Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Yeah that's right, I said Coles
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40538-2005Feb20.html
Washington Redskins wide receiver Laveranues Coles has had at least two extensive conversations with Coach Joe Gibbs since the season ended which are expected to lead to his release from the team, according to sources familiar with the situation.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Guess that cements the fact we'll be drafting a WR. This is a disaster...
I am in shock...complete f&^%ing shock. Holy crap this is bad. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Is that even POSSIBLE from a cap standpoint?
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
It will be interesting to see how much of his bonus he gives back and what the Redskins do with the money.
What I don't get is why is it better to waive him than trade him? I guess it's because he wouldn't return part of his money otherwise. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
He is giving back part of his bonus to alleviate cap concerns. That is how much he wants out. He is actually going to pay the Redskins to release him. The NFLPA is going to crap a brick. I am crapping a Buick as we speak.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
WHAT THE F**K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well our wide reciver situation just went from rock bottom..... to rock bottom, 50 ft of crap... then us..... You have got to be freaking kidding me. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
After reading the article I have much more insight... Wow - he thinks Gibbs offense is THAT bad. That's not a good preliminary report for next year.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
If Coles wants to be part of a "vertical offense" he could join Norv in Oakland....so is a Coles for Porter trade possible?
I don't even know what to think of Coles right now, but hopefully this means more playing time for Taylor Jacobs. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Is he goign to also give us a first round draft choice back?!?!? How can they just give in to his wants like this. hes signed, paid for, healding and producing. Make him suck it out and tell him he will get the deep ball. What the heck
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Coles thinks Gibbs' offense in 2004 was bad for him, but even Gibbs has said he's going to open it up next year
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
This really concerns me not just from the standpoint of our WR situation but more from the standpoint that this is totally ludicrous coming from Coles. He 100% does not seem like the guy who would do this. Obviously we never really KNOW these guys but I think you can get a good insight into their personalities based on their level of effort and their tenacity. It just doesn't fit. So what the hell is going on here? What is SO BAD that he wants out enough that Gibbs thinks it's the best thing to do? I mean what did Gibbs tell him that they would probably draft a WR to be their #1 and Coles rightfully said screw off? Man this is craziness I tell you.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
At least he did it in a respectful manner. Didn't go through the media - tryed to do it quietly and without problem. I gave the guy crap about his injury, but I'm really going to miss him!
Could this mean a possible trade for Moss? He'd come a lot cheaper if we sent Coles... Just a thought. None of the FA receivers impress me - neither do many in the draft. Edwards, Williams, and Williamson (SC dude) all have possibilties. The worst thing is - said the Cowboys are in the market for a WR. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
SmootSmack - didn't Gibbs also say that during the regular season?
I think he got sick of running curl routes - and more than anything... Losing. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I just can't believe that two stand up guys can't get on the same page here.
|
SmootSmack - didn't Gibbs also say that during the regular season?

I''m not trying to turn on Coles here because I think he's very talented and gives his all on the field. But it's kind of curious that he didn't place any of the blame on his injuries. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I'm at a loss for words right now, this one is totally out of left field.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
So let me get this straight...we might lose Coles, Smoot, possibly Perice and Samuels all this offseason???
Maybe someone, like Dasel, understood the article better than I do. But what do we get by releasing Coles? As far as the Cap this year, and especially next season? |

I guess that's just it, you never truly know what makes these guys tick. |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Gmanc, I think Coles' giving up his bonus may actually help us keep Smoot and Pierce
But this looks like a call for CrazyCanuck |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I guess...ahhh
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Do you think Coles already has a place in mind he wants to go to?
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Let's blow it up and start over in the WR department. Sounds good to me.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
This is just blowin my mind guys, WTF?!
This just blows the roof off all the offseason plans, now we HAVE to acquire a WR either through the draft or free agency, now Jacobs HAS to be ready to step up and contribute. All I can say is...wow. Damn I need a drink! |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I dont belive this. We BETTER, and I MEAN BETTER be able to keep a couple guys, like Smoot, with this extra money. I am so sick and tired of having all these peopel come and go liek its a god damn carosuel. A drink is right matty.....absolutley shocked!
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
He'd better be giving up the rest of his bonus so we take a minimal cap hit if at all.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
man coles suck it up and play. This sets a bad precendent that Gibbs shouldnt allow. You play in a system, not for your self. Thats what he needs to preech. This makes it ok for Portis to say he wants to be cut to. Becuase we didnt run in a style that is good for Portis, we made him do what Bugel wanted. And Taylor didnt get to play the way he wanted, he should ask to be released to. And lavar is definitly gone, we know how much he hates beign asked to go in the three point stance....
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
why wouldnt they atelast try and trade him. i bet the ravens would give up their first round pick for him, atelast a second and third.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
It's the right call for Gibbs to let him go, if he doesn't want to be here that bad he's the last kind of guy you want infecting your locker room.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
So heres my rant beccause I need to freaking vent......
I'm taking this online class, teach is a bitch, took me like four hours to write these essays; I have to be up to work at 6:30, want to go to bed early (as in 11). Finish the essays at like 11 30, just wanna take a click look at the path' to see whats up.... and I see this crap...... Its now 12:20, my laptop was running batteries, i just went to get the extention, broke a candle, got glass in my finger, am bleeding profusley from that, AND COLES ISNT GONNA BE A REDSKIN ANYMORE..... another freaking jersey goes to waste....... THANKS A LOT LC. I need stiches.....F*CK! |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
His cap number for 2005 is $3,357,142. If he is released straightup the cap hit is $9,285,710. So he has to give back at least $5,928,570 to break us even on the deal. We better be doing better than that. I don't understand why we don't just trade him? It makes no sense whatsoever to release him. If you make a handshake deal that has him give back ALL of his remaining SB and then only trade him to a team he approves of and on the condition that he can restructure with them to get some guranteed money then it works out for all. I mean we probably wouldn't get much of a deal in a trade but it is better than nothing. I am thinking like a 5th round pick. I mean at this point a 5th round pick and cap space would be better than a middle finger as he walks out the door.
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Coles will immediately be one of the top available players available when he hits the market. If we shopped him I could see someone giving up at least a 2nd rounder. Why we're not going to shop him is beyond me, hopefully we'll be able to figure that out when the dust starts to settle on this.

We can't just trade him because of the cap hit. I was typing up what I think is a reasonable deal(above) when you posted and this the only way it could possibly work. Also... no one is going to give us a good pick for him when the know he wants out and we're willing to release him and they'd have to give him someguranteed money. I mean maybe a 4th if we find someone desperate. |

Should have waited until tomorrow so you could get some rest Hope your finger is feeling better So Gibbs is totally revamping this WR corps with Gardner, Coles, and McCants all likely gone. This is just insane. I thougth the biggest news this weekend was going to be our new server. |

Well it still has to compete with the avatars one, LOL |
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Coles was one of my favorite WR's in Madden, guess he's gotta go now!
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Jesus, we lost a top notch wideout and a first rounder for nothing!
|
Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Plus we're about to lose Smoot for nothing.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I agree, why dont the redskins say F--- you, to Coles and trade his ass!!! why give him the oppertunity to go where he wants. That way we can be sure that he wont go to dallas, new york giants, or the eagles, but no, we let him pick where he wants to play, Fu*k THAT!!!!!!!
