Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

I wonder how this will play out. I'd love to have him back for another year or two.

I would be surprised if he leaves, he really likes our offense plus the market for him won't be that big IMO..

I'm not sure how this is new news? I thought this was kind of known already.

He wants to come back, and I think he will for one year

I didn't know, however I'll be the first to admit that I've been working so much the past few months, I haven't been paying a lot of attention to the Redskins or any other team for that matter.

The Skins should thank him for his service and wish him well. He disappears in the red zone because he's too small, and he has too many drive killing drops. The Skins need to look elsewhere.

Your right, it really shouldn't be. I think we had a thread about players who would become FA's and who we should re-sign and if I'm not mistaken Moss was on it.

I came here thinking the team already announced they were not re-signing Moss and that they were going to let him go when I read the "Santana's contract to void; will become free agent."

Personally I think he's still efficiant but his roll needs to change.

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

I love Moss. He's provided, IMO some of hte best moments we've had as a fan base in the last 6 years....

That being said, by the time we're good enough to compete again, Idk if he'll be on the team or not, so if he's gone, I guess I wont really mind that much. I feel like we need a new "core" from (portis, moss, ect) to guys like orakpo, t.williams... so if he's gone, he's gone...but I would like to have him finish as a Skin', i'm a huge tanta' fan.

Im betting he will be gone. He is st the twilight of his career and he probably wants to play for a championship caliber team.

According to JLC, so of course this means the Skins will probably re-sign him :)

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

I know I am in the minority on this but I really don't care if he comes back. I can live with it if he gets a 1 year deal, but in general I am done with this group of veteran players we have that have never won anything. Santana can still play but I prefer a complete overhaul of this roster.

Monkeydad 02-07-2011 10:56 AM

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

We definitely need him. He and Armstrong are a great #1 and 2. We finally used Moss the way he should be last season and he could still be productive a couple of more years, at least one more for sure.

I hope he comes back with a 1-year deal at least, if not 2.

If he leaves, we'll need to draft a WR, which doesn't work out more times than it does...and it takes away from addressing the O-line, a more pressing issue.

freddyg12 02-07-2011 11:10 AM

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

Sign him to a 3 year deal w/an option on the 3rd, that would give him some security in the short term & incentive in the long-term. He keeps himself in good shape & was surprisingly durable last year.

I understand why some are wanting him to go but I think finding good wr's who are team players is really hard to do. Sure, they need to draft some wr's in the next couple years, but Moss can still make plays.

Exactly how I feel.........I'm just done with some of these vets. I will always love Moss. Especially because of that Monday night game vs Dallas in 05'...That was truly one of my favorite memories as a Skins fan. Anyway, if he comes back next year fine if not good luck my man. I wouldnt mind Sims-Walker in a Skins uni....

Big shot wins the Warpath playoff pool, and suddenly he thinks he can tell us all how the team should be run...

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

We definetly need to keep Santana, he has been one of the only positives this team has had for the last few years. Plus if we don't we will have to get two new receivers. I can just imagine the excuses we will start hearing if we don't win a game "well the receivers are new and don't know the routes yet". I would perfer to keep the excuses to a minimum this year please.
I think they should let Santana go, let him catch on with a team that has a chance to contend.
Ouch. The truth hurts. I think I like enough of what I see from Armstrong and perhaps Austin but, more talent is needed. For the right contract, bring him back.

Monkeydad 02-07-2011 11:50 AM

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

The self-proclaimed experts are saying the Raiders would be a possible landing spot for Santana, with Al Saunders and Jason Campbell there. That would be weird to watch.

I don't think we can or will let him walk, our WR depth chart would be empty past Armstrong. Are we REALLY that confident in Terrence Austin and Malcolm Kelly? I'm definitely not.

I said yes, particularly with no "meh" option. But it should be a "reasonable" contract and let him test the market if he wants.

No we won't. By the time we're good, he's going to be too old. Let the guy go, he deserves to catch on with a winner, not a rebuilding project.

I would go as far to say that I'm not sure that he'll want to return. He's getting up there in age and wants to win. He's made alot of money. He's really been a great Redskin but I can't say as I blame him if he wants to go to a contending team.

I'm not sure I'd bring him back if I was the Skins anyway. As mentioned, we're not going to be good enough to contend next year, so why sign him to a contract? Let him go to a contending team. Let us get the young guys on the field to rebuild. Let's see what we got even if it's not much.

If we let all our good players go so they can play for a team that can contend then how will we ever contend?

GTripp0012 02-07-2011 01:13 PM

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

The only news here is that once Moss' contract voids, he'll be able to sign with any team under the current CBA prior to the impending lockout on March 4. So Santana can pocket a signing bonus even if they lock him out, which will be good insurance for him against not getting any game checks at the beginning of next season.

He has plenty of quickness to be our Wes Welker slot receiver in this offense for at least a couple more years. I hope we re-sign Moss before the lockout.

SM is about 32 years old. He'll command decent money on the FA market. Our team needs rebuilding that's going to take a couple/few years to retool. Do we want to sign a guy to a 3 year contract who's 32 years old? I'm not saying it would be the worst thing in the world but I think this is a time to get the young guys in.

Someonen mentioned Orakpo. It's different. Orakpo is young and under contract.

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

Even on a rebuilding team there's room for vets. Moss is still a productive player.

Re: Santana's contract to void; will become free agent

Another team who might make a run at him is the Jets.

Holmes and Edwards are both FAs and probably looking for a big payday. They likely will lose one of them.
