Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

From most the information coming from draft pundits following the combine, this draft is absolutely loaded with defensive talent. Let me begin by saying that an edge rusher, opposite Orakpo in our new 3-4 is arguably our paramount need in this draft (We all know we have several positions of need). For the sake of discussion, lets consider the slight possibilty that the top edge rushers (Quinn, Bowers, Miller) and defensive tackles (Dareus, Fairley) may be snatched by up by teams ahead of us. If by chance this scenario happens, this may be our opportunity to grab our #1 reciever for years to come...A.J. Green or Julio Jones.

Julio Jones is an absolute physical freak and extremely tough competitor (based on his results at the combine and knowing that he put those numbers up on a broken foot). He is physically imposing and is a devastating blocker in the game. Very solid in YAC and tough to tackle in the open field.

A.J. Green on the other hand, is such a naturally gifted pass catcher. He catches everything thrown his way, runs crisp routes and gets consistent separation from defenders. His ability to go "up" for the ball is unmatched, not to mention, his knack for the spectacular catch.

If we went WR at #10, Who do you think we should take, Jones or Green, and why?

Green just seems safer. He looks like a gazelle when he plays, so graceful. Football just seems so natural to him. Jones might be the better athlete with more upside, but Green seems like the better natural football player.
I'm sure some player exists out there that had a pre-draft injury that signified how tough they were by playing through it in college or the combine, but I've just never seen it. Mike Crabtree, Justin Harell, Jonathan Stewart are the three players that come to mind. Harrell has been injured his whole career, and Crabtree and Stewart have been good but not great. Playing through an injury in college might or might not be crippling, but there doesn't seem to be any upside.

I went to YouTube to settle the question you posed in order to get a feel for the two WRs.

First, both of them are hard-nosed WRs and have no apparent fear of catching the ball in traffic. This is important in the NFL. Grade them even.

Secondly, they both have an appreciated love for the game and their respective abilities to make fantastic plays. Slight edge to A.J. Green.

Thirdly, if I had to pick one of them to hopefully compliment Kelly (fingers crossed), I would pick A.J. Green. He will bring out the best from the other receivers on our team. Both are physical, so that negates Julio Jones' strong point.

All of that being said, I like A.J. Green.

Julio Jones will be an elite WR in the NFL. Id take Jones without hesitation.

Depends on who's the QB throwing to them.

I'm just not so sold on first round WRs I'd rather go LB DE OL QB ahead of WR

I think the WR class is much safer than the qb class. Green or Jones>all the qbs.

Green. "Natural" WRs don't come around often.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

Because this draft is "loaded with defensive talent", I expect Green and Jones to be drafted early.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

WRs are risky, but a great WR can transform an offense and dictate how defenses approach our defense. This is an offensive league, time to start building an offense.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

The Redskins recently drafted a wide receiver who came to the team "pre-injured". Malcom Kelly has basically done "squah-doosh" for the team in his three years as a Redskin.

I know that injuries heal and I know that every player suffers injuries each and every season. Nonetheless, if I had the option to take either one, I'd take the uninjured one because both of them look awfully good on the field.

Green, he's your randy moss in his youth. Jones is your larry fitzgerald.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

Jones gets the slight edge. Taller, faster, stronger than Green. A T.O w/o the headache. The kid ran a 4.38 40 on a bum foot. Green is a deep threat that'll get the ball but isn't built or doesn't seem willing to go over the middle and take a hit.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

I think both look like top tier guys. Possible pro-bowl talent. I tend to like Jones a tiny bit more but givn the injury I'd go Green between the both of them. I think both are in the top 5 in talent in the draft. I like both both better than any QB/RB/OL. But we REALLY need to find some OL talent somehow.

I think Jones-Fitz is a decent comparison. I see AJ Green as more like a Reggie Wayne-type. Either way anyone who drafts either of these guys will be happy.

Yeah on draft day BUT both of these guys are not sure things.. Again 1st round WRs are very sketchy. As for Jones, I see him more of a faster Boldin and Green as a Brandon Marshall type.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

I would pick Green because Jones has lapses in concetration while catching the ball that Green did not.

All those measurables don't mean squat if you can't catch the ball when your open.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

To quote Bill Walsh, "Only pick a WR when all other positions have been solidified."

That said, I think neither will be there at 10, and if they are, trade down.

celts32 03-12-2011 03:42 PM

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

If I am absolutely forced to take a WR...I would take Green. Before the combine there was very little doubt that Green was the top WR based on what both players put on tape during the season. The combine seemed to vault Jones ahead of Green and I just don't believe the combine drills should count more then the college career.

skinster 03-12-2011 04:58 PM

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

Deffff green. Jones might have higher measurables, but Green's fluidity on the field can't be matched by Jones. Jones might be a better track athelet, but Green was made to play football. It comes with such ease to him. Body control is more important than speed when running routes.

Re: Debate: Julio Jones or A.J. Green?

I have A.J. Green as a top ten pick and I have Julio Jones as a second rounder.

Jones has raised his stock a LOT in the past year, and the combine was the culmination was that. Prior to the 2010 season, Jones looked for the world like perhaps a fourth rounder who would have to stay at Alabama through 2011 to raise his stock. I'd be careful to say he's ascended into top 10 consideration, even with his bat-crazy combine performance. Still like him in the second round way more than the first, but he's definitely on the rise, and can be really productive if paired with a stud no. 1 such as Roddy White.

One of these players has risk. The other doesn't.

I hope they are both gone by #10.

Not with the #10 overrall pick in this draft we dont. We need guards and centers. We would not use a top 10 pick on either of those positions. We are GARBAGE. With the 10th pick, we have to pick an impact player for a position of need. Whoever Shanahan has rated highest on his board (for position of need) once our pick comes around, that's who we need to pick. Whether it's a QB, WR, DE, DT, OR LB.

If we dont like who's available at point, and if the right opportunity presents itself, trade down and acquire more pick. I'd LOVE if we can pick up one of the stud centers in this draft with our 2nd round pick.

The NFL Mock Draft Database at DC Pro Sports Report, which crunches the results of various mock drafts around the web, has the Redskins picking Alabama WR Julio Jones with the tenth pick. Of the 59 mocks they surveyed, 29 have Jones going to Washington at number ten.
