Draft Sleepers
So in past years, I've had my eye on certain mid to late round picks (Zack Bowman, Connor Barwin, James Starks....jevan snead
But this year, I'm not sure anyone is really catching my attention. How about the rest of you? Any draft sleepers?
I absolutely don't want the Redskins to draft Kyrie Irving. That would be my draft nightmare while I sleep
|
Re: Draft Sleepers
I'm going to be a homer, but I'll at least post a link that Matty posted in the draft thread.
See Pat Irwin's sleeper - Tyrod Taylor! NFL.com news: QB-needy teams might wait to find their guy in Round 2 I am talking about a 5th round pick at worst for a guy that may end up at wr, we need help there too. Another Hokie that might drop to the 7th or UDFA is RB Darren Evans. He isn't anything special but is a tough runner, would fit the zone scheme well, and will definitely do whatever it takes to make the team. Otherwise, didn't get to see much outside of ACC & bowl games. Don't feel I can add much beyond what the scouts have already said. |
Re: Draft Sleepers
There a decent crop of 2nd tier RBs whom I would consider sleepers...look to last year, Blunt and Ivory were the top rookie RBs and neither were drafted.
This year is prime in the RBs department to pull a Shanny special, even though some of those "sleepers" look to be moving up on boards from what im hearing. |
Re: Draft Sleepers
Demarco Murray

Well he has injury issues but he's a pretty good RB when healthy, he is very good in Pass Catching also |
Re: Draft Sleepers
Sleepers....With six of our eight picks coming 5th round and beyond, we're going to need as many "sleepers" as we can possibly find. Andrew Lewis DT Syracuse, Jabari Fletcher OLB Appalachian State, Darvin Adams WR Auburn just to name a few I know are going to be overlooked in the draft, BIMO have upside with the right team.

Re: Draft Sleepers
If round one takes too long and I've had a long day, I will be a draft sleeper.
Otherwise I'll go with Thomas Keiser, OLB from Stanford. Reasonably big, reasonably fast, and smart, so that he should adapt to the NFL quickly. |
Re: Draft Sleepers
I got lots of sleepers, which I feel like after I name them all they won't be considered sleepers anymore.
QB: Ricky 'Brady' Stanzi Greg McElroy RB: Taiwan Jones -Eastern Washington Evan Royster Noel Devine Keith Payne- UVA Dion Lewis- Pitt (Matt Millen called him the next Barry Sanders) OL: David Arkin - G - Missouri State Will Rackley - G - Lehigh Marcus Cannon - G/T - TCU Lee Zimba - T - Auburn Ryan Pugh - C - Auburn Kris O'Dowd - C - USC Brandon Fusco - C - Slippery Rock Jake Kirkpatrick - C - TCU (2 time rimmington trophy winner) Ryan Barthelome - C - Syracuse Chase Beeler - C - Standford WR: Jeff Maehl - Oregon Jeremy Kurley - TCU DeAndre Brown - Southern Miss Tyson Poots - Southern Utah DJK - Iowa Dane Sanzenbacker - Ohio st Matt Szczur - Villanova NT Jerrell Powe - Ole miss Kenrick Ellis - Hampton anthony gray - Southern Miss Sione Fua- Standford OLB: Kenny Rowe - Oregon Bruce Miller - UCF ILB: Darrell Gamble - Georgia CB: Justin Rogers - Richmond Davon House - New Mexico State Korey Lindsey - Southern Illinois Brandon Hogan - WVU Jason Teague - TCU Reggie Rembert - Air Force Chimdi Chekwa - Ohio St. FS: Tejay Johnson - TCU P: Chas Henry - Florida K: Alex Henry - Nebraska Dan Bailey - OSU Wes Byrum - Auburn |
Re: Draft Sleepers
Well lets list sleepers that emerged last year and see if anyone thought they would amount to something.
LeGarrette Blount - RB - Bucs - This is one that we all figured was capable of doing some damage. Tony Moeaki - TE - Cheifs - Didn't see that one coming. Wasn't dynamite but 300 yards for a 3rd round TE is pretty solid. Koa Misi - OLB - Dolphins - I think some of us had him pegged as a possible impact player. Mike Williams - WR - Bucs - I don't think anyone wanted to look at recievers last year. Riley Cooper - WR - Philly - 5th round steal apparently. |

Re: Draft Sleepers
(C-OG) Ryan Bartholomew from Syracuse. After you plug his name in your favorite search engine, I won't be the only one talking about him.

Re: Draft Sleepers
Check that..... Cult mentioned him too.

What about some players that ended up being sleepers from the 2008 and 2009 draft, because after reading midseason and end of season rookie reports a lot of guys drafted after round 2 were simply relegated to backup duty if anything at all. I still contend though that it's always the guys we've never heard of on draft day that end up being the good players. Only one I can find for now is Steve Johnson - WR - Buffalo. A 2008 7th round pick from Kentucky (SEC Pride ya'll) that just posted a 1,073 10 TD season....IN BUFFALO! Here's some more: 2008: Anthony Collins - OT - Cincinati - 4th round pick out of Kansas Carl Nicks - OG - Saints - 5th Round pick out of Nebraska. Davone Bess - WR - Dolphins - UDFA out of Hawaii. Steve Slaton - RB - Texans - 3rd Round Pick out of West VA. 2009 Sebastian Vollmer - OT - Patriots - Second Round Pick out of Houston DeAndre Levy - LB - Lions - 3rd Round pick out of Wisconsin. |
Re: Draft Sleepers
Slaton really hasn't done anything

You're talking about just a few players. Plus, I mentioned Carl Nicks back in the winter of 2008. And 53Fan mentioned Vollmer. And I'm sure there's more So I think "it's always the guys we've never heard of on draft day that end up being the good players" may be just a bit off base |
Re: Draft Sleepers
Davon House - New Mexico State ... Darrell Green 2.0 baby! But really, the guys got the instincts and the physical tools, he is a bit raw though. Also he was coached by Dwayne Walker, who was a pretty good Db coach here. And is endorsed by NM Redskin, booyah.

I consider most of them to be 3rd Down Back candidates (actually, more like change of pace RB candidates because I don't know if they can pass-protect). We should be able to get a good RB prospect late. Two backs I like very much who may have moved up from "sleeper" to higher round status are Kendall Hunter (Ok St) and Delone Carter (Syr). I have been very impressed with Hunter every time I've seen him play but his lack of size (5-7, 200) may be an issue. I like everything about Delone Carter and I think he may have a good NFL career. He is bigger than Hunter at 5-9, 222 which should help him to endure the pounding a RB takes in the NFL. Jordan Todman (UConn) is another good prospect with NFL size who may have moved up since the Combine. I'm trying to like DeMarco Murray as much as some others here do, but I just can't. He runs too high, he's always injured, and he just seems to lack toughness. Pass. Another player that I'm told to like but don't is Evan Royster. I've never seen him do anything on the football field that impressed me. Two late round RB's who are blazing fast and can catch the ball are Da'Rel Scott (Md) and Nic Grigsby (Az). These guys are potential home run hitters and I think they'll get an opportunity with some team. I'd include Derrick Locke with this group if I didn't think that he's too slight for the NFL. |
Re: Draft Sleepers
Why not Pat Devlin? I can honestly see us taking him if we don't take a QB with our first two picks. If we don't take someone in the 5th, Pat Devlin looks like a good choice in the 6th. Some may even consider him with one of our 5th rounders.
In other words, I'll gladly lead the Pat Devlin bandwagon :P |
Re: Draft Sleepers
I think J Baldwin from Pitt will slip into the 3-4 round but will be a pretty good WR

Not to play semantics, but he's hardly a sleeper. His ability & issues have been well documented. He may fall that far but his talent is first round worthy. Wouldn't call him a sleeper, I'd call him a fairly calcuable risk. |

Re: Draft Sleepers
He has what I love to see in a mid-late round QB. Pocket presence, pretty good mechanics, he's capable of making reads, and he's got a good enough arm.

Re: Draft Sleepers
Well if you want to talk QB sleepers, Mustain and Massoli are two guys who, based on talent alone, are probably 1st maybe 2nd round picks, but Mustain's never been able to hold on to a starting job and Massoli has a record with illegal substances. May be worth a flyer in the 7th for either of them

Re: Draft Sleepers
I think some people need to revisit the def. for sleeper.
Demarco Murray etc. |

That poor guy can't even make a AFL squad....lol Got cut by Tampa Bay Storm before the season started. Dwayne Harris - WR (ECU) would be my sleeper. |

Massoli is a pretty smart kid too isn't he? Graduated already anyway. Didn't he also lie about some of his problems too? |

He's got a whole truck load of problems. To be clear, he's not someone I think the Skins should take a chance on in the 7th, but that some team probably would |

Re: Draft Sleepers
Do you mean Demarco Murray isn't a sleeper or that he is the definition of one?
He's been on the national scene forever and he's one of the top rated players at his position and considered at worst a 3rd round prospect.
