Scud's Studs (week 7 @ Carolina)

Not too much praise today. I'll keep it short and sweet:

John Beck: after that 1st half break-in period, he played pretty well. I do have an issue with him staring down receivers at times. But neither turnover was really on him.

Adam Carriker: the lone bright spot on defense today with 1.5 sacks.

Graham Gano: once again proves reliable and hits another long (49yd) one.

Tim Hightower: dude was in total beast mode before he went down. Looks like we'll be without him for a while.

Fred Davis: our most reliable target in the passing game.

That's it really.

No Paulsen? I thought he was kinda a surprise for a guy who never gets his name called. Made a couple of good catches in the middle. Kinda makes me miss Yoder.

I told you Beck and Carriker would be studs today :)

One of these days you'll put Kyle Shanahan on this list. I know I'm probably his only defender here, but htis offense gets guys open and it can be extremely productive if we cut down on mistakes

Promising news from Kelli Johnson on Hightower: Initial tests and x-rays on his knees were negative.

Still have to wait for the MRI though.

I was actually going to mention Kyle as an addendum. He finally stuck with run while Tim was churning. I think at one point we ran it 8 or 9 straight times.

And you're right about the mistakes. If we don't have all those drops today, that final score may look a lot closer.

Well, there's at least two of us...

If we can ever get ourselves a decent QB, the complaints about Kyle will stop. Course, that would be true of every coordinator, I suppose.

And don't forget Erik Cook -- 1st career start. Held his opponent to zero tackles, zero tackle assists, zero pressures, zero sacks.

Edited: Mooby says he got worked over on the sack on 4th down. Oh well.

mooby 10-23-2011 06:35 PM

2nd half Beck. He gets a pass for the first half, he was clearly nervous. And the drops in the second half were on the receivers. But yes, he played better than Grossman today.

Not true of Jimmy Raye

Hightower/Gano

Thats really about all who deserve it this week. I would love to add Beck but he just did not do enough to warrant stud status, but I see it coming if he can get some support.

Yes, point taken. Per Wikipedia, Jimmy's famous for offenses that rank in the bottom third of the league.

This may be true, but what we know is neither QB on our roster is top tier. Kyle isn't scheming for Schaub anymore. He needs to adjust to our current roster and our division IMO. I'm not denying Beck's ability to complete passes, but simple fact is we don't have a WR on the roster who can turn a reception into yardage consistently. Davis has that ability. That's it. Passing all day given the roster we have now is just asking for more turnovers, drops and stalled drives.

This line has shown it likes to roll up defenses when it gets chugging and Helu is very talented. Run the rock to set up the pass here and there. Mike should be calling plays if Kyle can't seem to adjust his scheme.

Still better than Casey "I'm Jay Raliff's bitch" Rabach. Good job by him.

WilbursHomie 10-24-2011 03:03 AM

Yeah, I liked the play calling today. Gotta give Kyle credit when he deserves it. Even if it wasnt effective, it was still the right game plan. We just gotta except the fact that we don't have a lot of playmaker options on offense and that we're gonna end up around 500. Just gotta watch the young players grow and wait for an offensive injection of talent this draft. It's all about next year.

Hightower, gano and carriker

beck was okay, but we had so many injuries (or was it just awful play) today that it's pretty hard to tell who's to blame for that hot mess, or sort out who wasn't.

hightower ran hard, gano did his job, everyone else had good and bad moments.

I have one last Stud to nominate:

The Warpath

When the Redskins are doing well this place is a ghost town, now that we are back to our loser ways the traffic on here will increase and so will the drama!

OL, Beck, Hightower, and Gano. (possibly Davis)

That's about it. As horrible as the D played, I'm not putting any of those suckers on this list.

Davis does should not get a Scuds Studs. He dropped that ball in the third which I think killed the momentum our O was starting to build.

Which is why I put him on the (possibly) category. Those drops were huge and were absolutely momentum killers.

- Hightower

- Gano

- Paulsen

Re: Scud's Studs (week 7 @ Carolina)

Beck (If our defense played the same as the first 5 games.. I think we win this because of him)

Hightower

Monty (Wow! He was terrific blocking the pass and run at guard. Very impressed)

Locklear (A penalty.. A late sack, but man this guy held the fort down pretty good against Johnson)

Davis (Paulsen caught passes because nobody knew who he was.. Davis is our best threat and aside from a dropped ball, he did a great job. Loved the touchdown grab too)

Steve Smith The guy single handedly beat us, Newton put the ball near him and that's all it took.

Locklear had two holding penalties, but both came when the defender was clearly offsides (although only the first was called by the every mediocre refs). That seems entirely unfair. When a guy jumps offsides, are you supposed to let him have a free shot at your QB? In both instances, the jump put the defender basically in our backfield, and Locklear was trying to make sure Beck didn't get killed. I confess I don;t know the rule here (and it may simply be, don't hold ever), but it seems bogus to penalize him for these.

I agree that Davis should not be on the list. A good day, but a key drop on 3rd down when we were still in the game killed our momentum, and the Panthers got the ball and never looked back.

Although I like the run-heavy offense, I thought Kyle's playcalling on passing downs was poor. The Panthers often doubled Davis, and he didn't seem to adjust exceopt for the one drive when Paulsen was targeted. Also, Kyle didn't seem to notice that Beck seemed more effective when he rolled out to pass than when he stepped up in the pocket, yet there were few rollouts. Also, why no passes to our RBs when the Panthers LBs were not playing well? Helu seems to be a good reciever, and I think he could have gashed these guys. Finally, was Stallworth in the witness protection program yesterday? It was like a Ralph Ellison novel out there. Geez.

The Redskins have not done well for officiating crews this year. I think they are supposed to get each crew once or something, so at least that part should improve going forward.

I doubt seriously that the each team is supposed to get each officiating crew once a season. That would be a scheduling nightmare for the league beyond belief.

Moreover, as the season gets into December and there are some games that are clearly more important than others, the league will be sure to have its higher graded crews working those games. It is sort of like the announcing teams.

Think about it; on Jan 1 2012 the Indy Colts wind up their season against the Jax Jags. Wanna bet that game is not covered by the network's #1 announcing team?

considering both of those teams have been on prime time FAR too often already... *sigh*
