Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Redskins Insider - Clinton Portis talks about moving on
"With a guy with a high salary cap, I've always dealt with it a little differently," Shanahan explained. "If we're not going to sign Clinton to that high salary, I'll let him test the market out. Not to say we don't want him, but for a lower price, and obviously we'll try to find the best deal. It could happen. I don't want to say right now. If I said that, usually I'm being pretty honest with you. Could be two days from now, could be three days from now." |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Portis will at least be afforded an option. Finishing his last two seasons on IR will not bode well in any negotiations with another team. Whether he'll be willing to return at a reduced rate may well depend on the value of any offers he may receive elsewhere.
If he intends to play in 2011, and the Redskins will have him back, he may find whatever offer they make to be his best. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I hope he gets a better offer and leaves...time to turn the page.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Portis had a very good tenure in DC, one of my favorite redskins.. It's time to move on though thanks for the bad ass blocks in the backfield!

ESPN is saying he may be gone as early as tomorrow.
I hope they are right, we dont need a clown that can block. We need a running back. Sources: Washington Redskins expected to cut ties with RB Clinton Portis - ESPN |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Hearing from a lot of sites that its all but a done deal that Portis is released tomorrow.
I know i've kind of hated on him in the past, but honest i'm neutral about it this time. We know that this has been a long time coming. Portis has played alot of football, and his body just isnt up to the task anymore. I'm fairly certain that he will find a new home as a backup RB, but hopefully nothing more. Portis' mind tells him he can start, but his body and the rest of the NFL know that's not the case. I personally think they should have moved on from him after 2009, but I understood the salary cap ramifications and everything else. Good luck Clinton. The Redskins need fresh legs at RB, and this is definatley best for the team. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Portis will be missed.
You guys act like we have good durable backs. Torain and whatever other trash ain't going to cut it. 6-10, here we come. |

We need help all over the defense, our O-line has one high level player, our QB is going to be Rex Grossman (or some unnamed rookie), and our receiving corps is the worst in football. I think we'll get by just fine with Torain/Williams/whoever else. All that said, I'll miss CP. He was a very good Redskin and really laid it on the line for us on Sundays. All the best, 26. |

Portis has had far more injuries than Torain if you were to compare careers. Not even close. Besides, injuries are one thing, hits and total mileage are another. CP is pretty close to being done as he's handled a pretty big load over the course of his career (nearly 2500 touches). Torain is 24 and just getting started. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I love Torain, I really do, I just don't think he will last a whole season with the way he runs. His backups will have to play big and I doubt they will be capable. We were 30th in rushing this past season and it wasn't all due to offensive performance. This team will be a joke next year, guaranteed.
I would rather keep Portis and do what the Jets did this past season. |

You do realize we still have the draft and free agency to improve the talent on the team, right? |

Oh, we might be able to get one starter from the draft, if we are lucky maybe two...what free agents do you think we could get that would make this team better? |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I would not be surprised if we bring Portis back later at a cheaper price.

LOL, he doesn't have much time to waste. He's going to sign with a good team where he will have a chance to win games and maybe a SB. I don't think it's about the money with Portis anymore. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I'm really curious if the current (notable) free agents: Sanders, Shockey, Atogwe, and now Portis, will sign with any team any time soon. I think all of them have some type of durability concern, yet could help a team. However, with the CBA uncertainty, I wonder if any team would be willing to guaranteed any money to these guys.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I would highly doubt if we bring him back. I believe he might want a fresh start somewhere else too.

With all the holes we have there's bound to be plenty of upgrades out there in what should be a deep FA market. |

Only 4 times in his pro career as Clinton Portis ever started 16 games. 3 of those times he's been with us. The other years here he has suffered major injuries and missed multiple games. He's had 7 seasons here, and 3 of them have ended in injured reserve. We'd probably feel different if CP was just getting dinged up with minor things, but each time he goes down its major. Another thing I'm surprised that nobody is talking about, was the fact that the severe concussion CP suffered in 2009 nearly ended his career. There is no use linking articles, as there are many articles explaining how Portis had one heck of a time getting cleared to finally go back to light workouts, and he also did a few interviews where he certainly sounded like a player who was done. Portis i think defied the odds after coming back from that major concussion in 2009. Many felt that he should not have tried to comeback (a la Brian Westbrook) and risk his long-term health, but he lasted only a few games before going out on IR again. Portis has to look hard in the mirror i think and decide what is important to him. If he is ok risking his long term health for maybe 1 more season of football, then nobody can stop him. Its his right. But he could very well decide to retire with his health and legacy intact and nobody would fault him. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
For what its worth, Portis is apparantly telling some of his twitter followers that he has been informed that he will be released, possibly before the day is over.

Exactly. I think it's time for the Redskins to move on, and it's time for CP to move on. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I'm a huge CP fan, this man carried this offense on his shoulders for years. He has been a premier back and a household name. With that said it is time for him to call it a career, as Bob Hope used to say "thanks for the memories". HTTR Mr Portis!

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Well I'll certainly miss Clinton. No doubt about it, I loved what the guy did here, specifically in 2005, 2007 and the first half of 2008. When he was good, the Redskins were pretty good. Thanks for the memories CP, but I agree with most others that it is time to move on. The guy had a heck of a career here, imo, I would have liked to see him break the rushing record (Riggo was before my time), but it is what it is. Best of luck to him.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
It is a shame it has come to this. The guy was one of the best Skins of the post Gibbs I/ title era, but he is a used up commodity in DC with a questionable line still. His departure also puts another wrinkle with our first round pick. Do we actually go RB in the first round? I know Portis had to go, but now we are in need of two key components in our offensive backfield, a QB and RB. I like Torain and Williams as a tandem, but not sure they can carry the load as a feature back if the other one gets hurt.

Im not a fan of this years RB draft selection. I am also not a fan of KW. I dont value him if it is based on his pass catching ability like Coach used him for in situations. Torrain would be a nice spell back if we can find a primary back -hes better at that than KW. It be great if CP would stick around 1 more year at least- granted he would have to take a humungous pay cut and sign something low like $1 mill a year. I'd hate if he thought he could go to NE and get a taste of winning. But CP and torrain could be functionable but having said that, both are injury prone. Riggins record could be broken but we know diesel will always be our GOAT. The main thing about having so much vacancy for talent I think is we could lure some good talent to try out and practice squad b/c opportunity is here. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Great football player when he was young and healthy.
He deserves to go to a really good team that needs a solid veteran backup due to the fact that he still has a talent that many NFL running backs just don't have. The man can block. It's a unique quality for a RB nowadays. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I remember his first run as a skin against TB but other then that I cannot really remember any of his runs that you just say "WOW". I can remember some great blocks and some nice runs but nothing with the wow factor. I do remember him stumbling over his own two feet when he had a wide open hole. I love CP but its not like he was lighting up the field.

gmanc711 Riggo was before your time? Larry Brown was not even before my time.Lucky you.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
From CP's comments, he sounds as if he's sure he's done here. That may be because he thinks he'll get signed elsewhere. If he can't get much out there, which is likely scenario, it would make sense for him to stay in DC as a backup/3rd down back. Ordinarily I would say there's a slim chance of that, but Shanahan being here increases that possibility IMO.
I think it will be a very humbling market for CP. Even if he's signed elsewhere, will he be able to make the team? I wouldn't be too surprised if he's played his last nfl down, though I think he's got value in pass pro. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Portis right now reminds me alot of former boxers that i know, who can obviously keep in shape, and mentally they tell themselves that they can still fight. How many times have you heard guys say "I feel like I'm still 25", or "I'm in the best shape of my life"?
The fact is is that while they are still in shape, most of their skills have eroded, and they might still show you flashes of what they once were, but the reality is that their career is over. Portis is a fine athlete, who is in shape, and mentally he tells himself that he can still go. It is a sad day because the athlete's mentality tells him that he can still play. The truth is, if he does indeed make a squad somewhere, how long until he is injured again? I think he may have 1 season left, if he can stay healthy and used in an extremely limited role.. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
CP departure would be a positive for the Skins. If it is the end of the run with the Skins, I say, Good luck CP and thank you.

I don't see it so much as him not being able to stay healthy, he may stay relatively healthy if he's a reserve. But after another year, will he still be as good w/his blocking? If not, no team will be willing to keep him. His time as a runner is pretty much done. |

.....TOTALLY, If Vinny were still at the Helm CP is holding a News Conference Via Twitter announcing his new 88 million dollar 4 year deal while displaying his 42 million dollar signing bonus check. This is howe the "Get better...Get younger" deal works. CP has talent...Y CP can still play......Y CP is still worth multiple mill.....N Get serious and come to a reasonable amount to play for....AND down the road we go! |
