Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Wow, that was quite the game. I definitely thought that we'd get our doors blow off. I was proud that we hung around and fought hard (channeling my inner Gibbs). Time to hand out some Scud Stickers....
Kyle Shanahan: I've been a big critic, but I tip my hat to the balanced game plan. If it weren't for the two turnovers (which weren't your fault), the Skins win that game. Nearly 500 yards of offense and 27 points. Helu/Royster: Both guys looked nice. Helu seems to get better every week. Skins receiving trio: I know Moss had the bobble at the end that turned into a pick, but overall he, Gaffney, and Stallworth made one big play after another. Patchwork O-line: Really held it together well for the most part all afternoon in both run and pass blocking. Looks like we've got two solid youngsters in Hurt and Smith. Who were your studs today? |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Everybody you just mentioned. Defense obviously wasn't on the same level as the offense today, but it's nice to see the Skins get into a semi-offensive shootout.
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
I always believed that if you spend so much time scouting a guy and drafting a guy, coach him up and play the guy. Wake up call for "Paperback" Williams.
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Good choices plus
Great INT by Josh Wilson in the end zone Brandon Banks with a better throw, as ugly as it was, than Beck ever made this season |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Oh and whatever coach it is, maybe it's Foerster (I don't know) that's been working with guys like Smith and Hurt during the season
|
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Helu continually impresses me so does Perry Riley is doing a good job complimenting our linebacker corp. Good Rex came out today and it was a shame we could not punch it in the endzone on the final moments of the game. And Kyle Shanahan really dug deep in his playbook this week because that reverse and throw was really something to see.

Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Tough loss... I thought the Skins played with a lot of heart today and showed they're not going to pack it in.
Helu, Stallworth, Gaffney, Grossman, Royster, Wilson, all get props from me. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Skin's OL did a great job today. That sack fumble was on Grossman.
Receivers did a good job today getting open, having said that, we played an awful secondary. London played like...well great as usual. Riley looked great, he's definitely better than Rocky, and has a lot of speed to him. Moss played great for 59 minutes. Brandon Banks played well. Cofield and Bowen did great making NE one dimensional with passing only, by shutting down the running game. Josh Wilson did a nice job in coverage today. Gano made all his kicks. Shanahan called some great plays today, then again we played the worst defense in the league. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Love the effort today.
Rex- did great after the fumble in the endzone, he gets an assist by big Mo Hurt, but still... Kyle- great balance today. Helu and Royster really shined today. Oline did well. |
Helu - team record today
Offense as a whole- 27 points Ms/Ks- good calling today Banks- amazing play, one of the best in the NFL this year Gaffney- leads the team in TD catches |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
The whole team, really. I know I've said this before but when Rex is in the whole team just seems to fight harder. Big prop to Wilson for his pick and the play calling on offense. I expected the typical three and outs with deep bombs the first time we got down.

Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Kyle, great game called today. It's amazing how when the OL provides decent blocking and Rex plays like an NFL QB you seem to be a better coach. Reality is that Kyle is a damn good coordinator and when we have the talent at the right positions we will see days like today a little more often.
Mike, for the 2011 draft class. We saw a glimpse of what's possible from this class once they mature. Kerrigan didn't have his best game but we've seen plenty from him to know what we have. Jenkins and Hankerson showed flashes in limited action. Helu & Royster have shown well. Gomes, Paul, Hurt and Neild have all played well in their roles and above draft slot. Smith played decently and we can get to see what he's got over the next 3 weeks. |

Willie Smith just might be our future RT, I like him a lot, Hurt is getting better too, although he struggled today. |

Yeah don't forget Rex s TD he gave away.
Skins have had 7 QBs start since 2004 ouch and that's y we suck |

Way to go Smoot! You're spot on. Same for Josh Wilson. Was this his first INT this season? |

Honestly, Hurt and Smith are no better long term than backups probably but that's fine. That is what we've sorely lacked for years, young, quality depth. Hurt hasn't embarrassed himself since he's been in the lineup. He's played like a rookie late round pick. Same can be expected of Smith. If he shows well over the next 3 games, we can go into 2012 comfortable with young depth on the OL which we haven't had forever. |

Put it this way, Smith is already better than Locklear and I bet he's also better than Brown. I don't see Brown or Locklear here next year, as for Smith I've been following him since training camp and he seems to be a solid sleeper FA pickup. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Everyone on offense played very well but lets also remember that NE has one of the worst defenses I think I've seen in a while. They're just horrible on that side of the ball.

Hopefully this will be a lesson for the front office. Don't go trading away anymore draft picks for damaged goods. |

I would agree, but we've also looked terrible against supposedly bad defenses in the past. |

That's because we didn't have Helu establishing our running game, which in turn establishes play action. ;) |

Wait, Wait, Wait, So establishing the run sets up play action?? |

The point is that we haven't been doing that consistently well until #29 took the reins. |

Wait, wait, wait, wait, we're supposed to run the ball? But when Kyle had Schaub and A. Johnson, all he did was pass the ball! LOL. |

But I won't knock the toss pplays Kyle kept dialing up. Risky but, paid dividends. Even setup the Banks TD. |

Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
What's with this Redskins team? Why does it seem every time there's a football game, when the defense is on the offense is off? And when the offense is clicking the defense can't stop the opposing offense?
The defense lost this game. Kerrigan and Orakpo didn't get one paw on Tom Brady. DeAngelo Hall and the safeties couldn't contain New England's passing attack. My hats off to Josh Wilson on picking Brady in the back of the endzone. I liked how the young offensive line played together. With the exception of the sack-fumble-TD in the endzone, they played well. Moss, Stallworth, and Gaffney resembled the Posse out there today. And Roy Helu- I can't give enough props to Helu for how well he ran the football today. He did an excellent job. |

think we found our rb. helu just keeps getting better every week. |

He's been able to handle much more of a load than I expected him to. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Awesome job by the oline. Helu looks more and more like he could be something real special. Riley is nasty. Probably our best offensive game this year.
Also i cant be more impressed with how the teamed played with the season over and against a non-divisional team that had already pretty much secured their division (we couldnt play spoiler to anything). Great effort. Although i think this may have been the first time NE had ever won in Washington? |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Well, I expected a loss. Planned to not watch the game because I figured it would be a blow out. Got home around 1pm, started lunch, and to avoid.... putting up all the X-Mas lights and items outside I started watching the game.
To me this was the perfect game. I might be a terrible fan but as much as I'd like to see them win, and I thought they might, I'm happy we have not ruined a draft position. So for me this game was a win/win. Game was kept close, showed we could have won the game against an elite team, showed our backups can step up, and played flawless up until the end. I was happy and still am. |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
I think Mo Hurt and Willie Smith have acquitted themselves well thus far and will probably earn a roster spot next year. For what we're paying and gave up for Brown, he's been a disappointment.
One thing I'm starting to come to terms with is that Rex will be on this roster next season one way or another. No matter the scenario, I don't see how the Redskins part ways with him just yet. We'll see. ***************************************************** Perry Riley has been as much a surprise on defense, for me at least, as much as Helu has been on offense. He's always around the ball and it's growing into a punishing tackler. London Fletcher will still be playing by the time my daughter graduates from college. Jabar Gaffney. Liking this guy more and more each week. I could see him and Hank opposite each other next season. Evan Royster. Wasn't a stud yesterday, but do you get the feeling he ain't going back to the practice squad? |
Re: Scud's Studs (Week 14 vs. Patriots)
Tyler Polumbus.
Absolutely correct! Smith and Hurt played well yesterday; Polumbus played better than they did... |
