal. |

We'll see...
Kelly played really well at the start of last year, but when he got that finger injury, he really allowed it to cut into parts of his game that it shouldn't have. When it healed, he finished very strong with Thomas out. I have legit questions about his ability to perform with pain.
If there's anyone here that is familiar with his performances/successes/struggles at OU, jump in here, please. |
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
If Kelly doesn't play well we all know what dreaded two letters are coming. T.O. I bet all of my skins nick-nacks that if they Kelly does poorly and they cut him T.O. will get a nod to see what he can do. I'm still out to lunch as to whether it would be good.
|
Re: Malcolm Kelly possible cut?
Kelly, I think is going to do good. He is a big deep threat especially with McNabb. We need to trade for Santana's little brother and let him return kicks. Two Moss's incase one gets hurt. We don't need no two Westbrooks though.
