The rest of the season

Gotta play for pride. I can't see Gibbs letting these guys give up on the season
|
What I really think Gibbs will try to do with the rest of the season is identify the 15 or so players that he will keep as a "core" while cutting the rest of the players loose. Essentially the rest of the season will be an on the job try-out.
|
hate to say it, but with a #3 pick we could probably still get mike williams... and spend the remaining time trying out jacobs, mccants, etc...
I'd love to try and win too though... I always like to see the skins win, which has really made this year hard. |
Play for a high draft pick, but it's not like they have a choice. If it was that simple, why couldn't they have played for pride from the beginning and win more games?
During locker room interviews after each loss, players continue to refer to "keeping it close" and "staying with an opponent", -- it appears that's as much as they're capable of. |
Even if they finished 8-8 that usually equals a top 20 or even top 15 pick.
I don't see that happening though, I see them finishing 6-10 at best. |

He'll be the highest rated WR in the draft, and depending on how everybody finishes, Miami and San Fransisco could be ahead of us in the draft order. And both of those teams need wide receivers. Start rooting for the Phins and Niners. |
I usually turn my attention to the draft pick at this point, but with Gibbs as coach i just can't bring myself to do that. When Gibbs loses it hurts me more than they did when Marty or Spurrier lost. I just can't shift into draft pick mode. I hope they can win some of these last 5 so that they have some optimism heading into next year. The only game left on the schedule that looks unwinnable to me is Philly. Not that they will win the other 4, but I just can't turn my back with Gibbs as coach.

That's probably what Gibbs has started doing since he put Ramsey in at quarterback, but I think he also tries to keep that objective in line with the overall and ultimate goal of winning every game. I think he's playing Ramsey now because he feels Ramsey gives the team a better opportunity to win, and I think we've seen more opportunities for McCants and Jacobs and Cooley because he feels those guys are simply performing as well or better than their teammates, and they also give the team a chance to win. Gibbs will never knowingly tank games for the sake of better draft picks or "looking to next year". But he will play the best guys that give the team the best chance to win, and he will get what he can for the guys that don't fit that bill. I think we'll see some trades this offseason, and I think guys like McCants, Jacobs and Cooley could become a part of that long-term core of players that Gibbs will lean on in the future, as long as they perform well in these last games of the season. This is definitely try-out time for everybody on the roster, but looking for Redskins players means looking for winners, and winning will always be goal number one with Joe Gibbs, no matter what the record or the draft stakes. |
goota try and win them all and try to build something positive for next year
|
A postive ending to this season will do much more for us than a top 3 pick. We need confidence going into next year, not one extra star player.
|
if we could meet all possible needs right now we'd need a WR, C, DE, TE (blocking), OG, DE, DT, SS in roughly that order...
|
maybe try out rock as a short yardage guy? he filled that role pretty well last year...
|
I would agree with WR, C, DE and DT. I think we are ok at blocking TE with Royal, OG with Thomas and Dockery and SS Ryan Clark. He doesn't get beat like a drum, also known as Matt Bowen. I would like to jettison Gardner and draft Mike Williams.
|
bowen fits williams system so well though... if only he could cover he'd be a perfect fit...
|
This is going to be a weak draft this year. The core players on our team need to be sorted out over the next few weeks so the organization can be very specific in the offseason in addressing the needs. You have to play to win. Let the 49ers and Fish fight over Leinart and Williams.

Build a positive, winning attitude, and evaluate who the "Core Redskins" are on this team. Absolutely no way Gibbs would EVER tank a game, btw.
HTTR: C'mon! Are the Giants and Cowboys really that good, in your opinion? The Gints are 5-6 and have lost a bunch in a row, have big time injuries, and a rookie QB; the boys are 4-7 and very unsettled. We could well win both those games. Of course, we need to play better than we have, but they are winable, and 6-10 is very realistic. I hold out hope of 7-9, meaning we upset either the iggles or vikes. But 6-10 would be a nice finish, given that we're 3-8. |
I think we have a realistic shot at beating the Giants, Cowboys and 49ers.
Notice I said 6-10 at best. |

By the time the Vikings come to play us, they'll probably be in the wildcard race. We could play the role of spoiler that game....don't you guys think? That would be a nice way to end the season... |
Gibb's will be playing for pride but I am rooting for draft pick's. :biggthump
Sometimes you have to go backward's to go forward, we can generate plenty of optimism to build off of with a great draft! Talk to Carolina, Kansas city, Dallas, Seattle, or St. Louis about building momentum from 1 season to the next. |
yeah but i always want to see the redskins win
|
If we win 4 out of the last 5, we'll go 7-9 and still be able to get a decent draft pick....maybe in the teens or something.
But whats more important for me right now is beating the Giants and getting a damn win in our division for once! |
Heres a scenario:
We have our 1st, 4th, 6th, and 7th round picks right? (please correct me if I'm wrong) 1. Trade Gardner to 49ers for their 3rd round pick 2. Trade Samuels (if he doesn't restructure) to Carolina for their 2nd round pick Draft either a WR or DE in the 1st. Grab a Center or WR in the 2nd. Draft another interior O-lineman in the 3rd, and get a QB in the 4th. |
Rocks lighter and not quite the same guy he was last year.
I don't see us taking the foot off the gas and coasting the year in but maybe auditioning is taking place as we speak. Could explain the longer look Betts is getting and might tell us why there seems to be little rush to get proven players back, although that may be a very real reason in that the players are really hurt. If we start to see more Taylor and McCants and less Coles or Gardner then it could be said we are getting ready for next year but so be it . At least if we can remain competitive and figure out what we have to build on it would be something to take from the season but don't play for a draft pick. We finish where we finish hopefully I would say we were 6-10 top ten choice and go out fighting like we have done in every game this year. |

We have to upgrade our line, if we do that and can actually run the ball and force team's to over committ to stopping the running game that will open it up for the passing game, we will then find that our WR's are more than adequate, we defiently have to deal down with our #1 in so doing we can get a center or an O-lineman that we can convert, if there is an impact wr in the second rd we should have enough for him whomever it is and another O-lineman, then we can try to address the rest of our need's with what should be enough draft pick's. A 2 for Samuels, and a 3 for Gardner wishfully plus dealing out of the top 10 should net us a decent draft, the way our line is blocking I don't see us any lower than #5 pick in the draft. |

I agree. I dont think Minnesota is going to melt down as bad as they have in years passed, they NEVER play well outdoors in the cold. Seriously, if the game was in Minnesota, I wouldnt give us a prayer, but they SUCK in the cold. I think we can win that game too. |
Honestly. Leaving this season on a small winning streak could really mean a lot to our guys attitude. You never play for a draft pick, you gotta keep your troops going!

I agree. It would also help Ramsey solidify himself as our franchise QB. |
And somehow I just don't see Coach Gibbs giving the guys a pep talk by telling them, "We tank the next 5 games guys and we cinch a high round pick!" Joe plays to win games period, whether it be now or in the future.
|
ramsey will... it looked to me that his game vs. the steel wasn't too horrible... top team in the NFL and in it til the very end? good game. good defense yes... but once our o gets simply capable, look for our D to play awesome and maybe we'll be similar to the ravens... billick is a good offensive mind even without the high ranked O to back it up... makes ya wonder.
|
Thats right VTskins. Our offense dosent have to be great, it dosent even have to be good... we just have to be capable. If we can put up merley 20 points, which it somthing we havent done this year, but in the NFL is really not *that* hard, we probly would have won 5 more games. We just have to get an offense that is capable.
|
offiss, people keep harping on the dline cause our sack count isn't great and we're forced to use LBs, safeties and corners to blitz... its the only weak spot on our D, though an upgrade to SS and a spare CB for depth wouldn't hurt either... on O, well... our WRs are NOT good enough, at least not from their recent showing (unless you think their problems are all from bad schemes), our O could use a new center and possibly a guy to replace dockery for sure, and a short yardage back, another TE, and a playmaking WR are not out of the question. Our offense is a real mess right now.

Exactly, that guy. Our offense is f-ed up right now. But going back to D-line. If you think about it, when we have a straight 4 man rush, the QB can freaking smoke a cigarrette back there with all the time he has. That's why our team blitzes more than any other team in the league. We either need a pass rushing DE, or another big tackle to compliment Griffin. Although, I do like Salave'a. A DE should be number either no.1 or 2 on their list this offseason. |
I definitely think we can use some new blood at DE, I just don't want to see us breaking the bank on some high priced FA.
|
"Playing" for a high draft pick makes no sense. If all we want is a high draft pick, why even play? Just forfeit the games.
You play to win. And that's what we should continue to do. |
The only draft picks I like are in the top 10. It just seems to me that any 1st rounder below that is kinda risky considering how much you give up and what the failure rate of those guys is. If we get a 1st rounder in the teens, I'd rather trade down to pick up a few extra picks and let Gregg Williams and Joe Bugel work their magic. That being said, I want to win out.
|
We've been getting high draft picks year after year and it hasn't helped. This team needs to find ways to win instead of finding ways to lose.
