Disapointment?
http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/Features/NFL+Features/2004/question011505.htm
A lot of people over at PFW think we were a disappointment this year. Whatever, I think it takes a year... |
i would have to say they are right
|
“The Redskins — again. Every year you hear about them making all these offseason moves, with hiring Joe Gibbs being the latest example. And every year they don't make the playoffs.”
Just wait until next year!
“Joe Gibbs. We're talking about a Hall of Fame coach, and his introduction to a new generation of football fans went over about as well as a string bikini at a baptism. Were the Redskins a serious Super Bowl contender? Probably not. But the idea that the game has passed Gibbs by is ludicrous, though he does have some catching up to do. On his side are many factors, with the exception of age, and that Dan "Billions" Snyder will make the salary-cap era more manageable for the Skins. As quickly as Gibbs was cast as a disappointment, he'll be back in the surprise category next season.”
I think the last line sums it up best
“Two things come to mind: the Redskins' signing of Mark Brunell and the Raiders' signing of Warren Sapp. Both units — Washington's offense and Oakland's defense — were ranked near the bottom of the NFL, and both players did little for the money they made. Brunell fit, in theory, everything Joe Gibbs wanted in a quarterback, but the problem was that he simply has lost it. He's no more than a high-priced backup at this point, and some have argued that Gibbs was too slow to pull the trigger and go with Patrick Ramsey.
Really can't argue with that This time next year though, we'll be making our Redskins Divisional Playoffs predictions! |
We're defintley a dissapointment this year. At least I was very dissapointed with how we turned out. Now the critics who are saying Gibbs is a failure, and shouldnt have come back, I disagree completley. The expectations were way too high at the begining of the year, but I had the expectations too, so I'll label the season as a dissapointment, however this is a team defintley headed down the right path.
|
What would have been a disappointment if right now we were going though the same old same old January exceitment of getting new coaches and figuring which big ticket players we are getting rid of/getting in.
To me there were far more dissappointing teamswho were even in the NFCE who seem to have slipped under the radar how about them Giants who slipped from 5-4 to 6-10 or the cowboys who were 10-6 and now 6-10... |
I agree. For once in I don't know how many years it appears that we'll have all of our coaches back next season. It also looks like most of our key players will be back with the possible exception of Smoot. The office has said resigning Pierce is a priority so they are definitely headed in the right direction.
I was very disappointed this season because my expectations were way too high with Coach Gibbs back again. My expectations will be high again this coming season but I expect them to be met this time. Go Skins!!!! :httr: |
The Redskins were a dissapointment this year. Doesn't mean that Gibbs wont eventually fix things but 6-10 with the Redskins coaching staff and talent is terrible. The Redskins needed at least 9 wins this year not to be labled a dissapointment.
That being said I still think we are pointed in the right direction... |
Just remember fellas, the Jets were 6-10 last year and this year they were 10-6 this year and a field goal away from the AFC championship which is "so much stronger than the NFC". All they really did was stay healthy and have a good draft no huge free agent pick ups. Next year we will not disappoint!
|
I am not dissappointed in the least. I said from day one after Gibbs was hired that they would be lucky to be over .500. He inherited a seroiusly underacheiving team. All this talk of playoffs and superbowl came from the media and some other folks on this site. I did not expect us to be dramticly better record wise. I did expect better play and we did get that. The team is going in the right direction, that is all that matters. I don't care how long it takes, just as long as we go in the right direction.
You can not polish a turd. It takes time to rebuild a team and it's attitude. |
6-10 is a disappointment any way you look at it
|
Certainly Joe Gibbs and the Washington Redskins were a dissapointment in the eyes of the media as well as alot of us (myself included) that bought into the instant success. So, like the second quote basically says, as soon as you count out Joe Gibbs, he will just as quickly prove you wrong...
I'm looking forward to laughing in the face of all the nah-sayers next year! |
This season was a disappointment at 6-10, but that does not mean that Joe Gibbs' return to the NFL is one. That still remains to be seen, and I have a ton of confidence that it will not be a disappointment. This season was the beginning of a building process, and because of that, the way they finished the season was not at all. The Brunell thing was a shock....many people agreed that he had declined and wasn't the QB he once was, but no one thought he had completely lost it like he showed. The Skins were 3-7 with him, and 3-4 with Ramsey. As many others do, I believe that had Gibbs made the switch 2-3 games earlier, we would have had at least 1-2 more wins. But that's all in the past now....what's done is done. Next year will be an improvement, especially with the coaching staff staying intact for 2 years in a row for the first time in what seems like forever.

Skinsguy - I've heard you say so many times you're going to laugh at the naysayers. Find one person on this forum, and more than 3 in the national media that says Gibbs doesn't have it anymore. You're just struggling to admit he didn't have it this season, it doesn't mean it's gone.
|
Matty has it right - as usual. 6-10 is disappointing.
Look back at the postings on The Warpath from Feb/March 2004. Gibbs was hired and the new coaching staff was in place and the free agent signings were done and the old deadwood was cut loose. Things were looking up. So the team that was 5-11 under a coach who didn't overwhelm anyone with his work ethic got rid of the deadwood and hired a HoF coach who brought in new talent - - and won exactly one more game in 2004 than that sad sack team had won in 2003. Folks, that's a disappointment no matter what color lipstick you put on it. |
It's a disappointment, but this isn't the same feeling as last year.
Last year, the questions (before Spurrier "retired"), were "Who do we fire from this staff to make things better?" Though I'm happy another offensive mind is joining the team, I feel pretty good about this staff, top to bottom. |

The season itself was a huge dissapointment to me, because I expected to be a playoff team. I was wrong. However, the direction of the team this year, is different than any team we've had in about 5 years. I've actually seen them progressing on the feild, and not just in the headlines. Now there is still alot of work to do, but if you watch the last game of the season last year, and the last game this year, you have reason to belive this team is going to be much better. Not because of the headlines, but because of their play. BTW, does anyone know when guys should start resigning. I'm getting a little restless waiting... |

I think the coaches are on a 2-week vacation right now, things should start picking up soon |

Time heals all wounds. |
Damn, its kinda fun to go back and see peoples predictions. Some people were actually close on some stuff.

Boy I really nailed it with the Falcons and Steelers, LOL

Okay, I'll accept the ball busting. Of course I had high expectations that fizzled. But what do you want me to say? I hate the Skins and refuse to ever cheer for them again? Call Joe Gibbs a disappointment? Hell no! So now I am of the school of thought "Wait 'til next year!", hence I say "it takes a year" Anyways, as far as my 12-4 record prediction, it should have happened. We should have swept the Cowboys, beat the Eagles on the Sunday nighter, beat Baltimore, Cleveland, and the Giants (the first time). None of those games were blow outs and the Skins were in a real postion to win them all. Just dumb mistakes prevented wins there. But with a year under Gibbs' belt, imagine next year! As far as my Cowher prediction that Brud brought up, hey, I just don't like the guy. So I was hoping he'd fall flat on his face. No BFD, he and his rookie QB will get creamed this weekend and that's good enough for me. |
