What do you guys think, will he pull in defensive ROY honors?

I keep hearing that Vilma is gonna get it or Boulware. I doubt they'll give it to Taylor...

Vilma, Boulware, and even Darnell Dockett could get it over him, but he's certainly in the running. At least until SC sees the thread.

LOL yeah he's definitely in the running, good thing SC doesn't have a vote.

I think he will be second to Vilma but Colman, D.J. Williams, Daunta Robinson and Sean Taylor all made strong cases. GREAT year for defensive rookies.

ESPN didn't even put him on their first-team all rookie squad.

It was a pretty good year for rookies in general. Big Ben, Michael Clayton, Lee Evans, Kevin Jones, etc...

Here's their pick for free safety:

"David's college teammate, Erik Coleman, was an easy pick at safety. The fifth-rounder was third on the Jets with 88 tackles, had four interceptions, two sacks and five pass deflections."

Sean's stats: 76 tackles, 4 picks, 1 sack, [U]15[/U] pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles. If you want to say Coleman was a better value (in the 5th round) than Taylor, fine - but "an easy pick"?

OK, so someone explain to me how Chris "Dangerfield", I mean Chris Gamble hasn't gotten a mention on this thread or ESPN's "Rookie Team??

Gamble: 66 tackles, 6 INTS!, 1 forced fumble and 14 pass deflections!

compare to...

Jason David: 55 tackles, 4 Ints, 1 FF, 15 PD (He made "All-Rookie" team)

Gamble also had to learn the position on the fly coming from being a receiver in college.

But I think you HAVE to say Dunta Robinson for D-ROY... INCREDIBLE numbers...

Robinson: 88 tackles!! 6 INTS!! 3 sacks!! 19 PD!! ... WOW! Taylor doesn't compare here....

It should def. be Sean Tayler. A lot of what Sean tayler does isn't seen my the naked eye. Just think about all those corner blitz's we did this year, you know why we never got burned, because Sean Tayler has the rare ability to cover a WR as a safety. He was great in coverage and that isn't always easy to see either. I think all us Skins fan know we got one hell of a superstar coming up.

I also love seeing Sean throw his body into the wedge to break it up on special teams.

Forget Defensive ROY, that sentence is the best damn thing I have ever read.

Well...since I was mentioned a few times in this thread let me clear a few things up. One, Boulware and Dockett were both Noles, and should NEVER be confused with Canes. Thats as bad as saying that Darell Green is a Cowboy.

Second, Im not sure how they decide on rookie of the year. Vilma and Robinson have the best stats. But Taylor is the type of player that is in on everyplay, and makes players think twice about what they do and call. AKA, Pinkston looking both ways before crossing the street. Also, we had a top ranked defense, and Taylor had more to do with that then most people realize. We dont have a steller dline, so we blitz with our corners and linebackers. That only works with a stud safety. Taylor is one of three players in the league that is a safety that can probably line up with any receiver in the league.

But with all that being said be probably wotn get the award. DJ Williams is also up for it, another Cane who is turning out to be a beast. Taylor will however begin to take over aging Brian Dawkins spot as a perennial probowl safety

FYI, I just looked on ESPN.com, and he didnt even make the all rookie team. They gave it to a fifth round pick from the jets.

I think he started off slow, he missed a bunch of tackles, definitly can on strong and was there on every tackle. I think that Williams system is so precise on where people should be that he didnt get to ball hawk very much. Im impressed that he acutally followed his assignments and played as a team. All in all, I expected a fewmore picks.

Given that he was the first defensive player taken in the draft, the standards for his rookie season are set pretty high. I'd say he failed to meet those standards most of the time.

His coverage blunder cost us the 2nd Dallas game. Yes, I know if the offense had scored 42 points that day the Cowboys would never have been in the position to win the game. That argument is bogus because I can turn it around and say if the defense had pitched a shutout up to that time the TD woud not have mattered either. Fact is the TD decided the game and Testaverde (not Unitas or Montana or Elway ) schooled the freelancing kid.

Contrary to what SkinsNCanes thinks, it was not Sean Taylor that caused Todd Pinkston to get alligator arms; it was Ryan Clark. Look at the play closely and #36 is the guy who is 5 yards behind PInkston straining to catch up; #36 is the guy beaten on the play.

In that same Eagles' game, Taylor was the one who was late to the coverage that gave Greg Lewis a catch at the Skins 2 yard line and then it was Taylor on the next play who did not wrap up on Dorsey Leavens as he went into the end zone for the winning score. That TD was the difference in the game.

I no longer have the tape of the Cleveland game but Taylor gave up the 4th down conversion on the Browns' final drive and was late in coverage on the final score. I THINK he also had a penalty on that drive too. While you can hang the Dallas loss around his neck, he can only share the blame for that loss.

So, if he cost the team at least two games all by himself by not making a big play when it was needed. Remember that two more wins would put the Skins at 8-8 and there are a couple of teams in the playoffs at 8-8.

So, I'd say that on-field performance for Taylor this year has been far below the standard that one might expect from the first defensive player taken in the draft.

And I need not mention his off-field performances on this day - the one where he has to stand trial for DWI. Of course he'll be acquitted and not be guilty in the eyes of the law becuse he has the money to make that happen.

I wonder if he'll use the courtroom steps this afternoon - after his exoneration - to announce that he wants his contract renegotiated or he will be holding out next summer...

I know it's hard for you but why not look at some of the positives too, just to be fair?

In the Dallas game where he blew the coverage, don't forget he stripped Julius Jones as he was headed in to the endzone saving us the TD. He saved a TD and gave one up, I guess you can call it a wash.

Yes it was Ryan Clark that was the safety coming over on Pinkston, perhaps Pinkston was afraid of anyone with a white jersey at that moment, or perhaps after watching film all week on the Skins he had Taylor in the back of his head, who knows I guess. Whatever the answer is I would believe it, as long as it's not this he lost ball in the lights crap.

Personally I have a problem blaming two losses entirely on one player. In any game there are always plenty of critical plays that all add up in the end.

In my opinion Taylor had a solid rookie year, he did make mistakes, but mistakes are part of the game when you start a rookie and should be expected. He also had his flashes of brilliance and gave us reason to believe he'll continue to grow.

Are you saying you can't find any positives from his rookie year?? Surely even a curmudgeon like yourself can find something positive to say. ;)

Here are the positives for Sean Taylor:

He is a physical specimen. He is bigger and faster and hits harder than any other DB on the team.

WHEN/IF he learns to tackle - not clobber - opponents and WHEN/IF he realizes that there are reasons why he has assignments in specific defenses that he really should not abandon and WHEN/IF he ever gets his off-field life in some kind of order, he has the POTENTIAL to be a great player.

Remember that potential means he has not yet done a damned thing so he is nowhere near great yet. In fact, he's less than one should have expected from the first defensive player taken in the draft.

That's as positive as I can be at the moment even with this being the New Year and all of us trying to be kinder and gentler and all that stuff. Now WHEN/IF ...

SC, looks like Taylors off-field antics wore off on fellow players. Pierce better watch out or he may take over the "Meathead" title from Taylor. :joke: :silly:
