Skins leading the NFL in total offense & defense

Yes of course, it's only preseason. But regardless it's still a bit of a surprise to see.

Even with our ones playing a lot of twos, it's still been better than expected.

The bigger story here is that our second and third teamers have been consistently better through two games than anyone elses. Does that mean anything? Not really. A lot of those guys are getting cut anyway. But it's worth noting*.

There seems to be a different attitude, a more cohesive O line, stiffer D, everything just seems 'shinier' somehow.

Yes, it's preseason but it gives us hope.

Exactly, Shanahan has completely changed the expectations -- let's not forget that our offense has a lot of new pieces and the D-line has basically been remade so I think that balances out any inferior competition we are playing. Let's hope it lasts into the regular season.

Time for the negatives:
2010 San Diego chargers led the league in offense and defense and still didn't make the playoffs so...

Will Montgomery was on NFL Radio this morning with Ross Tucker. There seems to be a quiet confidence coming from the players, heard the same kind of thing from Hightower the other day too.

I'm not sure how this season is going to go as far as wins and losses, but I do think the Skins are going to be a tough out.

Key words there. I'll think more of it if we look like this in the regular season.

Encouraging but it is preseason. The third game of the preseason is the best gauge of how the team will look in the regular season. Most teams play their starters for three quarters. The Ravens are relatively healthy, so we will see their best. I think the team is making strides, I want to see how they look Thursday.

This. While preseason scores do not count, we have a new "youngry" attitude which will keep us in games. We may lose games because of lack of experience or talent but we should compete.

I like to believe that the teams scoring offense has been a result of just executing plays as supposed to game planning. Some would say you always play to win but, it's the preseason and you don't show your hand to early. That is what Spurrier did.

A few years ago Detriot went undefeated in pre season and went 0-16 in the regular season. We all remember Osaka. Back in 87 we played like shit during the pre season and won the SB. Anyone remember the Playboy incident with Gibbs and Buckhanz?? Pre season games mean nothing, teams aren't game planning. However there are some very nice bright spots in camp this year.

Can't think of a better opponent to see how we are going to fare this upcoming season. The Ravens D looked in mid-season form against the Chiefs last week.

During his 8/22 press interview, Beck mentioned that the Ravens will be a very good measuring stick for the team as a whole because of their intensity. Interested in seeing how they do.

I'm not surprised because it seems to me like the Skins are playing these games like regular season games. Not as much as when OBC was here but still they arent holding anything back.

This.

If we move the ball well against the Ravens my expectations for this season will officially have been changed dramatically.

Even if we struggle my eyes have been opened. We are getting better fast.

I don't want to just "move the ball." I want to SCORE TOUCHDOWNS. Tired of getting to the 10 yard line and TW giving up a sack. If we win on 5 field goals, we haven't fixed our main problem.

The difference between the top teams and bottom teams is slim. We tend to lose games by less than 3 pts -- Last year we had 12 games decided by less than a touchdown, and NINE games by a field goal or less. Our defense could get us closer this year, but we still need to score TDs. Can't remember the last time we were blowing the other team away and I wasn't on the edge of my seat in the 4th quarter... Our largest margin of victory last year? The first game, by 6 points.

Don't get me wrong - I've loved our moves - good young players. Good showing so far in preseason, but it's simple - we definitely need to score touchdowns to win.

Re: Skins leading the NFL in total offense & defense

I know some of you are saying its only preseason....but outside of Gibbs and Spurrier, preseason performance has been a pretty good indicator of the season in the last 10 years or so...and even Gibbs to some extent....the weaknesses in preseason generally rolled into the regular season.
I do agree that this next game is key...no way do I think the skins will have the top offense and defense in the regular season....however....this team has seen few glaring weaknesses....outside of red zone, and a QB who sometimes throws 10 yard inside bullets to linebackers. The oline sometimes gets pushed back...which could hurt in short yardage and goal line....and I am unsure about our CBs...but boy, I feel far more comfortable at this point than any point probably back to Spurrier, when we were all duped.
Except this time, performance in preseason will very likely translate well to the regular season...it is not about points....in preseason, it is about how the team generally performs and so far, most of us are quite impressed

We are building, and what we are seeing is a team that is building in the right direction. I do like what I see, but the last couple of years have toned down the way I view the preseason. I think we are all more happy to be watching football, and thinking that our team looks awesome. It's just that we haven't seen them in a while. I'm hoping for the best though.

Excited about tonight's game! I do agree that this game will be a true measuring stick as to how the Redskins should perform during the regular season. I also agree with a lot of you who said there seems to be a difference in confidence of players this year. Coach Shanahan wanted to come in and change the philosophy around Redskins Park, and I think so far, he's doing it. It's still going to take at least another year or so to get this team into being a consistent winner, but I am loving the changes we have seen so far.

Re: Skins leading the NFL in total offense & defense

Preseason stats are not as definitive, but the rankings are not complete mirages. For example, we had the 28th ranked rush D last preseason. That certainly did translate in the regular season, as we finished 26th.

Our passing defense was a different story, as the preseason rankings had us in the top 5 yardage-wise but we finished 30th.

The difference between a mirage and the "read deal" is seeing if there are major "danger signs", and so far, I haven't many "danger signs" like in preseasons past.

Then again, with such a small sample size, total yards is a worse stat to use than average yards per (run/attempt)

I would say that means we are out coaching and our scouting is better then the other teams.
