Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

Not a deal that suggests that they're about to sign Jenkins. This is a big one.

I don't know much about him, but I guess that means our d-line is complete with Bowen-Cofield-J. Jenkins

And the Redskins have now exceeded the CBA requirement for cash spent in the 2011 season, doing so with 30+ million of deadcap.

Cullen could be headed to Dallas now.

Who called this? Someone here did a while back I think.

I know one of my sources (a former scout, but not Dan Shonka) called it in April. But honestly, he's such a terrible source (wrong 3 out of 4 times) that I totally disregarded it

I posted this on another thread great sign guys you got a guy cheaper, young that can play both the 3-4 and 4-3 that's on the raise great signing this relly hurts us.. the contract is 5 years 27.5 mill with 12.5 guaranteed

Is this guy any damn good? I know he played for Spears when he went down but I really didn't see all that much. Your d was god awful last year.

He was actually going to be the starter thsi year and was the starter last year after Spears went down. Of the 3 FA DE we had Spears, Bowen and Hatcher... our front office wanted Bowen back

Yeah I meant Jarvis Jenkins there.

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

Well, he's 3 years younger than C. Jenkins. Perhaps it was a "buy the younger guy" kind of deal.

Revamping the line certainly. Not seeing a lot of run-stuffers in the new group though.

yeah, me neither - dude's started 11 games in 5 seasons and clearly hasn't made much of an impression. To give him as much money as they did is a little stupid in my book.

Monkeydad 07-28-2011 01:25 PM

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

Dallas fans seem to be high on him. He had been a backup but a productive one.

Interesting development, because Dallas was our competition for Cullen Jenkins.

I do not think this ends our chances...we have money to spend, Dallas has been scrambling to get under the cap enough just to re-sign a couple of guys like Doug Free.

No they did not over pay. He is young and on the upswing in his career. Jenkins has been hurt on and off in his career and still wanted a pay day.

Exactly I like this way more... you get a young guy with not much wear and tear cheap because he will be your starter for the next 5 years at 5 mill per year

He was stuck behind Igor Olshansky and Marcus Spears on the depth chart...two very good DEs.

He is probably one of the top 3-4 DEs available, along with Cullen. We might get both of them!
DE Stephen Bowen, Cowboys: The smiling, baby-faced Bowen doesn't look the part of defensive menace, at least in the locker room. He can create havoc, though, and good things frequently happen for the Cowboys when he's on the field.

Bowen is a dangerous third-down pass rusher who had three sacks and 33 pressures last season. His role could increase this year, as the Cowboys seem to be phasing out defensive end Marcus Spears
.

contract numbers or sack/tackle numbers?

stats mean nothing for 3/4 defensive linemen. Their stats are how many sacks the outside linebackers get. Their job is to have three fat linemen be able to push 5 offensive linemen so linebackers can get free.

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

Looks like a rare bad contract by Bruce Allen. I'm sure he had Bowen rated really, really close to Cullen Jenkins, and was willing to go to this level to lock up Jenkins, but our two worst FA contracts of the last two days are the defensive linemen. Lots of money locked up there.

We added two younger, talented guys, which is never a bad thing, but Bowen and Cofield are far from sure things.

NC_Skins 07-28-2011 01:42 PM

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

Even the Dallas fans are thinking this is a good move for the Skins. Most of them I've seen have said that Bowen outplayed Spears when he went down and most likely would have been the starter in Big D this year. I'd say it was a damn good signing.

Overpay? Probably not considering considering the 49ers signed their backup DE to a 5 year deal worth 20 mil with 7 guaranteed.
... multiple league sources say Bowen could "surprise" the general public with his eventual contract. That's because Bowen is a young player who is versatile and could just be reaching his prime.
did you even look up which games he started? he was a backup until last year when he filled in due to injury and did a phenominal job. IMO this is the best FA signing we've done thus far. VERY happy about this one.

Still, i am a bit interested to know who our starters along the Dline will be. i know its possible bowen, j jenkins, and cofield could all rotate in at NT, these three are all better suited to play DE... as is carriker. the way i see it, we've got several good DEs but not a single true NT. if we can fill this hole while we groom Nield, our pass rush is going to be INSANE this year.

Monkeydad 07-28-2011 01:45 PM

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

I'm happy that we plucked a quality D-lineman from two of our division rivals (Dallas and NJ) and we prevented the Eagles from getting the man they wanted for theirs in Haynesworth. If we cut him, they would have signed him.

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

This is a good signing. Given the choice between the young guy hitting his prime and the the big name approaching the downside and we chose the younger guy for a change yet they still get criticized. To many fans want "Snyderatto" type moves...they just want someone else making them for them. Maybe they still get Jenkins...maybe they don't...but I love that they are not just out there falling all over themselves to hand out blank checks to the big names.

Beemnseven 07-28-2011 01:47 PM

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

Unless a lot of people are wrong about this guy, Bowen was on the radar screen for a few teams.

As for the money, hey ... our defense pretty much got chewed up last year. I'd say the D-line was as significant a need to address as any other. We've basically overhauled the front three in a matter of two days.

Funny. I can say the same about the guy in your avatar. A whole lotta money for being one of the worst rated at his position. Talk about me being a hater, how about we wait and see how this plays out before jumping the gun.

We have money to spend and are forced to spend. Cofield and Bowen are far, FAR better than who...Antonio Bryant, Jarvis Jenkins and Kemoeatu?

We're upgrading the defense nicely.

well, if dallas is mad about it, that's always a plus... maybe the bidding on c jenkins went too high, maybe our FO did their research and snagged a great talent...

i don't know, i've never heard of him and didn't see him, but the roids fans i've talked to liked him, so i'll have to sit and wait on this.

no way we sign 3 DEs though, looks like we've got a DE, a NT/DE and then a rotation to fill out the lineup.

we still need a couple OL bodies, and some reasonable LBs.

would be nice to get A. Franklin too instead of also adding C.Jenkins. Dline is a good place to tie up a lot of money and have depth to keep legs fresh

Bryant is a NT and Jarvis Jenkins could be a NT. I think we have a solid d-line, let's see if Bryant can continue to play NT the way he did at the end of the season and how much Neild can contribute. We are going to have a strong run defense, and if the d-line does enough to take care of blockers, Kerringan and Orakpo will wreck havoc in the pass rush.

You say that, but Bowen is YOUNG AND UNPROVEN. He has potential BUT I'd rather have a known commodity, than a guy w/ upside. Not saying he won't be a good player, but C. JENKINS IS A PROVEN 3-4 DE. Therefore he's more deserving of a payday than Bowen. IMO

Monkeydad 07-28-2011 01:52 PM

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

I wasn't downing Bryant or our rookies, but we're adding some solid starters and using the guys we had for some great depth.

Fact is, our main downfall last season in Year #1 of the 3-4 was a shortage of actual 3-4 players.

That should not be an issue at all in 2011.
