cpayne5 01-17-2005 12:46 PM

I'm speechless. I actually feel bad for the San Fran fans (the true fans).

Daseal 01-17-2005 01:03 PM

Well, you can send all 3 of them a GET WELL SOON card, Cpayne!

Good riddance, glad he's off the East Coast so we can watch him fail miserably on a National stage.

Redskins_P 01-17-2005 01:06 PM

From Dennis Erickson to Mike Nolan????? Is this supposed to be an improvement?

TheMalcolmConnection 01-17-2005 01:28 PM

I guess they gotta have SOMEBODY...:P

saden1 01-17-2005 02:00 PM

This is sad, back to back coaches that don't deserve to be head coaches.

Daseal 01-17-2005 02:01 PM

I must admit Im shocked they hired a defensive mind.

Gmanc711 01-17-2005 02:08 PM

Isnt Mike Nolan the guy who's always talking smack about the Skins??

Heres too 49ers @ Redskins opening the season next year!

And to think we have it bad as Redskins fans. The 49ers are by far the worst off team in the NFL. Seriously, they just have no hope whatsoever. Even I think Dolphins fans, Browns fans, have reason for optomsim next year (#2/#3 picks in draft this year, meaning second and worst teams.) But the 49ers are screwed for a very long time.

SmootSmack 01-17-2005 02:10 PM

What happened to all this talk of the 49ers making a big splash with their next head coach?

I think they rushed into this decision

I guess they think they're basically getting the next Jim Mora Jr. when of course they could have gotten JM Jr. himself had he not gone to Atlanta

SkinsRock 01-17-2005 02:51 PM

Maybe they couldn't get a bigger or better name...we did read that Williams declined to be considered for the job....maybe other coaches did the same.

hurrykaine 01-17-2005 03:01 PM
Maybe they couldn't get a bigger or better name...we did read that Williams declined to be considered for the job....maybe other coaches did the same.
Funniest part of that story (other than Nolan becoming head coach) is that Wade Phillips' has a dad named Bum Phillips. Bum? LMAO

Good luck, 49ers fans

SmootSmack 01-17-2005 03:10 PM

Bum Phillips was the Oilers coach during the Earl Campbell days. You've probably seen him a few times on NFL Films roaming the sidelines with his big cowboy hat

Im shocked you think Nolan has a defensive mind? :laughing2

Daseal 01-17-2005 06:13 PM

haha - well he concentrates on defense.. Not meaning he's some sort of Gregg Williams or anything.

Honestly, I'm just relieved they didn't take Blache. I think he may be the unsung hero of our defense.

jbcjr14 01-17-2005 06:52 PM

Wow, SF sucks for another 3 years before they realize Mike Nolan is just a flaming idiot and can his sorry ass.

SmootSmack 01-18-2005 01:13 PM

Apprently Nolan's dad is a former San Fran head coach-who used to have Steve Spurrier on his team

circle of life

SmootSmack 01-19-2005 08:47 PM

In other former skins' defensive coordinator news...

George Edwards has supposedly joined Nick Saban's staff in Miami. Not sure in what capacity

CRT3 01-19-2005 09:21 PM
Isnt Mike Nolan the guy who's always talking smack about the Skins??
Yes and he continued that smack at his news conference. George Michaels ran it on the 6:00 sports report. He put down the Skins. Not to sure if it was Norv he was putting down or the owner. But when he commented on all the great coaches he has worked with he mentioned everyone except Norv.

skinsguy 01-19-2005 10:46 PM

Wow...I at least want San Fran to be somewhat competitive when they play us...we had even taken their field goal kicker...lol

Seriously though....wow talk about a Franchise that has went down the tubes. I honestly used to be scared when I saw San Fran on the schedule for us! Now...I would love it if we played them twice a year!

It is so weird how things have changed....I used to make fun of New England because they were THE worst team in the league......and San Fran had the dynasty. Now, the roles are reversed....well if NE wins the SB this year too...

SmootSmack 01-19-2005 10:55 PM

Funny you say that, the roles have indeed been reversed

MTK 01-20-2005 08:52 AM

The 49ers were so good for so long it's strange to see them falling this hard. Kinda reminds me of another once proud franchise that was a great team in the 80's and early 90's. ;)

Redskins_P 01-20-2005 09:12 AM

Maybe the Danny can give Kraft a call, and ask for some advice..

sportscurmudgeon 01-20-2005 01:32 PM

Scott Ostler wrote his column in the SF Chronicle today on the hiring of Mike Nolan. Here is the last paragraph. This sort of sums up what hiring a new coach means to a franchise:

"Nolan was criticized as a coach when he coached bad players and was praised when he coached good players, so the 49ers, given the choice, should try to draft and sign good players."

TheMalcolmConnection 01-20-2005 01:50 PM

Ha! Very clever.:)

MTK 01-20-2005 03:28 PM

Hard to believe the same Mike Nolan that ran a swiss cheese defense here with us is now a head coach.

skinsguy 01-20-2005 04:13 PM
Hard to believe the same Mike Nolan that ran a swiss cheese defense here with us is now a head coach.
That's it! I'm putting my name in the hat! :D

TheMalcolmConnection 01-20-2005 04:21 PM

I call Defensive Coordinator! I'm a defensive mind! Pick me coach, I can play. I promise!

Daseal 01-20-2005 04:24 PM

They have a sign outside the practice facillity that they're paying 10 dollars an hour for D -linemen and WRs.

TheMalcolmConnection 01-20-2005 06:55 PM

Hahahaha... I'll keep my job, I get paid almost double that to sit on my ass at a desk and look at this rockin' website.

sportscurmudgeon 01-21-2005 11:07 AM

Matty:

That same defensive coordinator who had a "swiss cheese defense" here ALSO coached the Ravens' defense and they were VERY good. It's an example of better talent on the field making a coach look good and poorer talent on the field making a coach look bad.

My recollection is that Nolan was here in the "final throes" of the Norv Turner era just as Danny Boy bought the team and started making moves. That was not a team that overly-endowed with great players but they always seemed to be better than 5-11.

skinsguy 01-21-2005 11:13 AM

Actually, Ray Rhodes was our defensive coordinator during the "twilight" of Norv Turner's coaching career.

sportscurmudgeon 01-21-2005 04:35 PM

Nolan was also the Def Coord for the Giants when Parcells was there. Was he the DC for one of the Super Bowl versions of the Giants?

I thought Nolan was here in DC from 97-99...

CRT3 01-21-2005 04:44 PM
Actually, Ray Rhodes was our defensive coordinator during the "twilight" of Norv Turner's coaching career.
Actually you are quite wrong. Ray Rhodes lasted a year then went to the Broncos. He was hired the last year of Turners tenure and replaced Mike Nolan. Before that the twighlight guy was Ron Lynn. Now that was a true swiss cheese defense.

skinsguy 01-21-2005 05:05 PM

Hhhmmm...that's weird....I swear Ron Lynn had replaced Mike Nolan (because Nolan was brought in with Norv Turner), then it went Ray Rhodes(Skins' only playoff year), Schottenheimer(Marty's relative), Lewis, Edwards, then of course Williams.

Either way, I wasn't too far off in saying that Rhodes had came in toward the end of Norv Turner's coaching career with the Redskins because he had coached the defense in '99....the Redskins' only playoff year since Gibbs' first tenure.

CRT3 01-21-2005 07:38 PM

My fault, long day and twighlight for me for some reason meant the peak of Norv Turner. To much work today I guess. But the order of succession was Torgy Torgenson ~ Urich ~ Pettibon ~ Pecatillo ~ Lynn ~ Nolan ~ Rhodes ~ Kurt Schotinemer ~ Lewis ~Edwards ~ Williams

BIGREDSKINFAN63 01-23-2005 01:38 PM

yeah,he had a great defense here did'nt he?
