Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
I think Shanny and co. have gone about things the right way so far, from limiting his media time to crafting the offense to fit his skill set.

I agree completely. I think they have done everything in their power to minimize distractions and make him comfortable as he transitions out of the Baylor system and into the Shanahan system. |

Definitely, even as far as limiting his exposure to the media. That can have a huge effect on a rookie. All the badgering and questions can either make his head big, or his eyes. Neither are something that we need right now. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
Reply fail. I should read thoroughly

Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
He's a Rookie IMO the FO needed to sheild him like this.
|
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
Absolutely. Even though he's probably already one of the more level-headed players, it's still unexplored territory. Too much of ANYTHING is bad
|
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
In the years I've been a fan, I don't think we've ever seen a rookie carry as much weight on his shoulders as RG3 has. What they are doing right now is smart, and I agree with it, because he's got a hell of a lot of hype to live up to. This might end up being Mike Shanny's career defining moment, even moreso than his two SB wins.
|
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
RG3 already has enough pressure on him. Limiting his press time will help somewhat in removing some of that pressure.
|
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
RGIII seems from all evidence to revel in the media so far.
I'm sure that will change and be a real test of his character should he have a few-game slide at some point but I think he's a solid kid and up to the task. He's the real deal. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
It's a little late now. Would have been a little late as far back as the draft.
“I love talking to you guys,” Griffin said. “It’s great every single time, but that’s Coach Mike’s decision. He wants me to talk to you guys once a week, so I’m talking to you guys once a week. The biggest thing is that I’m the quarterback and I’m the face of the team, the face of the franchise. I think we all understand that. The guys understand that if I’m getting all the attention, we’re doing extremely well on the field.” Please don't start to get cocky, RGIII. You aren't the face of the franchise yet, though we hope you will be. |

I say three years in case he is horrible, but hopefully for 23 years if he is awesome. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
I'm impressed with how the team is getting RGIII prepared for the season. I think Cooley summed it up nicely in his interview on NFLam.

I agree. Wait, I thought Shanny was a egotistical maniac that forced QBs into his system? /end sarcasm Happy we have this young man on our team and look forward to watching him grow as a player. I really hope he rebounds this year. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
I don't know if shielding him from the media makes a difference unless Griffin said something perceived as controversial that whoops up the media and becomes a distraction.
...but seriously, who likes dealing w/ the media anyway lol? I'd find every excuse in the book to limit being hounded. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
I think the idea is to keep him focused on what's important. Not that he would have a problem on his own, but just in case I think it was the right call to limit his press time.
|
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
Honestly,
Who wants to let the media loose on any rookie QB? The media won't stop unless you set bounds and then will push those to whatever limit you set, and call it limiting the media. RGIII certainly will handle more pressers as time goes on, but let him get to football business first. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
Its interesting because Shanny built up expectations like crazy early on, now that the season is close he seems to be trying to temper those expectations. Like all rookies, I think RGIII will exceed expectations is some areas and fall short in others but I do think Shanny is the right coach to help him manage/cope with those expectations.

Did we really give up 3 first round pics if we got one in return. I keep hearing that but my math is 3-1=2 and from what I have seen he is going to be worth every penny. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations

Remember when he got here and was proclaiming we'd be a dynasty crushing the rest of the NFL beneath our mighty foot? And how we'd be so good they would just rename the Lombardi Trophy "The best team in the NFL not named the Redskins Trophy" because of our intimidating god-like status? Well? Where's our yearly ceremony at the White House dammit?! And now all of a sudden that we have a rookie qb he's talking about "multiyear plans" and "not piling massive expectations onto the shoulders of our rookie qb." |

They keep counting this year's sixth pick to make it sound worse. |

Lots of talk about how smart he is and how fast he's picking things up. That could make some people think he's going to play like a vet as a rookie. It was just post draft hype but I do think Shanny doesnt want to pile too much onto RGIII. |
Re: Protecting RG3's Great Expectations
Not sure I'd call that building up expectations like crazy, but ok

Therefore if you're going to count "getting a pick back", then count using it, so the "math" would be 3-1+1=3. And don't forget the 2nd rounder we gave up last draft as well.
Another way to put it: If we didn't do that trade, and simply picked another guy, we would have given up one 1st rounder for that guy. What did we give up for RG3? Three 1sts and a 2nd. It's no more complicated than that, people! |

It wasnt so much what he was saying but how he seemed to be constantly saying it. |
