F... Lexus Xmas Commercials

Seriously, does this irk anyone else? Only two ways that these scenarios can work out. Either these mid twenties/early thirties couples are retardorich and can simply afford to drop ~$50k cash on a CHRISTMAS PRESENT or they are giving their special someone an assload of debt.

I just lol'd. I've been off from work 4 of the past 6 days, and the wife and I have watched a lot of football... and therefore seen plenty of these dumbass commercials. And she and I have said the same thing as you.

Who in the hell just gives someone a $50K car as an Xmas present? I mean, I could go out tomorrow and grab the wife a nice Lexus on a lease, but it's like, here ya go honey, have a sweet Lexus.... and oh yeah, we now have a $600/month car payment to tack on to the bills.

I mean what freaking demographic are you appealing to with these commercials? .05% of the world's population? These ads have driven me nuts for years.

Well I'm going shopping for a car for my wife this weekend. And I know she wants a Lexus.

We'll see. My signing bonus wasn't exactly Lexus worthy but whatever...but where the hell am I gonna find a ribbon big enough to wrap around a car?

Re: F... Lexus Xmas Commercials

well there goes Smoot ruining my theory. That said, I drive a new BMW and even being able to afford it, it's not something I would consider a "gift" per se. Big difference between "can afford" and it's a gift, nbd. If you're the primary breadwinner and can swing it, i guess that's one thing. if you're signing someone else up for the payment... not so much.

BTW- good luck w/ the new job, whatever it is. I'm assuming it's something along the lines of

Marketing folks usually know what they're doing. Take a look around the next time you drive in and around DC and note the badges on the vehicles nearby. $50k here, $35k behind you, $125k over there, etc etc

There is big money in the region and Lexus knows it. They probably don't sell too many cars that actually become spur of the moment gifts, but I bet they do sell a fair amount of cars because of the ads.

Wife sees the ad, says to husband "you should buy me a new Lexus, look how cute it is with the bow!".
Husband - "OK, maybe we'll go take a look this weekend"
Wife (Saturday evening) - "Thanks for the new car, honey!"

That is probably a bit dramatic to some extent, but not too far off reality.

The truely sad thing is the ribbon is an accessory that costs $600.

I guess it all depends on the Lexus. When I was car shopping a little over a year ago I looked at a few, and there were some available that weren't too much more expensive than the car I ended up getting (2010 Nissan Altima SL, bells and whistles included). I just preferred to get the "lesser" make, with more options. Leather, sunroof, power everything, GPS, Bose sound, etc etc, cost me the same per month as a Lexus with half the options.

But I'm not getting signing bonuses or anything, so you know, I suppose I could afford the gigantic ribbon for you... That's about it. :)

This. Marketing people are smart. These Lexus commercials have been coming on as long as I can remember. You don't keep a marketing campaign running for that many years if it's ineffective. The average NoVA household income is what, 120K? That means there are a lot of households above that...

The worst one now is the one when they are coming down the elevator and the annoying song is playing on the elevator PA system. That one sucked me in becasue I was like that song sounds familiar then they rush outside and there is the Lexus, I was like Noooooooooo I didn't see that coming. It was almost like a horror film;you see people on a fishing boat then you hear a familiar soundtrack in the background but are unsure of it until a giant shark jumps out of the water eats everyone; the Lexus car is the giant shark in that commercial.

A big part of the battle is brand awareness. Lexus has done such a good job with their commercials that when a lot of people think of luxury cars they don't think of Rolls Royce, Jaguar, or Cadillac but Lexus. And who can blame them, they're great cars. Mercades and BMW is pretty good with their commercials as well but Lexus is probably the first name that pops into a lot of peoples heads when they think of luxury vehicles.

Not that I have a great frame of reference but I've driven both BMW and Lexus and I absolutely loved driving the Lexus. If I ever make enough money I'll probably try to buy a Lexus sedan or a Hyundai Genesis if they're still a great bang for the buck luxury car by then.

Re: F... Lexus Xmas Commercials

I too say f Lexus commercials they suck. But im with d-bag in that they have changed the perception of their brand to more of a luxury car, but most people still dont see them in the ranks of BMW or Mercedes.

There is no chance i would ever drive a BMW or Mercedes or any other pure luxury car, i would just feel like a complete ass hole riding around all the time in one of those things. I would however rock a lexus and maybe an Acura just because i dont think either can ever been true luxury cars. They are in the sames ranks of Cadillac or Lincoln; just the flagship cars of a bigger brand. If money was no serisous issue i would still rock a top of the line toyota over a lexus as my daily driver all day. Id just feel like a d-bag (not you dirt) rockin a car with a fancy name as my primary vehicle. Its the same to me as the people who have fancy rims on their commuter car.

Regardless what kind of car brands you like or dont like or the image you want to present or dont want to present, i think these commercials are ridiculous. If someone gives me a car im probably gonna be happy, but only if it was a windfall and the other option is nothing.

But if my spouse just goes out and buys a car for herself without consulting me first im gonna be a little pissed, just like i think she should be pissed at me for bringing a car home without consulting her. "I just thought we talked about major purchases like this first honey?" If she buys one FOR ME im gonna be furious. Several girls have said the same thing to me when watching the commercial.

A car is a personal choice. There are tons of different shades of paint, a couple interior colors, tons of options, different tire packages, mud guards, all sorts of stuff. Maybe i just need to man up and realize that only guys make the decisions and that a wife has no say in something like a car, house or any other major financial decision. Does anyone know if they have this commercial but its the wife that buys the guy a car? That would just be ridiculous right?

My Dad is in the automobile business (currently VP of Service at a Jaguar/Land Rover dealership), but in years past the dealerships he's worked at had BMW, Lexus, Porsche, Audi, Lincoln, Mercury, so I've had the fortunate opportunity to have been in many makes and models of each brand and even driven a few. Aside from the 911 and 944 I rode in, my absolute favorite is the LS line from Lexus. To me, that car is absolutely stunning and they keep making it better and better. Some of the other models have their Toyota equivalents, and I would certainly opt for the fully loaded Toyota over the entry level Lexus. But the LS is just awesome to me.

When my grandfather could afford it, he bought a Cadillac DeVille because that's what he wanted. My DeVille is the LS. When I'm in my late 50s and I want to buy a car, that's what I hope to be able to afford.

saden - When the RX first came out, I thought it was cool. Then I rode in it, and it completely lost its luster. That thing sucks.

Oh, and yes the commercials are quite annoying...

I'm Honda for life. It looks more like a luxury car lately as their designs change from year to year and that's fine with me. The only thing I might switch Honda for is a Scion, Toyota or a Nissan.

Ultimately I want something thats gonna get me from point A to point B, look decent and for Godssake, doesn't cost an arm and a leg to repair.

This car was a hand me down. 2002. My grandfather passed away not long after and the car became mine. My financial position puts me nowhere near a position to pay a car note. So I'm stuck with this car until I get a better job or the damn thing dies.

Ummmm... I'm pretty sure Lexus is widely regarded as a leader in the luxury car market segment. It's really not that debatable.

You're mainstream luxury cars are BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Acura. I believe Lexus has a pretty good lead in market share amongst those four.

Maybe true, but I'd take a Mercedes or a Beamer 8 days a week over a Lexus or Acura. There's something special about the way a Benz and Beamer drive. A Lexus is a glorified Toyota, and an Acura is glorified Honda. Infiniti's don't really drive any better than Nissans. Nothing wrong with Honda, Nissan, and Toyota, but I feel like they just slap their top-shelf models with a different name and try to pawn them off as "luxury."

Audi, Benz, BMW... Still far ahead of the rest performance-wise, even if numbers say otherwise.

I've been looking into picking up a Lexus IS 350 (used of course). Friend had one for a while and it's a fun car. It's small and quick. The only bad thing about it is 1/4 inch of snow grounds you.

I had an Acura that I absolutely loved. At 250K the transmission died and I considered replacing it rather than getting my current car (Nissan Maxima... yuck. Stay away.)

Drove a BMW 3 series and hated it. It's an uncomfortable ride. The handling was pretty good, but if you're in the car for more than 30 minutes expect to be sore when you get out.

I've always loved the look and feel of Mercedes, but can't bring myself to face the maintenance bills on a German car. Lexus/Acura/Toyota/Honda cars are tanks and will run forever, haven't seen the same from German vehicles.

Your smart guy that is a dumb statement. You realize that if you go to Germany you will see BMW's and Benz's that are equivalent to say a Accord, Camary, Focus, etc.... Don't just look at their product line up in this country.

Plus this is a pretty hard car to compete against, I can't think of one BMW or Benz I take over this:
