Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
What say we have a new thread! We've got one about NFL offseason FA/Trade Rumors and Moves
Here's one on the Redskins Let's start with the news that Fred Davis has been tagged |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
I really hope that means they are close to a deal with Fletcher... He would have been my runner up for the franchise tag this year had we not given it to Davis.
|
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Davis being tagged is a good thing, but I have no doubt we'll get a deal done with Fletcher.
|
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
I think this spells the end of Landry.

It's getting to the point where I want to just wish him the best of luck and let him go in a seperate direction. But then we have to start asking the question of who will replace him? Gomes is not starter material, Doughty is best suited to be a backup, and we really don't have anyone currently on the roster capable of starting at strong safety. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
What does this have to do with Landry?

I suspect so too, but it worries me that we haven't struck a deal yet. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
I never really considered the possibility that Davis wouldn't be here this year, so this is more methodology than news to us.
Lots of work to do this offseason. Two of the four top players on the defense can now test the market. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
So what's the word with the Landry situation, I imagine we are letting him walk...but are we even discussing a deal?
|

a week or so ago, either rich campbell or chris russell reported on espn980 that the skins and landry were talking about a contract. earlier in the offseason, i felt like we should just move on, but really, if we let him walk, who are we going to replace him with? i think, if the sides can work something out, then we should. when healthy, landry is our best player. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Does franchising Davis spell the end for Cooley?
|
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Does franchising Davis spell the end for Cooley?
No. Cooley had a conversation on the Lavar and Dukes Show about this in January and he said that he already talked with Shanahan and they want him back. I don't know if they'll want him to restructure his contract, however. I feel like that is a distinct possibility. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Does franchising Davis spell the end for Cooley?
No. They would like to have the option to run a 2 tightend formation. I hope we bring Landry back. This is weak draftclass for Safety and CB. |

Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
I think we need to renegotiate contract with whoever we can Cooley, Hall anyone that can add more cap space.

Why? I thought we were in the top two or three in terms of cap space. |

Yeah but I've got BIG plans for this team, if we're giving up all those draft picks for RG(3) then we need to hit FA hard. |

I would say the only big draft picks we are going to lose in this trade up are our second rounder this year and our first rounder next year. Anything from the 3rd round on is a crap shoot in terms of success in the NFL. I think we can acquire two starting caliber FAs this year's and next year's offseason. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
I wouldn't go all out on a contract for Landry. Yeah he's pretty good, but he's very replaceable, the only problem is that what, do you expect Gomes to be a starting SS? Do you think that OJ is even that good, because he played poorly last year. Really we need 3/4 of our secondary rebuilt SS, FS, and CB (Dhall).

The safety position has been a huge problem ever since we lost Sean Taylor. A healthy Landry and Atogwe would be fine, but Atogwe is getting older (will be 31 when the season starts) and who knows what will happen with Landry. Despite of what people think, we could survive with the CBs we have now (it may be ugly though), but not with the Safety problems we have been having for a while. I would rather see the team spend money on a safety and adding depth at corner, than the other way around. Although, I must say that an improved offense may even help us overcome some of the defensive deficiencies we had last season. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Perrish Cox got off his rape trial and is now an eligible free agent that can sign with whom ever. I bring this up because the redskins put a claim on him once denver cut him.
|
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
the FA safety crop this year is... not good.
|
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
So Gano and Kory L tendered, but not Westbrook
|

So the new Westbrook is probably Kevin Barnes. The new nickel corner is either Josh Wilson or a FA.. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Our secondary is not organized. I bet we spend a few picks there if we dont trade picks.

Cap room doesn't mean you overpay guys for that aren't producing up to their salary. Do you think Bill Gates pays a janitor 400k a year? Nope. Why not? He has the money to do so if he chose. It's about doing smart business which is something we have long neglected. Cooley is going to have to restructure to stay, which I'm quite positive he will. He knows that Fred Davis is the #1 now, so he'll be a great guy coming off the bench or in the 2 TE set. |

Ugh.. Barnes is the least athletic skill position player outside of Reed Doughty I've seen in a while. He's a stiff. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Yeah it looks like LL will not be here next season
|

That does not bother me at all. I think we add a couple of CBs in FA and the draft. We got to hit on one. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
I really don't want to talk about Doughty. I know some of you guys really like him, but I can't believe we haven't tried to replace that spot in the last couple of years. He is a fair safety to some extent, but by no means a good player.

My comments were in response to a comment that made it sound like we were over the cap and desperately needed to restructure a whole bunch of contracts to get under the cap. Now, Cooley has had injuries that have affected his play, hopefully he's healthy and can go back to his old self. He's 29, will be 30 by the time the season starts, so it is not like we are talking about some over the hill guy. While yes, I am sure the team would like if he restructured and it may happen, however, I personally don't think is a must situation. It's funny though, when a player gets a bit older and the team wants to move on from them, we praise the teams for making a sound business decision. Yet when a player who outperforms his contract and wants to get more money, we say "shut up and just play ball". |

You and I probably wouldn't even have an opinion on Doughty if Landry, Kareem Moore, and Atogwe have been reasonable healthy over the past three/four seasons. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
That's why I would assume there would be a reason to find a replacement. You know he will play with the guys in front of him.

I would rather they find a replacement for the guys in front of him. Although, the coaches seem to have faith in him for some reason, he seems to be going into the Rabach zone (a player that was kept from year to year despite their poor abilities). |

>~ yay.....should have gotten the surgery~< Great personality, can take a hit can dish out a hit..... when he's in position and not behind the play. Come on folks, he never could cover as a FS and when he was shift closer to the LOS and basically used as a SS he couldn't cover there either. When your supposed to be the last man or last obstical how are you going to end up behind the play chasing it down half the time? He's like that cousin everyone has that you love cause he's family but some how seems to screw up occasionally. Then to decide your not going to have surgery in hopes you'll come back 100%, but didn't. Then knowing you had a bad season your going to decide not to have surgery yet again and more then likely come back no more healthier then before? Bye. Good luck. Hope we don't have to play against you but if we do we will put you in situation where you have to cover someone. |

A healthy LL has a high value, IMO. But I doubt that he'll stay healthy unless he has surgery to repair his achilles problem which apparently has not healed completely using alternative healing methods. An injured LL on the bench has no value. I think I'd offer him a multi-year deal contingent on his having surgery on his achilles. If he again refuses to have the surgery, I'd probably offer him a one-year deal at a lower salary as long as there is a chance that he might get well enough to play by continuing non-surgical treatments. If he won't accept the one-year deal, then he can sign elsewhere. I'd be reluctant to just let him go without attempting to work out a deal. |

I am not one of those people. I have always thought that players should be able to get out of their contracts if they over perform. Why? Because the owners can cut them at will without having to pay them. Not sure why players even agree to such standards in the CBA. If a team can release a player during a contract and not have to pay him, then a player should be able to void his contract when he isn't paid appropriately. |

gomes, moore, atogwe, horton, maybe barnes to an extent... we've tried to replace him, but everyone else is either worse or gets hurt. |
