Starting pitching and defense... once the new guys start hitting in the middle of the lineup, the O's are going to be even deadlier. The bullpen is still a bit iffy, imo... not sold on Gregg yet either.

The Fighting Showalters I tell ya.

In all honesty, our starting pitching isn't going to be giving us 6+ IP all season, and our bullpen is suspect for sure. But I love our young arms in Matusz, Arrieta, Britton.

No one on our offense jumps off the page to me, but they are very solid top to bottom. I think Adam Jones could really build on his all-star season last year and kick it into beast mode for this team both in center field and at the plate.

Color me tickled that we've got baseball back (until June at least, which is when the Orioles' season seems to end every year).

Actually at this rate I'm seriously trying to figure out who will win a championship first. The Caps or the O's.....make sure SCP doesn't see this post.

By the way are we all Oriole fans here or do we have a couple of people who have the Nationals as their top team. Me personally I love the O's above all but also pull for the Braves and Nationals (Kind of weird rooting for two teams in the same division but I've been rooting for the Braves since 92 when I was still living in Maryland).

Respect the O's and their history and their seemingly bright future

But I'm a Nats fan. I grew up rooting for the Expos (not really sure why) so it helped when they moved to DC

They're stacked.

Last year they had a great young pitching staff and I thought one the best OF in baseball on paper with Markakis, Jones and Scott/Pie.

Now their infield is hugely upgraded with Reynolds-Hardy-Roberts-D.Lee with Weiters behind the plate and Vlad Guerrero at DH. They're seriously solid at every position in the batting order.

Kevin Gregg is a better closer than they've had since Chris Ray was healthy early in his career, before the fall.

Boston has an older, injury-prone staff with Beckett, Lackey and Dice-K. Papelbon looks like trash and Jenks surely won't be a solid closer (I'm a White Sox fan who suffered through him in the last couple of years). Their sluggers are getting really old (Youk/Ortiz/Varitek...)

I really think the Orioles will be contending for a Wild Card. I knew they had a bright future, but this offseason, they actually spent money and filled roster holes...that's just not Orioles baseball in the past decade. Good to see an actual focus on the team for once.

I am a life long Red Sox fan but since 2004 I have been on the down low about my fanhood for them due to all the douche bags that have jumped on board the bandwagon.

I do also like the O's and hope they are the next Tampa of the AL East.

Monkeydad 04-06-2011 11:30 AM

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread

Tampa is done. They've started their roster salary dump and should finish it up in the next year or two...they'll be like the Marlins...win and gut the team. I expect Upton to be gone next year, possibly Price and/or Shields.

Plus, Longoria is hurt now. They have no bats left. They have a total of 3 team Home Runs so far...1 by Upton, 1 by Sean Rodriguez and 1 by Zobrist. Damon and Manny are going to be a disaster...they're both done.

The Nationals, despite their many MANY flaws are my baseball team. My dad and I have been to every home opener since they moved here and I'm one of the 26 people who regularly watches them on TV.
I think they're coming around and they could be pretty good in a few years but unfortunately last night they looked like the same old Nats.

As for the Orioles - I grew up liking the O's mainly because they were the closest team around, and how can anyone not like Cal? I still root for them (unless they're playing Washington) and I'm glad they're off to a good start.

Phillies for me. Orioles are my second fav though, if I had to name a 2nd fav.

I got my Redskin fandom from my father who was a fanatic; I was born in Alexandria but moved to Philly when I was 4. I was raised by a Redskin fanatic and the rest is history. As for baseball though, with no team in DC at the time we were weakly attached to the Orioles. But without that strong fatherly influence on the baseball side my surroundings took over and I became "one of them". A Philadelphia fan.

Thank heavens my dad saved me on the side that matters most, football.

But yeah, I dig seeing the O's do well. Don't like the Nats at all though.

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread

I'm an O's fan by nature, but root for the Nats as well.

I'm loving what Showalter has done for the O's. He and MacPhail have done a great job retooling the roster for a run this year. That lineup, when on, could go hit for hit with anyone in the Majors. Hopefully the young arms give them the innings they need, and that they can get a #1 before the trade deadline, instead of trading players away and packing it in.

The Nationals have a solid roster as well, but just are still a bit green. Once these guys get a few weeks under their belts, we'll see what they're made of.

Oh well, Orioles game looks like a bust tonight but at least the Caps won and the Heat are possibly going to end up loosing to Milwaukee. Decent night. Also I get to celebrate the fact that there's no more college basketball games.

I could never root for Boston. Their fans ruin the team for me.

I'm a White Sox fan and found myself rooting for the rival Indians when watching them play the Red Sox last night...that's how much I dislike them.

They're seriously like my Dallas Cowboys of baseball. Sure, my wife is from NY and is a Yanks fan, but aside from that, Boston fans....ugh. I went to an Orioles and Yankees game in Baltimore (I live close to it) and Boston fans...whole families of them dressed in pink Red Sox crap with giant cardboard syringes showed up just to be obnoxious and boo the Yanks.

They were also there for a White Sox-Orioles game I went to. Why?

I could never spend money to travel and go to a game that my team is not playing in just for the sole reason to protest and harass someone. I don't get it.

They're like a swarm of mosquitos that won't go away and always annoy you. (no offense mredskins, but I bet you can agree with me on some of your team's fans)

Lol, I never really understood the concept of rooting for a team because their in your division or conference. I mean I can see liking certain players and rooting for them to do well when they happen to be in your division. Anyway "AL East Pride " was really one of my many clever and stealthy slights at the SEC conference.

Monkeydad 04-07-2011 04:42 PM

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread

^ But the SEC is the greatest conference ever. Any of their teams could beat the Cleveland Browns.

I can't root for conference/division rivals either...unless they're playing the Red Sox or Cowboys. :D

Re: Official Nationals and Orioles 2011 Thread

The Os were never as good as their like 32-26 finish last season nor their 6-1 start this season. . . but they arent as bad the 7 game slide either.

Os should hopefully finish around .500 which will be a huge success for us and allow us to make a big move or 2 this offseason to make a true push for contention in the AL east.

We have to go .500 this year to justify a big contract offer for the likes of a prince fielder next offseason. But we need our young pitching prospects make good on their potential this year to be competitive.

Kinda cool to see a 5 year plan in action, this year is year 4 where we are supposed to have our young groomed arms show us they can make a competent pitching staff. Next year, all goes well, the Os are going to be competing.

The first couple years (1-3) we drafted young pitchers and a top talent catcher. Last season (3rd year into plan) they all got a taste of the big leagues. This year they have to prove we can rely on them. Next year/step is give a player or two one of those 7 yr 160 miml contracts. After that its continuous winning until the core we built up breaks down.

so i guess bobby bonilla's agent is the greatest agent in the history of modern sports

[quote]
The Mets will pay Bonilla $1.2 million annually for the next 25 years despite him not having played for them since 1999 or in the big leagues since 2001....

Bonilla is also being paid $500,000 annually by the Baltimore Orioles until 2015 for a similar buyout and he holds a “special assistant” job with MLB that pays him $200,000 a year.
