Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
I was looking at this ESPN article about Sam Bradford's contract negotiations and I watched the video after seeing the 'Skins tag and I noticed ESPN has Justin Tryon as their #5 breakout player for this upcoming season.
Am I missing something? I was completely unaware that people think he's a candidate to break out this season, especially considering we have Hall and Rogers at our top two and I doubt he pushes either down the depth chart. Has anybody even noticed him playing better in minicamps/practices? I don't think he did anything last year to warrant being on that list lol. |
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
That would be awesome if it did happen, but who the hell knows. Hall and Rogers aren't that good so its definitely possible. Tryon was a lot better last year than he was his rookie year, so hopefully he can keep improving.

Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
Someone mentioned this in another thread. I basically feel same as you. Am i missing something was my thought as well. Would be great if i was and we dont have to pony up a big contract for carlos in 2011, it was also mentioned in another article that th redskins have put alot of resources in our dback field over the alst few years. Ever since gibbs 2.0. But we are also listed as a team with the worst under 25 depth. I would like to see that same list after the season.

Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
keeping my fingers crossed for him...would be huge if he could step up and be a player.
|
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
Tryon had really good coverage numbers last year...but so did Doughty, Moore, and D-Hall (particularly Doughty). Rogers ended up leading the team in passes defensed.
Basically, you can attribute all of the defensive struggles to Horton and Smoot in the first three games, Landry in the last ten, and team-wide preposterous coverage breakdowns pretty much the whole year. |
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
Someone went as far as to say Tryon will eventually replace Rogers and that he could actually do so before the end of the season. That may be a stretch, but it could also have something to do with Rogers and his contract situaton, coupled with the uncertainty of a new CBA. Tryon did play well in spurts last year, whether he's ready for full time duty as a starter remains to be seen. He's untested in the deep passing game, he spent the majority of his snaps covering receivers in short areas.

If he could catch the ball, "hands of stone" would have probably led the team in interceptions, as well. I think that Carlos could make the Pro Bowl if he would work hard to improve his ability to catch the ball. A few key interceptions would make a big difference in how he is perceived as a player. |
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
I would be floored if Tryon did anything other than decent nickle coverage this year...he barely made the squad last 2 yrs. I really question the writers depth of research. I really think he is just looking at age and stats.
Anyone watching Tryon would question this assessment. I see no reason to put this guy as the #5 breakout candidate this year. Is it possible, sure....but monkeys might fly out of my... ya know.... |
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
rogers needs to step up to the elite level that he should already be doing same with landry both underachieving considering there potential

Not the best assessment of Tyron from what I've seen. The only reason this kid still has a job is we are so weak in the DB/Secondary. We need an upgrade and soon over Rogers which should happen next season. As well as Hall coverage skills stink. The is a position of big weakness on our Defense that needs to be addressed. We need a true #1 CB that offenses have to prepare for and/or stay away from, something we have not had since probably Champ. I'll believe it when I see it from shrimp Tyron. I don't expect to see anything from this kid. I thought from day one and still believe he's a wasted draft pick. If D Green thinks the kid will make it. Tyron has worked with the very best and has that chance of a lifetime working for him. I hope I'm wrong. Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
I think DG (Darrell Green) picked him to be a good DB.
|
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
I wouldn't be shocked. He's better than some seem to think.
|
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
He was the breakout guy last summer too I believe. Remember I was saying at this time (or earlier) last year how coaches were impressed with how much he had improved during OTAs and mini-camps

Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
Tryon was a good draft prospect. He needs an opportunity to get better.

Tryon was the best player available when we picked.

He's a free agent at the end of the year, and we'll have to choose between giving a 4-5 year contract at roughly $5 million per year to a 30 year old corner (in 2011), or let him walk and try to replace him.
The other thing to keep in mind is that we might also have to replace Hall in the same offseason. He can opt to be a FA in 2011 and give back his money. He's not going to do that, obviously, but we might choose to cut him a check and get rid of him if he's a poor scheme fit. And, ultimately, if both Rogers and Hall end up being free agents, I'm not sure we can count on Barnes and Tryon to be a starting CB duo. |
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
He worked out last off-season ,with the greatest CB of all time, Darrell Green. And supposedly,Tryon and Hall worked this off season with him.I dont know this to be a fact but to me Green should be a secondary coach in the NFL.

Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
^ Ive heard that DG was a really poor technique guy. He had just such ridiculous physical gifts that he was able to get away with anything. Maybe in his later years (10-20) he refined his touch. Also see video below:

I didnt realize he just turned 29 though. At this point to think/wish he can get interceptions is more then pushing it. Thinking about how old our corners are kind of makes you wishfull someone is gonna step up. Im with you, i dont trust him deep. |

I agree. DG's greatest asset was his freakish speed. You can't teach that. |

I think a healthy dose of the coverage misques falls in the lap of the coaches. Towards the end of the year Coach Gray even accepted some blame about the defensive playcalls for the secondary:
http://www.csnwashington.com/pages/redskins @00:19 seconds "...the coverages have been 2 deep and 3 deep (zone) I wish they would have been man to man....what position are we putting our guys in really need to self evaluate the coaching and also the players lets look at this thing together and see how we can get it fixed and hopefully the next four weeks we can get it fixed and get back to where we were"
I saw a secondary that didn't execute Cover 2 and Cover 4 defenses very well the entire season. The transition or hand-off from Corner to Safety was horrible, the DBs almost never jammed the receivers at the line to slow them down which basically gave the WR a full head of steam to run right at the Safety. Also, the CB/S just flat-out dropped some coverages far too many then what you would expect from a defense of our caliber but the common theme was that most if not all of these gaffs came in Zone Cover 2/Cover 4. You mention Horton i distincts remember 2 games where he was playing deep 1/2 Cover 2 safety and was clearly beat. The 1st was against the Rams but thankfully he got away with a shove and the QB was under enough pressure to force an underthrow: NFL Videos: Redskins Defense Highlight, WK 02 vs. Rams 2009 The 2nd was against the Lions we're in Cover 2 Zone again and he gets beat commits PI and the Lions get 1st and goal. Against the Saints Landry once in Cover 2 on a double move then got beat as he properly played his scheme assignment in Cover 4 but Smoot didn't. I also think it was unconscionable for the coaching staff to allow that to happen. -Oh, I think Tryon is coming along well and if he continues to improve i could see him earn increased playing time. |
Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
I think he will be a decent nickl/dime guy.

Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
I think Barnes was drafted as a potential starting CB after discovering Tryon had no real shot. I can't get any word on how well Barnes is doing....is he gunna be a bust?...are they planning to use him on teams, a nickle guy, a 4th CB?
Who is our 4th CB? Tryon?....is Barnes currently #5? Someone please tell us how Barnes is doing. |

Very consistent with the remarks made during the season by those with access to the coaches tape. We tried to play a lot of zone last year without bothering to teach zone to players who played a limited amount of it under Grilliams. Blache/Gray/Jackson might all be good coaches, but they failed last year at some absurdly basic levels. |

It's unfortunate but to hang your expectations on a guy coming out of the draft at that position it's pretty much what you would expect. Is it that you haven't heard good.. or that you've heard bad? Or a mixture? What about Kareem Moore? Heard he was getting most of the 1st team reps at FS. |

He's going into his 5th year?? He is what he is. A slightly better than average corner that simply has 0 play making skills. Someone that needs secondary help will over pay him. If Tryon improves then I could see him replacing Rogers in 11. |

Speaking Wednesday from the Colts locker room in Indianapolis, Tryon said getting traded from the Redskins was a big opportunity, and he's taken full advantage of his time with a new team. "The crossover was wonderful," Tryon said. "It's a huge blessing." ....He was traded following training camp to Indianapolis, where he's become a key contributer down the stretch. The Colts' Jerraud Powers was placed on injured reserve last month and Kelvin Hayden suffered a neck injury. So Tryon started the Colts' final four games of the regular season and if Hayden can't go this weekend against the New York Jets -- Hayden hasn't practiced this week -- Tryon will get the call. ...Tryon expected to be a special teams contributer in Indianapolis but was in the Colts' starting lineup in Week 1. ...And he still talks to Redskins Hall of Famer Darrell Green every other week or so and seeks guidance, he said. Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
While some will interpret his comments in the most cynical fashion, Tryon was pretty classy, with him crediting the CBs on the roster and Darrell Green for helping him during his time here.

Re: Justin Tryon Breaking Out?
It looks like he's got the same role in Indy that he had here -- a nickel corner who occasionally steps in if someone goes down. They can have him.
