Time to move up some practice squad players
The season is on the brink of disaster and it's time for Shanahan and Allen to become creative. I think it time to make some roster changes and bring up a few practice squad guys. I feel the redskins are on the outside looking in on the youth movement in the NFL and changes need to be made.
I think they should move up James Davis, Terrance Austin and sign Patrick Turner from the Jets. They should cut Joey Galloway, Roydell Williams and Chad Simpson. Although I’ve heard good things about Simpson he can never make it to the game day roster so he has to go. The others are self explanatory. We have to bring some youth and productivity to the skins. What does the forum think? Would you make changes and if so who and why? :benched: |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Its still mathematically probable to make the playoffs and your suggesting giving PS guys a look ? Maybe when the playoff formula is improbable but we also need to look at guys to see how they finish.

Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
I think Joey effing Galloway should be cut...he is a disaster. Id say bring up Davis or Austin in his spot. I wouldnt do anything too drastic outside of that...NFC is far from being wrapped up

Hey Chico its 11/10, your signature is out of date. I think it expired back in 5/10. |

(and don't make a retort based on hindsight, since no one had that luxury prior to the Pitt game). But a real GM would entertain the possibility of deliberately weakening his team so that they won't quit, but still lose, in order to get a high draft pick. |

Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Galloway has done next to nothing. I don't see any risk in cutting him and brining up Terrance Austin.

Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
When I first saw this, I thought it was just another of those 'the season is over, might as well evaluate talent' & maybe it was intended as such. However, the names & moves diehard mentions are very possible to happen. In fact, I would be surprised if we don't see James Davis moved up, there was only 1 rb on the roster mon. night!
Austin, I'm not so sure about the staff's view, but I would love to see him in, Galloway out. Cook I don't see happening, Montgomery and/or Dock is likely to play before him. Who is Patrick Turner? |

Coach has given Galloway a vote of confidence on more than one ocasion. He's said the same thing about Lichtensteiger and Stephon Heyer......No his glasses are not fogged. |

USC WR that was drafted in 2009 on the 3rd round by the Dolphins. |

I'd like to see Austin called up as well, but it sounds as though Galloway has been demoted to the bottom of the WR depth chart from what I hear, Roydell has moved up to Galloway's spot and Banks will get significant snaps. |

Don't think Austin would be good there due to his size. |

Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Funny thing is Galloway was never known for his routes to begin with, he was always more of a speed guy on go routes.
At this point he's more than proven his worthlessness here. I too would like to see Austin, or just about anyone we've got not named Galloway. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
I would put Cook up for montgomery
Cut galloway for austin cut simpson for james davis |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
I just want to see Banks run a few screens from the triple WR stack set. I am pretty sure he would break off a few.

Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
There is a rather basic reason why there are players on the practice squad and other players on the active roster.
It's not all that complex but just in case it seems mysterious let me lay it out here:
The coaches - - the ones who see these guys in practice every day and the ones that are responsible for putting the team in the best position to win on a week-to-week basis - - think the guys on the practice squad are not as good as the guys on the active roster.
Now, if it is true that there are three or four guys on the practice squad who really are better than the guys on the active roster, then you have to indict the coaching staff and the guys who do "pro player evaluations" for the team for "getting it wrong". |

There are other reasons why some players don't make it to the active squad... Draft position, contract, etc. There is no reason that Jon Beck shouldn't be a Practice squad guy, other then his draft status and contract. I think these moves would help the team move forward. not back... |

Good point. K. Williams was on the PS a while too. Shanny has made somewhat erratic decisions w/moving players on & off the PS. |

It's quit possible that the practice squad players at this point in the season are ready to play. I too would love to see Austin brought up. We could get younger rather quickly if our practice squad players can contribute. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Also, some guys can be "stashed" on the practice squad. Austin can sit on the practice squad, and unless some other team wants to take a flyer on an unproven talent, then he's basically safe. Galloway is either on the team or he isn't.
So, Austin can be on the field thru the week, train, practice etc, and at some point move up, but Galloway if cut is gone. Now at this point I think it is fair to say, well he ought to be gone, but in the early part of the season one can think that he would have given more stability to a immature receiving corps. |

Based on his time in Miami I don't believe Beck is PS eligible.
a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club's 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their "only Accrued Season(s)", he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad.
|
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Now this about Galloway:
Redskins Insider - Coaches not pleased with Joey Galloway's play Monday It's pretty dumfounding to the avg. fan; a guy that we think for weeks shouldn't be on the field, yet now over halfway through the season the coaches are finally on him (though he was demoted from #2 to 3 for AA). He must be making it on his practice habits, influence on the youngsters, etc. |
This is one of the biggest reasons young players stay on the practice squad for a full season. Coaches want to groom them, get them trained on the playbook, prepare them for the following season, all the while keeping them on the team. It is not uncommon around the NFL for a player to spend a full year on the practice squad, then compete for, and win, a roster spot the following preseason. It is a great tool to develop young players into the scheme you run. |

We should have kept Bobby Wade over Galloway in my humble opinion, not that he would have been a savior either |

Yeah I'd really like to see Austin. One thing we lack on this team is speed, aside from Banks. Let's try to get these two on the field on offense. Couldn't be any worse than having Galloway out there. I know Banks is tiny and fumbling is a concern, but a guy with speed like that, we've got try to find ways to get him the ball other than special teams. |

True, but even in our wins the passing game hasn't looked good overall. There have been bright spots, but not an overall good game other than the Houston loss. And Galloway has been a part of that. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
As little of production as the Skins are getting out of Galloway AND R.Williams, I'd say cut both and bring up whatever WR's we have on the PS.
What troubles me most is at any other position if someone is not producing they are benched, ie; McNabb, Haynesworth, RB's that have come and gone. But Galloway who produces so little is allowed to suit up week in and week out. How about treating Galloway like one of the other WR's or RB's that have come and gone and cut him. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
James Davis
Terrance Austin that's IT ! .. don't get crazy .. we are 4-5 .. let's see what happens this week .. 5-5 your telling me we are done ? 4-6 doesn't even mean your done |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Promoting Brandon Banks and Ryan Torain from the practice squad worked out well. I want to see Austin and Davis promoted next. If we continue to freefall in the standings, Shanny may as well promote Capers and Cook to see whether they are good fits for his zone blocking scheme.
|
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Patrick Turner just got promoted to the Jets active roster. There is really no excuse for Galloway being on our active roster, none at all.

Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Let me try to explain this differently:
If the coaches truly believe that there are players on the practice squad who are better than players on the active squad, there is really not a lot of incentive for the coaches to keep the practice squad players where they are. Coaches live and die by the team's record. Coaches on teams that win 10-12 games every year rarely get fired; coaches on teams that lose 10-12 games every year usually get fired. Therefore, keeping "superior players" on the practice squad and keeping "inferior players" on the field works against the coaches' best interests. The players you pine for to be on the active roster will get there as soon as the coaches believe they are better players than the ones on the active roster. As of last Monday night, the coaches did not believe that to be the case. |

I'm not saying we know more then the coaches, far from it, but I see this reasoning often. If coaches were always right they wouldn't get fired nearly as often as they do today. In fact one of the more common reasons as to why coaches get fired is misuse of personnel. They're human, they make mistakes. It's more then possible that a guy like Austin deserves to be on the roster more then Galloway, yet some other factor besides talent could be serving as the difference between who's active and whos on the squad. In this case I think that Shanahan has simply wanted to make sure theres a veteran presence in the receiving corps. However after Mondays performance that could all be nothing more then a moot point. Personally I'd like to find out if Austin can play. I don't want the team to have to look into wasting another early draft pick on what might be the second hardest position to project at the NFL level. Wide Receiver. |
