Rogain
Guys I need some advice. I'm 25 and starting to see my hair thin in a few places, is rogain the solution? Does it actually work?
|
Re: Rogain
I had a friend who used it, and basically, yes it works, but if you ever stop using it, you'll be bald very very quickly.
I think the more permenant thing is hair transplantation, but i really know very little about this, so i don't have much else to offer. |

if i ever start losing hair, i'm going to embrace it w open arms. bald and fat is how i'd like to die

I always said that too... But I'm only 25 lol |
Re: Rogain
Yeah I'm only 23 and my hair is already starting to thin. I figure it's going to happen eventually because my dad is bald and you can already start to see the signs, but I didn't think it would start to happen this early.
People have told me to check out Rogaine, Hair Club for Men, etc. but I honestly don't want to use a product that will make me go bald if I ever stop using it. I think when the time comes I'm just going to shave my head and embrace it. I'd rather be bald than look like my coworker, who still rocks (note: I use 'rocks' very loosely here) a combover. |
Re: Rogain
mooby, im with you. when it happens, break out the razor and shave it up tight. but im also 50, and sporting a semi full head of hair
|
Re: Rogain
I went through the same thing in my early 30s. I just learned to accept it, now I just keep my hair buzzed down short.
If you can hold on for another 5 years or so, a real cure might be on the way BBC News - Clue to male baldness discovered |
Re: Rogain
So basically you'll end up with less hair than you started with?
No. It's just that you need to keep using Rogaine to sustain the hair growth. If you stop using it, all the hair that would have fallen out by that point will fall out in a short time frame. So you'll go from nice head of hair to as bald as you would have been without Rogaine in a very short time, which is an emotional shock. A buddy of mine had hair transplantation done a few years ago, looks good. |
Re: Rogain
Just shave it and own who you are. Women like confidence. It's sexy. ;)

It's a real bummer skinsfan, but unless you want to make sure you're doing Rogaine daily, pay a few thousand for hair transplants, owning it is the best you're going to do. I wish I had a full head of hair again, but until something like the link above happens, just going with the zero guard. :) That being said, after reading this article, I'll be pretty pissed if this thing can totally stop baldness, but won't be able to regrow hair! |
Re: Rogain
I used to have a really bad widows peak like Ed Munster bad then my hairline receded and good bye widows peak!
Honestly just embrace it and keep your hair short especially the sides. I honestly think old guys with a full set of cotton white hair look ridiculous. |

I hear ya, but in the grand scheme of things, it could be a lot worse. |

Lol that helps |
Re: Rogain
Right now I rock a fade with enough hair on top to not look like it's thinning itself out, but I see the makings of a bald spot starting on the back of my head. I figure I've got another 2-5 years left before it becomes noticeable enough that I'll just get rid of it all.

I can say from experience that bald and fat is the way to go. Embrace it and be yourself. |
Re: Rogain
My hair has been thinning ever since I was 18. Twenty years later I still have hair. Never worried about it.
|
Re: Rogain
I'm 47 and my hair started falling out when I was around 30. My friends wife was a beauty supply rep that sold shampoo and conditioner that helped with hair loss. I can't remember the name of the stuff but she gave me all the samples I needed and I noticed less hair falling out. She left that job and quit using the stuff.

Re: Rogain
I'm blessed with a full head of thick hair, but my issue has been the gray. I have been graying ever since my twenties, but it's gotten bad with my beard / goatee. Unless I do Just For Men, the hair on my chinny chin chin is almost completely white. No salt and pepper, just salt! As far as my hair on the head, I don't mind the gradual graying...my fiancee' thinks its sexy. But I cannot stand for my beard to be complete white on the chin while the mustache is still somewhat dark with some gray in it. I figured I'd keep coloring it by the time I hit 40, then I'll let it go and grow old gracefully.

LOL,Sounds like were in the same boat.My coworkers give me hell about using the Just for men in my beard:)Especially sometimes if you leave it in too long and it turns a lot darker then your hair:doh: Back to hair loss, some people look good bald, some dont.I dont think I would. If I lost my hair I would be a member of the hairclub |

When I first noticed mine thinning years ago, I looked into this and there are some MAJOR sexual issues that can happen with this. They're rare, but basically if you're like any red-blooded man, the thought of not being able to enjoy sex is not worth the risk (albeit small). |
Re: Rogain
Funny about the gray is my co-worker who is 2 years younger then me has all his hair but is very salt and pepper. I don't have any gray but my hair is thinning out.
Our boss's boss always refers to hi mas one of the old guys and always groups me in with the young bunch at meetings. It is kind of funny. I guess the gray makes you look older then the thinning. |

I do the exact same thing. I've embraced it. I hung on as long as I could (plus my wife wouldn't let me shave it before our wedding), but as soon as I got back from our honeymoon in June of 2010, off went the hair. I buzz it down with a zero guard on the clippers every other day. I'm fortunate that I have a nicely shaped head- not lumpy or bumpy. I actually get compliments on my shaved head, so I'm cool with it. I guess I better be, because it's the look I'm gonna roll with the rest of my life. |
Re: Rogain
Lift weights and shave your head.
That's my plan for the day it happens to me. Unless you have thousands of dollars to throw at it, it's a losing battle. |

Re: Rogain
Hey I started going gray at 21 or 22.
25 and I've got the makings of a skunk streak in the works. I'll be looking like the black Bonnie Raitt in no time. |

Re: Rogain
I was in an accident that required 2 reconstructive surgeries on my face and temple. In order to minimize the incisions on the face the surgeons made incisions in my hairline. I have one going from the bottom of my ear lobe to over the top of my head so they could pull my face back a little. I also have one that goes almost perpendicular to it on my temple. When the doctors went over what they were doing they told me i have to take propecia for the rest of my life…..
Ive looked into this stuff pretty good and this would be my recommendation. Don’t do rogain, at least to start off with. Rogain acts like a fertilizer or steroid of sorts for hair. It doesn’t actually prevent or stop balding, rather it just stimulates hair and makes it grow. So at some point it will wear off, simply because you wont have any hair follicles to stimulate. Youre purely delaying the inevitable. Propecia actually stops what causes male balding, dht. By preventing your body from building up dht it stops the killing of hair follicles. Theres also Advodart which does the same thing as Propecia but only better. From everything ive heard the most effective course of action is to get on a pill first to prevent balding and only use rogain as a supplement if you need to in later years. However starting early is the most important part, as theres nothing out there that will really regrow hair, most things just prevent more loss. Whats funny about rogain, propecia, avodart and anything else out there is that they were all discovered completely accidental. They don’t even really know what causes baldness, they think in most cases its dht but no one really knows for sure. My suggestion would be to skip the rogain and try and get on propecia or avodart if you have insurance. Ask your doctor for finsteride (generic propecia) which is 10x cheaper. Avodart is expensive and is only available as a name brand and probably will be for some time. I think the sexual side effects are more for old timers. I havent noticed a thing, and I don’t think younger people will because of how much testosterone we have. My plan is to take avodart or propecia for as long as I need to, with the hope that in 10-20 years from now they’ll discover a cure for balding. I mean 50+ percent of US males go bald??? That’s 25% of our population. The economics to find a cure is waaaaayyy to strong for it not to happen, well, unless you know we get socialized healthcare. |

One of the side affects can be loss of libido- and I had that side affect big time. Like couldn't even get it up sometimes. And shortly after stopping the propecia I was back to normal sexually. So yeah, I'd rather be bald and viril than have a full head of hair and be, well, you know, limpy. |

Re: Rogain
@ GM - i guess it adjust depends on the person then. I assumed younger people wernt as likely to be affected.
@ Monkey/buster - Definitely a scary thought. I look completely normal but whats funny is my surgery side has become my "good side". My muscle control on the surgery side isnt as good as the other side, and smiling real big or winking all the way on the one side of my face is kind of hard. I thnik the restricted movement may have had a similar effect as botox. @ Matty - i sure as hell hope so. Propecia and Avodart were originally created for BPH (when you’re going problem becomes a growing problem). One of the side effects was that these drugs also stopped hair loss and regrew hair. Minoxidil (rogain) was discovered in the same manner. Theres also nizoral that was made for dandruff but happened to regrow hair. Its really amazing that no one can figure it out, but people keep stumbling on stuff. Hopefully that article is right. @ Skinsfan - Ill add another reason i wouldnt use rogain. Its a liquid you have to put on your head and leave in. Think about that. Its a lot of work, its probably messy and you probably cant have white pillow cases or sheets, its just nasty sounding. The vast majority of doctors will prescribe a guy propecia without issue. He (if youre going to a female doctor that’s your first mistake) may ask if you’ve tried rogain, if so say yes but youre allergic to one of the ingredients or that it makes you break out or that you don’t like putting grease on your head every day. If you say no he will probably say try rogain first and see me again in a month or 2 (you know he gets paid each visit, right?). If cost is an issue think about being ugly, lonely AND bald for the rest of your life, albeit with a few extra dollars, or just ask for generic finasteride (probably even cheaper than rogain). If your doctor wont let you take a 5mg pill of generic finasteride daily, you can break it easy into thirds to appease him. However, if you live with any female that could get pregnant, even if by accident, id highly advise against this as finasteride is known to cause birth defects. Splitting pills can create dust and stuff, and while it may be very unlikely, its definitely not worth taking any chance whatsoever on. |
