Jeff Fisher: ESPN asked coaches to take timeouts late on Monday night

How far has MLB fallen? GAME 3 was less watched than the Titans Jags MNF game.

30-3 final

What do you guys think about these Timeouts asked by ESPN? I was wondering if Tenn was just padding stats but I guess not.

I think that's a dangerous precedent.

Re: Jeff Fisher: ESPN asked coaches to take timeouts late on Monday night

I have always believed that the networks cut away from the game way too often. There is no need for it other than the fact that they want to pay their airtime obligations to sponsors. Frankly they are selling too much airtime and as you can see it has affected the outcome of at least one NFL game.

Personally it pisses me off to watch football because of all of the commercial breaks. I would much rather listen to a commentator ramble on about some football related topic than cut away to a stupid ass Geico commercial.

Think of it this way if you were interrupted during sex as much as a football game gets interrupted then you would be pretty pissed off. Now I am not saying that football is like sex but it's pretty freakin close.

Wow! However I will agree, that I hate it when the network breaks for a commercial after an extra point, comes back, and then breaks again after the kickoff. That drives me nuts.

LOL @ Angry.

I'm speechless..lol!

But yes, the networks breaking away to a commercial for every little stoppage of play is ridiculous. I'm surprised they don't go to commercial while the teams are calling the play in the huddle.

Re: Jeff Fisher: ESPN asked coaches to take timeouts late on Monday night

They asked Fisher to do it, and he said No. Del Rio decided to do it, but I don't think he was forced. Either way it's dumb considering the risk for injury on both teams.

I hate the commercials as well way to many. After a TD there are so many breaks before the other team takes the field offensively, it is ridiculous.

Re: Jeff Fisher: ESPN asked coaches to take timeouts late on Monday night

Yeah the commercials mean nothing other than they pay a large chunk of the money for the games to air in the first place.

That said, maybe Jeff Fisher should review the contracts his employer (the NFL) has with the networks and realize it's not the networks that have stipulated there be a set amount of commercial time (at minimum). Granted, the networks aren't complaining about it but ultimately the league reaps the greater reward

And that's all I'm going to say

I get this but they can't let it impact the result of games. That's got to be the line in the sand.

ESPN has forgotten about the "S" in their name...they're concentrating far too much on the "E".

I agree. Unfortunately both sides can be kept happy if the team in the lead like the Titans just waits to call timeout when there is one second left on the play clock. That way the team in the lead drains the clock, the NFL gets its timeout...and fans get bored.

Haha, no. I'm not going to share contracts.

As a fan, I totally get the frustration of commercials. Professionally though, well they are necessary and working with production teams, leagues, and advertisers to fulfill commercial obligations...that's no easy task, let me tell you.

Still, I really don't know what Jeff Fisher is talking about (though he never actually said ESPN) because there are league officials down there with him and the networks don't tell teams to call time-outs.

I must say that espn has done a fantastic job with MNF, when Kornheiser was on there it kinda sucked but Gruden is great IMO. Tirico is getting better and better at football . I wonder who they will get next season when gruden is in Dallas?

I agree with you about commercials they are a necessary PITA. Some people just dont get the connection between commercials and the games being available for free. The alternative is no commercials and paying to watch any & every game. I bet we'd hear some real bitching if that happened.

He never really called anyone out. He just said, "they."

[quote=Terry McCormick - Co-Publisher for TitanInsider]
"Jack used his timeouts,” Fisher said. “My understanding is they needed network timeouts, and that's why Jack used his timeouts. They came over and asked me to do it, but I said, 'I was hoping to get a first down and kneel on it.'

“At the end of the game like that, you don't kick a long field goal, you don't, you hand it off.”

Fisher said he had no issues with Del Rio's handling of the matter, and said Del Rio should not have any issues with the Titans continuing to call plays.

“You can check with Jack. It didn't bother me at all. I believe that they asked them to use them. It's the first time I've heard of it,” Fisher said. “I just said I would have a hard time using them, because I'm ahead. Honestly, I have no issues with Jack or how he managed the end of that game. It's just what it was, and I don't think he would have an issue with me handing the ball off.”

:pffff:

I doubt he'd want to enter that mess. Gruden would want a job with less owner-interference.

This is why Wade Phillips is their coach NOW...no big names wanted to be Jerry's slave.

Same situation in Oakland...no coach who isn't desperate for a job will ever go there. They'll get the guys who otherwise would not be a HC candidate so they can say it's on their resume. It's not AS BAD in Dallas yet, but they're definitely not a coach-friendly job to anyone not named Parcells who is doing to run the show no matter what Jones says.

Norv Turner and Ron Rivera were available at the time Wade was hired, but they ended up with Phillips...definitely the weaker of the possibilities.

They almost pulled a Snyderatto-Zorn move and hired Garrett as OC, but promoted to HC before getting any experience.

Other candidates were Singletery (before he had any experience), Todd Haley, Tony Sparano, Jim Caldwell (was only a QB coach at the time) and Todd Bowles.

No prominent names outside of Norv Turner and maybe Rivera at the time...and Norv isn't THAT great of a HC. He'd be a better coordinator.

I just don't see Dallas attracting a big name coach like Gruden or Cowher, especially if this season continues on its' Titanic-like course. They JUST ended what, a 14-year playoff win drought? The Dallas job is looking more like the Chicago Cubs job of the NFL than a dream job.

Sure would be a bitch to have lost your fantasy game due to Johnson going over 100.

Understood that ad revenue is a necessary evil, but I just don't like how this went down. Kinda effs with the integrity of the game.

This is my bet, and by the way, didn't we have a similar conversation last year when Gruden came to town? He was the next Skins coach for sure, or something like that.

Anyway, as I see it:
Cowher will end up in Carolina
Gruden in SF
Turner in Dallas
?? in Cleveland

There's no precedent of that happening.
