NFL folded like a tent, good for the refs.

Touching on what Smoot said in the other thread regarding the refs. Hopefully fans will appreciate the refs now that we see how hard of a job it is, and how imperfect it is. Sure the old refs will continue to miss calls, but god damn it's glad to have them back. This could be another area we have computers judge. Right now, RR is working on the prototype for Computer Jury so hopefully he'll have something for the NFL by 2025. :silly: |
Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
We'll be complaining about bad calls this weekend.

Maybe...but we won't be complaining the the refs don't know the rules...or how to mark off a penalty...or have the respect of the coaches/players...or are intimidated by the difficulty and importance of their jobs...or overwhelmed by the speed and ferocity of the game...or that they're ruining the on-field product. Other than those minor things all the officials are about the same. |

Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
I see these refs struggling more than usual with no practice/warm up games. Hopefully they can control the game better than the replacements. I think the replacements would have been okay after ~1 year of practice. I know that's a while, but when the NFLRA keeps any college refs from coming over, you take what you can get. Their salary/retirement bonuses are ridiculous. Refs making more than some of the players!

Wait I thought it was the NCAA keeping their D1 refs from filling in? |

Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
One of the biggest differences is that the players and coaches will respect these refs. I think the lack of respect shown (because it wasn't earned) was what was driving the performances down instead of getting better.

Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
The replacements were affecting the outcome of games and it doesn't get any worse than that. At least the regular guys know the rules. Glad to have them back is an understatement. I never appreciated these guys as much as I do now. Welcome back!!!

I think it is, because I definitely heard that there were D3 refs calling the games lately. Still blows my mind because I briefly went to a D3 school and man was that ish a joke. |

Exactly, I think NC posted a summary of the refs that did the Skins-Rams game (the one that blew the Pack/Seahawks game Monday night) and almost all of them were JuCo/High School refs. No wonder they failed so badly. |

Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
I'm betting that we'll see a lot of Coaches saying along the same line of "Boy am I glad to see you guys again" or "boy never thought I'd miss you" to the refs. I also expect a lot of cheers from the fans whenever the refs make their first calls. Possibly even hear Ed Houchuli say "good to be back..we have holding offense ..."
Bottom line this is great news that we have real officials back. |
Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
It's about time! Three games of inferior officiating is long enough. Glad to have the real refs back!

The real refs are rock stars tonight, until the first call goes against the Ravens at least.

They deserve it. |
Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
I wish I got a standing ovavtion because I chose not to show up for work for three weeks.

Re: NFL confirms deal with NFLRA
It was great seeing a ref I recognize. It was also great to have some professionalism and more importantly, eyesight in the stripes.
Seemed like night and day with the crew last night. Even the ref's calls just sounded better...it sounded like he was sure about the call and had a sort of forcefulness to his announcement. Am I crazy about this? The replacements had discussions, looked around, delayed and then made a tentative-sounding call. The real ref last night picked up the flag and made a concise, strong call that sounded like he knew what he was doing...because he did. The little things we didn't notice or appreciate before. This is like when I get to drive the nicer family car on the weekend after driving my higher-mileage, older, smaller daily driver to work all week. Driving that car all week makes our Taurus feel like a luxury car. You don't realize how crappy your car is until you drive a nice one. |
