Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I used to hate Shanahan's Broncos because of their cut-blocking...but now I'm its biggest fan :)

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
There's going to be some fights!!
|
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
On McNabb's TD pass I saw Trent with a nice cut block, it helps with the passing game too as it opens passing lanes.
|
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Yea,we might as well enjoy it now.
As soon as Shanny's Zone Cut Block scheme sweeps ESPN's Cowboys all the way to the superbowl..we can expect a rule change to be instituded. Specially,if we beat brady and the patriots in the big game...lol I'm just kidding..lol |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
In high school we were taught to cut block, especially in pass protection. Therefore it is hard for me to condemn the practice. I can understand how defenders would be unhappy with the tactic, though.
|
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
It's really only dangerous if a defender is engaged, and I'm pretty sure it's a 10 or 15 yards penalty.
|
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Shanahan learn that technique from Bob McKittrick old OL coach from the 49ers (dead). Just ask Howie Long how he liked it? He once threatened McKittrick to kick his ass because of it.

Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
I knew you'd all come along. Just like you'd all fall in love with Chris Pronger if hell freezes over and he becomes a Cap.
Once you own something, you'll say you'll like it all along. (apparently one study about confabulation data showed such behavior among people. |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
You'll really have no idea of how excited I am for this season. For the first time in my life (23) we have a franchise QB and SB winning HC at the same time. Throw in a Defense like ours and we honestly have a shot at 10+ wins for the next 3-4 years. I truly think MS and DM will win a super bowl before it's all said and done.

As long as you don't cut a defensive player who's already engaged, it's fine and perfectly legal. I also think your head has to be up or near the defender's hip, not down at their feet to be legal (and safer). The 80s 49ers did leg whips and much worse tactics of blocking. As long as we're not doing Flozell Adams-type blocks because we're getting beat...it's not an issue. Coach Shanahan knows what he's going, I have no doubts our players will do it properly and we'll have a great running game this year. |

Although I am excited as well remember that it was one preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. Thats like a top 25 school playing Appalachian State (Sorry Michigan). Do not get your hopes up too high. Try to "stay medium" |

If he became a Cap, obviously I'd root for him, but that doesn't mean I like him. He is a d-bag, and that is what he will always will be. And yeah I'm not a fan of cut blocking either but obviously we are going to be using it so I have no choice but to sit back and hope we don't critically injure some guy on D and have to face massive backlash because of it. |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
There's a difference between cut blocking and chop blocking. Not a big one, but there is. That slight difference also determines if it's legal...and if the opponent gets injured from it.

i agree. but these skins at least looked like an NFL team. i swear there were times last year when the skins looked like anything but... |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
If it works, it will under Shanny, you will love it but I would suggest watch out for Brady "his Rule" and Billy boy. Those two are something else when it comes to rule making and rule breaking, honest opinion - no smack intended!

Lose to Bears and Titans? That's a bit crazy.

As soon as Shanny's Zone Cut Block scheme sweeps ESPN's Cowboys all the way to the superbowl..we can expect a rule change to be instituded. l
There already might be.Last night in the Giants game there a few holding calls and Gruden caught the fact the there are 2 officials in the Offensive backfield now watching the linemen. There is not much of a difference between a chop and a cut but how would you feel if it wipedout Orakpo(sp) or Haynsworth bet it would be dirty then. |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
I think it is only fair...if you are going create so many rules to protect the offensive 'stars' and to create offense like horse collar, Brady rule, hits to the head and legalizing certain forms of holding, turn around is only fair play.
If we see a rash of season ending knee injuries directly attributed to cut blocks, it is only fair to pass a rule. To say the rule will get passed only because of our possible success is silly. |

The NFL is a copy-cat league, seeing the success Shanahan's offenses' have had with this particular scheme, is there any wonder why more teams don't utilize it? |

Then you would say it's fair to asume it won't make many friends among the leagues defenders? |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Im not a fan of cut blocking for all the obvious reasons.
|
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
I have been anti Alex Gibbs for a long time because of this scheme. But I also have hated Donovan McNabb. I'm enough of a win-whore to cast aside my disdain and root for both this year if it means the team is doing well.
|
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Every team utilizes cut blocking to some degree. Some more than others.
I'm in favor of whatever works. |

I remember back in 2004-2005 or so the Bronco O-line was ending the season of several players including a Redskin. Remember this?: Sports: Stop the chop? Broncos called out "A below-the-knee block by Broncos right tackle George Foster on defensive tackle Tony Williams during the Bengals' 23-10 win Monday night has created a brouhaha across the NFL. The Bengals believe Foster's block, which dislocated and fractured Williams' left ankle and ended his season, was unnecessary and another example of the Broncos' unsavory blocking methods. Jaguars defensive end Paul Spicer was lost earlier this season with a broken leg after being blocked by Broncos left tackle Matt Lepsis. The league determined Lepsis' block, like Foster's, was legal..... The problem is some teams, like the Broncos, have a long-standing reputation for being particularly adept at the below-the-knee block. In just the past four seasons, five players have been severely hurt by a similar block while playing against the Broncos. At his news conference last week, Bill Cowher was asked what he thought of the block. The Steelers coach said it was uncalled for and warned the Broncos to "do unto others as you want them do onto you." Shanahan was "a little offended" by Cowher's remarks.... "I've been in the league 27 years now, and from the first year to this year I've never taught a block below the waist," Redskins veteran offensive line coach Joe Bugel said. "I think the integrity of the game is, if you're an offensive lineman, you block above the waist, you block on your numbers, you block on the hips - but you don't block anybody's knees." |
Re: Redskins Learn Nuances of Cut-Blocking
Axing cut block a no-brainer - NFL - ESPN
Another article that is brought up by some no name QB that agrees with my point of the inconsistency of the NFL to create so many rules to protect offensive players but not for defensive players. ''The inconsistency in allowing the cut block borders on the absurd. Think about all the rules that promote offense and protect offensive players: A defensive player can barely breathe on a quarterback without getting a 15-yard penalty ... a wide receiver can't be hit when he goes across the middle (until he has the ball) ... a defensive back can't bump a receiver after five yards ... and then there's all the offensive pass interference that isn't called. But it's OK to block a defensive lineman at the knees, one of the most vulnerable places for a professional football player. |

Buges def was against low blocking.
