World Cup Soccer Anyone Even Care

So I figured someone would have started a thread but I guess most people are like me and don't really give a sh!t about soccer.

Women are up by 1

I tend to side with Jim Rome about soccer.

I care...because I get paid the big bucks to care

But I know not many others here do. I'm a huge tennis fan but I know I'm in the minority so I'm selective about starting posts related to it

Anyhow, USA has been sensational these last two days. And Abby Wambach has been the anti-Lebron. Totally clutch

Totally clutch[/quote]I've been following it off and on and I think it's awesome that they're in the final. I only saw a little bit of a one game, and it happened to be Sunday against Brazil when the refs made that ridiculous call (but I tend to think the majority of soccer calls are stupid because the rules really need to be updated IMO) and it surprised me how mad I got.

Abby Wambach has been pretty amazing to watch. She's been a regular guest on Elliot In The Morning for a few years now and she always comes across as a cool person so it's nice to see her doing so well.

My wife plays tennis and likes to watch the big matches. I actually like watching the matches but don't tell my wife because she thinks I only do so for her.

Thank you, I was thinking of starting this thread.

I've been riveted from the beginning. In fact, I followed the qualifiers. Wambach is of course too cool for school. But I've been more impressed by the emergence of Morgan and Rapinoe. Chaney has been surprisingly productive, too.

That Brazil game might be the best game that I have ever seen. Going back to the Korea game, though, you could tell that this team had something going on. I was worried after the Mexico loss in the qualifiers but the girls have really picked it up when it counts.

The ladies had better improve in terms of midfield possession against Japan, though.

Exactly. I cannot wrap my brain around the video game thing. Anyway, I've been loving these games. Can't wait until Sunday's match! Wambach is so clutch (Florida Gator BTW), and who doesn't love Hope Solo?

She's my least favorite for the way that she threw others under the bus in 2007.

I'm still trying to figure out if I think Hope Solo is attractive or not. She's definitely not ugly, and usually the first thing I notice about a woman (from the neck up at least) is her eyes and Hope's aren't too shabby, but I'm just not sure. And really, honestly, that's what women's sports come down to for me...

I'm with you. I can't say that part of the attraction of women's soccer for me isn't gandering at cuties such as Solo, Inka Grings, Virginia-born Ali Krieger, or the hottest of all, Alex Morgan.

I am deeply, deeply disappointed in the men of this board objectifying these hard working, accomplished young women. We should be celebrating their accomplishments, not how they look in go-go boots and a little yellow dress.

What an unbelievable match. What a great moment for Japan after such a devastating year for that country.

I haven't seen a more clutch player than Abby Wambach in any sport the past couple of years, too bad the rest of the team couldn't put the game away.

Tremendous match, and excellent sportsmanship by both sides.

I detect a bit of tongue-in-cheek in your comments. But, anyhow, you know it goes both ways. There are women who adore football, basketball, etc., for the good-looking men.

I actually like the women's game because they are more team-oriented than the men. Look at the World Cup winners, Japan - I can't think of any men's team that is so team-oriented in their play.

But it doesn't hurt if the women are hot, too. :)

Very much tongue in cheek.

To me, women's sports is like the CFL or Div. II basketball - Everything is a beat or two slower adn you don't have the amazing feats of athleticism that you get in the top men's games but there are some very athletic individuals and plays. For them, the real athleticism is, as you said, in the team work.

I like watching women's sports from time to time and enjoy the emphasis on fundamentals. I have to admit, however, I can't think of too many "Holy crap - Did you see that?!?!", jaw dropping athletic feats in all the time I've watched them. MJ had more such highlights in one year than all I've seen in women's sports.

With that said, good run USA. Well played, no shame in a losing a game like that. Better luck next time.

Re: World Cup Soccer Anyone Even Care

The US team just simply didn't put Japan away when they had the chance. They missed opportunity after opportunity throughout the game. Even then, all they had to do is play half ass defense and they could have won the game, and even that was too much for them. A blown clear, a goal between 4 defenders. Stopping their attack after their score in extra time. Missed PKs. Obviously they didn't want this bad enough.

It def goes both ways. For me watching womens' sports is 90% for the few good looking women involved, and 10% interest in watching w/e sport it is. I just caught the last 10 min of the WC final, and that'll probably be the most I'll watch for the next couple years. But it def. goes both ways, the only reason my sister wanted to go to a Skins TC practice a couple years ago was because she thinks Chris Cooley is really good looking.
