Niles Paul... Tight End?
Cooley, Paul, and the Redskins TE Situation.
"Coach gave me a call earlier this offseason and asked me how I'd feel about switching to tight end," Paul said in a phone interview Friday morning. "I told him, 'I'll play wherever you want me.' I've done everything I've been asked, and I'll keep doing it. I'm excited about the position change. I'm excited that coach has enough respect for me that he'd call me to ask me what I thought about it." Interesting... I like it. He was on the field A LOT last year to have only a couple of catches... means they loved his blocking at the WR spot... He basically go from an average speed WR to a fast TE who can block. BTW.. Paul's listed at 6'1, 224lbs... Davis is 6'4, 258lbs, and Cooley is 6'3, 255lbs... so he'd need a little more weight maybe? Also.. one of things pointed out in this article is Cooley's cap number and how if Paul can play TE, they'd have more leverage in renegotiating Cooley's contract (6.23 mil this year) or cutting him all together. |

Feels right. He's put on 10 and has a few more to go. No more than 238 they said. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
I just think its really awesome. Im pulling for Paul to make the transition and then to have a positive impact. Shanny does not keep it boring around here.

this year is going to be fun |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
I think he will be better there. He isn't super fast or big for a receiver but he has good blocking and a different combination and would probably do better at tight end.

Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
how much is saved if cooley is cut, $2M?
|
We already have a legit te in Davis but hey more weapons

Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
how much is saved if cooley is cut, $2M?
It saves just over $2 million to cut him now. The real gain is in 2013, where he no longer counts any of the $5.8 million.
The other options are to keep him at his $6 mil figure this year and then only get a fraction of that cap back next year if he is released, or to release him post June 1 and save something close to $4 million this year. But then there is a small (between 1 and 2 million) cap charge next year. Or keep him until his contract expires, obviously. |

Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
i think cooley was hurt, not that he magically lost it last year, so i'd rather keep him and see how he is this season.
move is kinda meh for me. he was basically just a blocker last year and it looks like he'll kinda be doing the same thing this year. I don't think blocking LBs or DEs is going to be an easy as the DBs he was stuffing last year though. |

That is one strike away from a 1 year suspension. Insurance policy?? |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Never seen such a small TE. I hope it works out! I think the plan is Cooley is gone next year, and Paul is the backup.

Shannon Sharpe. Height: 6-2 Weight: 228 |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Some years back the Redskins had an H-back/TE named Craig McEwen from 1987-1991 and was a pretty good receiver. He was 6-1, 220.
|
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
LOVE to see them thinking out of the box a bit....
Cooley has had his share of health probs and there is no guarantee that Fred can keep his head outta' the..........weed bag. Good security move.....who knows. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Paul was prob our best blocking WR and played some TE last year too. Doubt we see him in any sort of bunch.. but he'll be a good threat at the position.. could keep him around longer.
|
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
I'd hate to see it, but Dealing Cooley may get us an additional pick or two if we decide to deal him. His cap is $3.?? million? No too high but he may be willing to rework the deal in a trade. If Paul is working out, then it may be the writing on the wall for Cooley. Hate to see it, yet another jersey down the shitter!!

And I like to think Aaron Hernandez is pretty damn good too. His athleticism makes him unguardable with Gronk out there. Mayb we could use fred davis and Paul the same way. |

If we're going to do this, we need to hang onto him for at least another year. Someone else already posted this, but his value is at an all-time low. If he can come back healthy, he's going to be a steal for someone else. Sure, our TE depth is great with him and Davis, but you trade Cooley, Paul doesn't work out and all it takes is a joint for us to suddenly have a nightmare at TE. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
maybe we'll take a look at another byron chamberlain

Aaron Hernandez 6'1 240. Niles isnt that far behind at 6'1 234. If he gets to 238, thats even better. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Its hard to feel good about this move. I was never sold on NP. Other than that big hit (rams game punt coverage?) he's a decent WR that can seal an edge- so what?! It's going to be totally different on the line blocking/protecting our future hopes. Maybe it will pan out to have a multi purpose WR/special teams guy/ 3rd or 4th string TE and create an extra spot on the roster but he's too small in my mind and should have been an OL pick instead.
|
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Also, I've always thOught Moss to be the best blocking WR on the team.

We're not asking him to be Donny Warren. |

What? He has delivered some good downfield blocks with his speed.. but I mean blocking by design. Moss has never really been asked to occupy a defender to get somebody else open. Don't get to see the receiver blocks on rushing as much. |

True and true. We should've traded Cooley a few seasons back. But that's another debate. Point is Davis isn't a guarantee and Cooley is coming off injury. Doesn't hurt to get Paul in the mix when the WR position is relatively saturated. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Sure, this could allow him to have some impact outside of ST and make the team, but I'm not expecting him to suddenly become Aaron Hernandez. Unless he's been training with Laron Landry, he's going to be a major liability in blocking and Ware and Osi/Pierre-Paul will eat him for lunch.
Anyway, another pass-catching TE-hybrid would be a reasonable place for him with a hobbled Cooley and a high Fred Davis. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Do you think the Skins are eyeing a WR since they're getting a head start with playing Paul at TE? A TE may be available in the draft.

I think they have their eyes set on a few wide receivers. But the wide receivers Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan have in mind are of course not 1st or 2nd round prospect. Nick Toon is one WR they are salivating over and perhaps A.J. Jenkins of Illinois. Ryan Broyles of Oklahoma is another value in the 4th or 5th rounds. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Definitely interesting and ill be routing for him. I wonder if Logan Paulson is done here? Ive thought hes done pretty decent.
I really hope it has nothing to do with Cooley's contract though. Using a guy to reduce another guys contract just seem like bad business practices. Hopefully its purely because they think Paul has a real future at the spot. Tight End has been the most evolving or changing position over the last 5 years or so. It doesnt seem to have much to do with all the rule changes either. Im sure well see some more cool stuff with te's over the next few years . |

I see no need for nick toon, he's slow and is a flanker, not a slot guy. |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
I'm just not ready to see guys like Cooley or Moss go. If they do cut either one, they need to be very gracious, do something like the Iggles did when they cut Trotter & Reid held a press conf. & spoke highly of him.
I still think both of those guys are valuable to the team, just a somewhat educated guess. |

im a bit confused reading your post. you start off by making it seem like youre just offering an opinion. however, you definitively stated thay are salivating over Toon. are you just offerering educated options or do you have inside info? |
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Paulsen fits the 3rd TE roll and can step it up when he has the chance. I'm not crazy about the racoon-tail hair on Madden though.
|
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
One thing to keep in mind about Paul he's not 6'1. He's 6'0 3/4.

I don't have inside 411 at all. I'd be surprised if the Redskins took a wide receiver anywhere in the draft because we are good at receiver for now. Unless Kendall Wright is available in the 3rd round, and since Wright and RG3 have chemistry already, then he's the only wide out I see the Redskins taking. Anyways, a lot of what I said about Nick Toon being drafted by the Redskins comes from a few mock drafts that I saw weeks back. |

Lorenzo Alexander also working out at TE!

Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
^ Just about to post that. So it sounds like TE is a need, and that Shanahan doesn't trust Fred Davis, if he has two non TE's working at TE whether its a complete switch or if it is an emergency role.
|
Re: Niles Paul... Tight End?
Sounds like it's just an emergency type of deal.
