Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
I had some interest earlier in the offseason regarding the Redskins use of paper for their playbooks or whether they had transitioned to IPads like everybody else, but nobody knew the answer to the question. Well Kirk Cousins has done me a solid and revealed the answer, with courtesy to Rich Campbell for being on my feed.
“@Rich_Campbell: Combos nicely w/ this story by @JeffDarlington: http://t.co/VPOgk95y RT @KirkCousins8: Love having an iPad playbook. Makes life a lot easier” Also in that tweet for anyone interested is an article by Jeff Darlington about teams transitioning to IPad playbooks. It's a good read, and I'm very curious to see how this will translate to our on-field performance this season. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Im sure Angry Bird scores will go through the roof!

Good stuff mooby. Very interesting.

Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Agreed. Any word of RGIII signing? I know thats totally off topic lol
|
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
The convenience factor is definitely high for the players, outside of that I'm not sure how this impacts anything on the field really. Cool nonetheless.

Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
It's ironic. It makes them more and less vulnerable to theft. On one hand they're most likely being tracked with GPS unlike a paper playbook which can be handed off or copied without leaving a trace. On the other hand you find the right guy that can work a computer and in one fell swoop someone can hack into an opposing teams playbook. Sure you still need someone to decipher it but it's an odd trade off in terms of risk.

That was my first thought when I saw that teams were moving to digital. I can definitely see Jerry Jones and Belichek hiring hackers to steal playbooks, lol. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Hacking the entire playbook won't help an opposing defense very much.
They would need the actual gameplan and I doubt any team would put their gameplan on the team groupshare Ipad. The gameplan will probably be handed out or told via dictation in position group meetings and the players then look up the corresponding plays in their playbooks. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Not only that, I'm sure that they have enterprise password protection (forced) on all of them. Pretty awesome.

I have been sitting around checking all day and have yet to hear anything new. Does anyone, Matty, SS or anyone else know if they are any closer? I sure hope we aren't waiting til Luck signs, that could be almost 2 weeks seeing that the Colts don't report until near the end of the month. |

I wonder if coaches will be able to pull up stats on how much it was used. Like if a RB keeps missing protections will they go to him with the number of times he looked at the playbook. As for hacking, maybe they don't put the gameplan on there but a hacker could easily find the patterns of what the qb or RB is looking at in the days leadiing up to the game. |

Sure. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Paper playbooks could be "hacked," too, by thieves. The difference to me is that there is no way to remotely wipe a paper playbook clean. So while there is the possibility of information theft with the tablets, they appear to be much safer, whether the game plan is included or not.

Maybe they wouldn't connect any of these Ipads to the internet...

Oh sorry, I thought it was just because it was more convenient, and "interactive". In fact I still don't understand why the internet aspect is a real plus... |

It's so they can download film and any other updates. Plus they can use the calendar for meetings, etc. |

yes but I'd rather have my schedule hacked than my whole playbook... anyway, let's hope they really have the security angle covered |

But the playbooks need to be internet-ready so that new plays can be down/uploaded. Part of the point of this setup is to allow wireless transmission of playbook components. |

okay, at the beginning I really thought it was just a "let's get modern and cool" stuff, didn't see the "permanent improvement of the playbook" aspect of it. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
From the article:
This summer, in a move that surely caused a few collective head shakes across the NFL, Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams tweeted a photo of his iPad that displayed several of the team’s defensive plays from the digital playbook. Really, it had nothing to do with the iPad itself since Williams could have just as easily snapped a photo and tweeted the picture from a hard-copy playbook. But the incident was nonetheless the type of issue that creates hesitation for any old-school coach having a difficult time embracing this new-school world. Is it totally rational? No. Is it slightly nearsighted? Yes. But this is new technology, so it is reasonable to wonder about all of those security-type questions. Most everyone who is currently using them, however, says there’s nothing to fear. “What if a player gets traded?” Brown said. “What if an iPad gets left on a plane? What if someone hacks into the playbook? I understand the question But there’s plenty of security in place.” In fact, as several people explained, the iPad might actually be more secure than a hard-copy playbook, particularly those issued by teams like the Broncos. Information can be wiped from an iPad from anywhere, which means a waived player could have his playbook erased before he ever even reaches the coach’s office to get the bad news. “The big difference and benefit we have now is, there’s no security on a personal iPad,” Boxer said. “Now, we have a COBOLT Device Management system so we can secure what’s out there on the devices. It’s all highly secure. We can wipe an iPad from anywhere in the world, and it now has two passwords on it. It has a four-digit keycode and password required to access the actual app.” As for the prospect of hacking? The encryption currently being used to secure the iPads on a remote level is equivalent to the military grade. So while the idea of SpyGate II might be something nobody will want to discount, it hasn’t created enough concern to steer most teams away from the technology at this point. Not considering the security currently being utilized. |

Yeah, and im sure Sony and Amazon had the security angle covered too. Fact is, you put the playbook on the IPad, and disable the hardware rendering it uncapable of transferring data or connecting to the internet, and just upload the playbook onto the IPad, and just use the IPad for the playbook, nothing else. Just having it on an ipad makes it easier to browse through the different plays and protections. Ultimately, though, they could write a program which would brick the tablet if someone tried to transfer the playbook data or connect to the internet with it. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
So, my son's middle school issued iPads to all the students last year (actually 5th through 8th graders got them). They are in the first year of the program, and the teachers think they've got it all locked down tight. Mid March, the program administrator sends an email that all 8th grade iPads have been pulled back until new security can be installed. Turns out that some of the 8th graders were smarter than the teachers.
I laughed when the email came out. That doesn't really relate to the Skins getting the iPad, but I thought it was pretty dang funny. |

I think you'd probably have a better chance of a player leaving his playbook in a hotel room or somewhere else than you would someone hacking the iPad. It certainly can happen, but I think it's a pretty safe way to go. |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Seriously?
A franchise worth $1.56 billion dollars. Worth more than some countries. And we're worried that they can't afford internet security? The playbook is the key to their game, their financial success. They will protect it with all the means possible. And remember - there's no way to prevent a player who wants to give the playbook out. Even when a player leaves, they'll remember most of the plays. For example, Peyton Manning remembers every single Colts play, and can draw each out himself without any paper or electronic playbook. And paper playbooks can easily be copied / scanned / photographed. From the article, the security seems relatively advanced to me. Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
You can regulate its use. As far as studying game film, the device should only be supplemental. If you bring in disciplined guys, you don't have to worry about them studying; be it on tablets (computerized or stone). That will always be a challenge for coaches, teachers, managers, etc.

Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
I wonder if the NFL will transition to allowing them (or similar tech) to be used on the sidelines during games to view photos, even watching 'tape' of previous plays, etc. The possibilities are endless but the league has to give permission first.

All the issues mentioned in the article are the team's fault. If they didn't put firewalls and restrictions on the iPads that would allow a user to access the full internet and social media sites while on their internal network that's dumb. I'm not a technology geek but I'd have to think you can restrict use to solely the content you want to be viewed and accessed, right? |
Re: Redskins are one of the teams using IPads for playbooks
Pretty lame reasons all in all to pull away from using the iPads. I forgot to charge it? Come on now, everyone has a cell phone these days and is aware of the need for frequent charging. Plus you can just plug it in and charge while you use it. Please.

Could just be local network... could be direct file transfer via firewire or whatever... could be bluetooth... lot of ways without it needing internet access |
