The 2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

I know many aren't fans of the Olympics, but for those who are...here's a thread for Olympic discussion

Re: The 2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

I'm a fan of the Olympics, but not London. :P

Swimming will be interesting. Lochte has been beating Phelps in a lot of exhibitions and qualifiers over the last year. It's going to be fun to watch the two teammates who are also rivals. They should both be dominating the competition.

Lochte might not be well-known yet but he already has 6 medals. Phelps won't be sweeping everything this time around.

Also, beach volleyball.

I'm becoming a dirty old man I think.

As for other competition, womens' swimming will be all Missy Franklin and gymnastics will be Jordyn Weiber's.

Team USA basketball is going to disappoint. They're no Dream Team. They might not lose a game but a lot of the games will be a lot closer than they should be. We should be blowing everyone out in basketball. Sure, Spain has a few NBA stars like the Gasol brothers and a few other teams have a handful of NBA players (not necessarily stars) but we have a full roster of NBA superstars and can't blow everyone out? It's a lack of effort and too much ego. We'll still win Gold, but we should.

Soccer will continue to be my sleep aid.

Alex Morgan. So talented. So hot. Sigh.

On that note, although Olympic soccer is not as big of a deal as the World's Cup and other international competitions, I hope that our ladies put on a good showing and come home with gold.

Wow, I had forgotten she was on here, but now I remember it.

She was expected to be a contender in 2016 but made the team this time, earlier than expected.

I wouldn't underestimate her...who knows, she could have been using NFL training facilities in the middle of the night!

This pretty much sums it up for me.
I ask again: Does she deserve to be banned from the Olympics? This is no defense of Papachristou. The tweet was stupid and misguided, at best. But if this is about teaching and tolerance, then doesn't letting her compete make more sense? She's contrite about the incident. In theory, she could do more good by being on the world's biggest stage rather than being left behind in Athens.

Meanwhile, good for Greek politicians for keeping an eye on the important stuff, like the Twitter accounts of triple jumpers. I can think of literally nothing else in the country that deserves attention.
Let the girl compete.

^^ Actually the USA beat France 4-2. Alex Morgan had two goals although Tobin Heath should get the credit for the second one because of a dynamite cross. Hopefully the US team continues to play the way they did in the second half rather than the way they did in the first half.

Re: The 2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

I'm rooting for the soccer teams to win gold.

Not because I even like soccer or because I think it will expand soccer fandom in the USA, but so we can brag to the rest of the world "Look, we don't even care about this sport beat all of you at YOUR game." That will just kill them inside, especially the British snobs.

I have seen the score posted as us winning, 3 to 1, 4 to 1, and now your saying 4 to 2. Its a win either way but the news on the win is pretty bad.
