Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
I'm kinda getting tired of hearing the Doughty bashing, so let's look at some of the other guys who helped contribute to the 17 point collapse. I think SS is out of town so I'm going to pick up the slack.
Fred Davis - Lazy effort on the blocked FG. Jammal Brown - Jumped offsides on a 3rd and 1, which ending up leading to the blocked FG. Gotta really wonder what happens if we convert the 1st down there and maybe go in for 6. Jim Haslett - I understand he wants to be aggressive and while I like that, Schaub was just picking the zones apart. How about mixing things up just a bit and dialing back on the blitzing just a tad? Larry Johnson - You're not Barry Sanders. When it doubt, give someone the shoulder and go down. You had no business cutting back and trying to pull off a Marcus Allen miracle run. Stephon Heyer - Thanks for proving again why you're not starting material. Anyone else deserve to be on the shit list? |

Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Phillip Buchanon, good job in leaving the NFL's best receiver on an island against our 2nd string Free Safety. Oh and be sure to thank Doughty for taking all the blame.
Casey Rabach, please tell the coaches that you are not that good anymore so they can replace you. They seem to think you are a great player for some reason. Jammal Brown (again) WTF were you thinking?!?! |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
McNabb for only tossing for 400 and some yards and not 500 like the oter guy. The kicker for getting iced. That's such a gay thing to do.
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Haslett. Play to the strength of your personnel and mask their weaknesses. All of the guys in the preceding posts are off the hook if we played more man and cover 3 zone, period.
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Kyle Shanahan - mostly awesome, but the end around was a head-scratcher of a call
Chris Horton - really bad job with jumping offsides Haslett - on 4th and ten, you make sure that either DHall or Los are at least on the same side of the field as Andre Johnson every OLB - eventually don't you learn that Schaub might be faking the handoff and bootlegging? Devin Thomas - why aren't you so good that you force Shanahan to play you more at WR? |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Good job MattyK, I have to agree 110%. I was suprised to see Heyer at LT when TW went down, I thought Brown would go to LT and Heyer play RT.
The O-Line gets a F on Run-Blocking too. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
1. Gano...come on man, stop biting on them jedi mind tricks
2. Reed...because its fun 3. Joey Galloway...dude right through the hands |

Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
The whole running game and those responsible for it.
McNabb and his recievers did plenty. If we had a running game to go with it we hold on to the ball a lot longer and kick much shorter field goals and our defense gets more rest. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Someone care to explain why we kept Johnson for again, really would like to know. Can't we cut him and bring Torain up? I forget how the PS works.

Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Hmmm........where'e the.....regular smack down guy?

Sure there were some other issues like McNabb throwing deep on 3rd down when all we needed was 10 or so a couple times, but I liked the aggressive play calling. The more I think about Fred Davis, the more pissed I get. At first I was thinking it was poor special teams coaching because Davis was forced to block two people, however, even when that's the case, you ALWAYS put a body on the outside rusher and let the guy to your left get the inside guy. Really, matty, excellent post. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
It was all Jason Campbell's fault.
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Just wanted to defend Doughty a bit, and this seems like the best place...
My take on the Johnson TD was that we ran an aggressive play, rushing 6 men, and the success hinged on QB pressure. We knew that Doughty can't cover AJ, but we were counting on getting to the QB before the play developed. We were able to pressure Schaub, but he made a defender miss and stepped up to make an excellent pass. We gambled and lost. I would have called the same play -- I like aggressive defense on 4th and 10 -- it just didn't work out because Schaub is a great QB. |

Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Haslett- for calling an all out blitz on a critical 3rd and 15. Blitzing too much.
Larry Johnson - for running like the tip toe burglar. On the opposite side, game ball to Dirty 30. The guy is playing well. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Why are we always giving wide receivers a ten yard cushion off the line?

I thought that was more about Pass blocking and his impersonation of Alex Barron. I thought he was solid on the right side. |

I agree to a certain point. One of the things that drives me crazy in a zone cover defense is you need to be very careful when handing off a receiver in the critical 4 to 10 second mark of a pass play. Most smart QB's on a pass play will not hold onto a ball any more than that amount of time and most will deliver the pass in that window. Why release a receiver in that time span to cover an empty zone? I would rather you stay on a receiver than break off to an empty zone. Plus I would rather a reciever be open underneath than let one loose deep. DB's have to be smart enough and use their own discretion form time to time in a zone. Don't be a robot, use your brain and think. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Freelance we don't need that remember that's what Lavar use to do and that got him kicked of the team.
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
And that's Heyer's fault?
All I was referring to was Heyer's holding call. I didn't say anything about where he lined up. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
I really don't see where Buchanon played his coverage wrong. Doughty was in position, so what did he do wrong??
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
That run by LJ was simply pathetic. Where is Betts when you need him?
Carlos Rogers...you got your pick and I guess you took the rest of the day off. Walter pissed all over you. Jim Haslett...Did you forget how to adjust while in the UFL? Watching Schaub run that booleg 30 times got old. Blache would've never let that happen! |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Chuck Brown, u da man!!
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
1) Doughty + Buchannon on *that* play.
2) F.Davis whiffing on FG block! 3) Run blocking - no holes, Portis - no runs. No time off the freaking clock to protect a 17 point lead. 4) Entire pass defense for giving up 300 yards to two receivers after finally getting 27 points from the offense. Really? 5) Devin Thomas for nothing. 6) NFL for allowing "icing" the kicker by calling a timeout AFTER the play happens. 7) McNabb for airing it out twice when we needed 3-4 yards. -- once at end to Moss, where running it could have made it a 46-47 yard FG -- once in 4th quarter to Galloway, when we just needed a 1st down 8) Myself -- for actually believing we had finally put it all together. Still, I think this was one of the first recent losses that I felt somewhat okay afterwards. Because compared to our 9-7 losses where we really sucked, this one - I felt like we actually played well. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Did we have any Pass Interference penalties? If not, I consider that a problem with them torching us for 500 yards........
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Clinton Portis: You scored 2 touchdowns, but as Matty alluded to Jamaal Brown's jump offsides call, if Portis didn't trip over his own feet on 2nd down and get the first down or get in the endzone again then its over we win. I don't know if you guys remember the play before the offsides but Portis had a nice lane and just had to keep his feet under him to have been able to get the first down. AND a faster back would have scored on the play. There was plenty of room over there for him to get to the EZ.

Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Ouch.... did not know that. Is that passing yards or just yards allowed per game?
I know we aren't last in all categories. |

The Redskins Defense for being last in the NFL and giving up 453 yards per game
In todays NFL turnovers and sacks are starting to serve as identifiers for the leagues best defenses. Besides it's only 2 games and one of them was against what I'm not afraid to call the NFL's best offense. We really should get used to it. We'll be lucky to be in the top 15 of the traditional defensive rankings. The style is now feast or famine. We're either going to destroy teams with our defense or we're going to struggle. What happens will differ on a week to week basis. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Colt wouldn't have lost:)
|
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
On the flip side we are 7th in the league in passing yards and passing yards per game. Right behind the Texans who are 6th, and in most other categories other than passing we are 14th.
We are mddle of the road in most of the defensive categories. Including points allowed. In contrast to us in our defensive stats the Cowboys who are 0-2 are in the top 5 in total offense. But in the bottom half in points scored. So I am not going to put to much in the numbers game. WE all have to remember that this is week 2 for a completely new defensive scheme. The Packers struggled early last year with their switch to the 3-4, but by the end of the year they were 11-5 and one of the better defenses in the NFL. |
Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!
Yea our D will play very good at times and bad at others.. Next week I wouldn't be shocked if the Rams only scored once.

I would be shocked if the Rams scored. It's going to be one of those bittersweet wins. The type where you're happy to get a win but at the same time you're disappointed that you don't really get much of a feel for where you're at as a football team. Sort of like when we destroyed the Bills during preseason. I just hope we can kill Philly in two weeks. I would take extra pleasure in exposing Vick as a "passer." |
