Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Yes, after 30+ years of being a Redskins fan, yours truly is finally getting to go to his first Redskins game. I certainly wished it was under better circumstances, but nevertheless, I'm sure it will be fun. My girlfriend got us tickets for the Redskins/Giants game on the 2nd of January. They are a Christmas/anniversary gift.
Who all will be going to the final game? What is your overall impression of going to a Redskins game? |

If you're gonna get liquored up, do it before the game, unless you like buying 8 dollar beers. Idk if you're one of those guys that likes to act the drunken fool (in your defense it doesn't seem like it, but i don't know you personally) but if you like to drink, the average price for a beer is 8 bucks I think (don't know for certain because I don't drink at the games) 2. You might wanna eat before the game too, unless you want to spend almost 20 bucks buying a cheap burger/fries/drink. In their defense, I do like the burgers they sell at the Johnny Rockets in the stadium. 3. Don't think cheap. 4. It's probably gonna be cold as hell, so dress warmly. 5. If you got tickets in the 200 level, somewhere around either the 15th or 25th (not sure what it is) row or further back, you got what we like to call "limited view" seating, meaning there are pillars there supporting the upper deck that will block your view at occasional points in the game. You can still use them and if the game has plenty of empty seats (it might happen, simply because it's end of season, we always get our asses kicked by the giants, there's nothing left to play for, and it will be cold) you might be able to move down to get a better view as long as the ushers don't catch you and ask to see your ticket. 6. With all that negativity out of the way, going to a Skins game can be a fun time win or lose. I just went to the Tampa Bay game and even though it was cold as hell and pouring rain, me and my friends had a pretty good time just seeing the skins play. If you and your woman are having an unpleasant time due to assholes/drunk guys/whoever, there's a number you can text to to get that person removed from the game, and you can see it on the box at the top level of the stadium and they'll occasionally flash it on the scoreboards. And the HD videoboards are very nice too, be glad you weren't going in previous years because it definitely adds to the experience. Where I was sitting against Tampa Bay when the Skins were all the way on the other side of the field I practically had to rely on the video boards to know what was going on because it was hard to see from one end of the field. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Traffic around FedEX is ass. Arrive early if driving, and plan from a long trip back.

We are planning on tailgating beforehand, so I'm sure we won't be buying any of the food and drink at the stadium. When I went to see the Panthers play a couple of years back, one beer (in the bottle) was like $6, so yeah, I won't be spending money on that. Plus, I'm not the type that gets all liquored up at games. I always have a phobia of tripping over somebody's feet or falling down the steps (lol) even sober, so I like to have my senses well intact so that I can enjoy the game and not get hurt or embarrassed...lol! We are sitting somewhere in the 400's, around the 30-40 yard line on the "home side", upper deck. My girlfriend's D.C. friends told us exactly what you said about the 200 level seats and that the 400 level seats are actually pretty good seats. All I know is that I don't want to ever get endzone seats if I go back to a football game, because like you said, Mooby, you have to rely on the jumbo tron to see what's going on. I had that experience in Charlotte. How early do they start selling tickets for the next season? |

Luckily we're both riding with her friends. I'm sure we'll probably be arriving there early. We're also staying with her friends in D.C. until the next day, so we won't be in too much of a hurry. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Yep, go early, stay late, eat and drink during the tailgate, have fun, and don't be in a hurry. Take your time.
I went to 2 games this year. At the Packers game, we had the AAA Fan Tailgate passes, so we didn't tailgate and then hung out in the club level after the game for 2 hours until the traffic died down. At the Vikings game, we tailgated before and after. We left the parking lot around 5:45pm and it took us 5 minutes to get out onto Landover Road and over to the BW Parkway and up to the Beltway and about an hour to get back to Germantown to pick up the kids, which is normally a 30-45 minute ride. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
The first Redskins game I ever saw was in Texas Stadium(I used to live in Arlington), it was in fact the Brunell/Moss comeback win. However I got so drunk before the game that I wandered out of the stadium in the 4th quarter to avoid all the Cowboy A-holes (at least I think this was my reasoning, in my early 20's I often did unexplainable things!) and I missed one of the greatest comebacks of all time. The next day I implemented a 0 tolerance policy for me drinking at Redskins games. Two years ago when I was living in Richmond VA I saw 4 home games 100% sober and had a far better time. Now I live in Rochester NY and have to go to a bar to watch them most weekends......I swear I had a point when I started this post, I just lost it somewhere in the middle!

The game should be empty so you could probably get into some better seats, provided the ushers are cool. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Also make sure you dont have a backpack or your gf and her friends dont bring big purses, the stadium security will either try to confiscate them or make you them back to the car. I had to walk my gf designer purse back to the car before the Cowboy/Skins game earlier this year, and its was not fun.

Lots of other good advice in this thread too, since you're driving get there early and stay late. One good thing about it being the last home game of the season is that attendance will still probably be down so mayyyybe traffic won't be that bad, but if the game is pretty well attended you're in for a rough time getting out after the game. And heed Stacks' advice about the bags/backpacks/purses lol, I knew a guy who took a backpack to a Skins game like last season and he had to take the Metro back to some station near Vienna because they told him he couldn't bring it in. And you can def. try to sneak down to the lower bowl seats if the right opportunity presents itself, no need to watch the game from the nosebleeds if there are better seats available. Just be smart about how you do it. Other than that have fun. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
I will be going to the game. It will be my first game in FedEx in 11 years. I just hope the Redskins stick it to the giants and end the season on a high note.
|
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
This game will also be my first Redskins Game and I come from Paris, France to see it !
I just can't wait this moment ! |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
I definitely second all of the advice above, especially mooby's advice on drinking and eating in the parking lot beforehand.
Something new I learned last time, was to basically just offer drinks/food to anyone who parks near you. EVERYONE reciprocates and it just makes it an even more fun situation. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Just stay clear of the DTC and the thousands of other drunk fans who are incapacitated to the point where they can't follow whats going on (which obviously defeats the purpose of spending $100's of dollars to attend a game).
Personally I have more fun attending basketball, baseball, and hockey games as the arenas and stadiums are usually much more accessible. Plus the drinking culture isn't nearly as bad with those sports as it is with football. I guess the large amount of downtime on the weekend gives people the chance to build up enough liquid courage before games. Unlike the other big 3 sports which have numerous weekday games that require people to go right after work. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Thanks guys! We will be actually riding with some people who live in D.C. who are going to the game, so all my girlfriend and I have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. Her friends that we are staying with go to the games on a regular basis, so I'm sure they'll probably be telling us the same thing you guys are telling me.
This might be a stretch, but is it possible to meet any of the players after the game? Coaching staff? |

This is good advise. If you get to the stadium 2 hours or sooner before the game then you will not have trafic issues. If you tailgate a couple hours after the game then the trafic leaving is no big deal. |

I'm definitely up for staying and doing some more tailgating after the game. It's not like I have to head home after the game anyways. |

I used to park semi-close to them and it was funny for about 10 minutes. They're kind of like people who blast their music when they're driving... About 1% of people are like, "WOW, THOSE GUYS ARE AWESOME!" The other 99% are like, "What a bunch of douchebags." Their tailgate gets around 20-30 and they have got to be the most obnoxious bunch out there. There's plenty of people drinking all over the parking lot, but the maybe 4-5 times we parked near them, we saw a fight or saw someone puking. |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
I just went to my first game against Tampa. Get there early, and dress warm if your going to tailgate. I had a parking pass, but my brother didn't so he parked at the shopping center up the street. It didn't cost anything and it's pretty close. If you smoke, prepare to walk each time you want one. Watch out for the drunks, almost had to pull some people out of their car windows.....
|
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
I agree with the dress warm advice. I went to my first game in DC this year when they played against the Vikings. The sun was out and it was in the 40s but I was still shivering a little.

Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Enjoy!
Not the best 1st game to go to seeing this is the game where we secure the playoffs for the Giants corect!?? LOL *hides under desk* |

Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
You will have a great time, the best part of the whole experience is the tailgating. I hope they win so your first game can be a positive experience.

Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
I've only gone to one game. That was 3 years ago. Best time ever. But with young Kids it's hard to get away. You will have a blast. Just go with the flow and don't expect too much out of the experience. If there is any reason you don't enjoy yourself it will be because of the weather.
After 11 years on the Season Ticket waiting list my turn has finally come to purchase tickets. I will be doing so this year. I also will probably sell most if not all of them. I figure if it took me 11 years to get the chance. There must be someone out there that will enjoy my season tickets and give me the opportunity to make a little extra cash next year. I am very excited about the opportunity and hope you have a great time at the game |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
Well folks, I enjoyed my first ever Redskins game (although they could have won!) I had great seats except for the fact that I was sitting at the steps where people kept going in and out, but still, awesome seats!
I saw one fight, which was right in front of the stadium in front of the cops...lol! Stupids! The tailgating was freakin' awesome! My girlfriend's friend made the BEST steak I have ever had in my entire life! He also made some pasta dish as well. I was so happy it had stopped raining by the time the game had started. As soon as I get some pictures back from my girlfriend, I will post them. However, I really didn't want to take many pictures, because it was so cold and all that was on my mind was getting back into a warm car after the game....lol! Now as far as the stadium.....eh......it's alright. Actually (and don't hate me for saying this) I think the Panther's stadium is a lot better looking. Smaller, but much better looking. If it's true that the Redskins are playing the Panthers next year, I'll definitely try to get tickets (because they should be in Charlotte.) That's only about two hours away from me! I will definitely want to go back to another game at Fedex though. Maybe either a preseason game or a game in the first half of the season.....when it's still warm....lol! |
Re: Skinsguy going to his first Redskins Game!
I will be going to my first Redskins game next year in 2011. I have been to plenty of Redskins games in the old Texas Staduim. Going to my first in FedEX Field ever. In the planning stages and I have a question I am flying in from San Antonio and my two choices are Baltimore or Dulles Airports for some reason Baltimore is cheaper is there a big difference?? Would apprecieate some info. And if anyone is selling tickets for the Dallas game since the person that I am going is a Dallas fan. Told him to come with me so that way he can see all the shit that I had to put up with for the 10+ games that I went to in Texas Staduim!!!!

I would fly into BWI since it's closer, but if you truly wanted close go to Reagan, but it seems you don't have that option. Dulles is way out in Virginia but like I said it doesn't matter unless you are planning on a taxi ride from airport to hotel or something. And there's a reason Fedex is considered one of the worst stadiums in the NFL. There's not a bad seat in the house unless you bought an obstructed view ticket, but there are not a lot of fan amenities in there. And as has been mentioned nothing's cheap at Fedex, not the parking, beer, food, tickets (unless you wait until the Redskins are eliminated from playoff contention and they're not playing the Eagles/Cowboys/Giants/any other hot team in the NFL like possibly the Patriots next year.) |
