Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)

Now that we've gotten the slightly ridiculous "should Shanahan be fired" debate out of the way, let's talk about the more likely scenario, getting rid of Haslett. Vote and discuss.

re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)

my vote hinges on if he has lost the locker room, so i can't vote until i get word on that.

if he has, fire him immediately.
otherwise, wait and see what he does w the rest of this season.

I'm not a huge fan of making coaching moves in season, but it might make sense especially if we having another piss poor showing against the Panthers.

Why not let Morris take the reins? How is his rep in the locker room?

Replace one 4-3 guy with another? I'd dare say that Haz knows more about the 3-4 than Morris does so I'm not sure that move would be smart either.

I selected "wait till after the season", but I'm really torn on just parting with him if the Panthers game goes bad defensively. However, I think this is one area that all of us agree that a change has to be made at the DC position.

Just what this organization needs, more change. Its the talent (or lack thereof) not the coaching.

And its just a matter of time before Hasslett gets the Blitzkrieg Bop!!!

Since the word is that Haslett has lost the locker room, he has to go. It will be impossible to get good results while he is here.

re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)

I voted after the season, but if the locker room's lost, go for it during the bye week. Suppose it can't get much worse than your players thinking you're a joke.

calia 10-29-2012 04:30 PM

re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)

I have an idea. Let's switch for a 4-3 during the bye week.

OK, all joking aside. I don't see how getting rid of Haslett helps. To be clear, there are instances when addition by subtraction is a viable strategy, and D. Hall is getting perilously close to the point where that could happen, but for coaches, that's generally a bad idea unless the locker room is lost. Moreover, on our staff, it doesn't seem like anyone has more experience with the defense we're running. And I don't get the sense that Haslett has lost the locker room (I haven't seen a single report indicating as much, which one often sees when that happens). I do think that the staff is now trying to think about how else it might generate pressure -- I think seeing Baker on the field yesterday was evidence of that (even though it was not successful). I also think they're pushing the CBs to press a little more at the line -- as evidenced by C. Griffin's penalty. But clearly, these things are not enough.

re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)

Again, to clarify. I believe he's lost the locker room. And I'm basing that on knowing he's lost certain key players.

As for Raheem, I guess he'd be the natural successor if a change were made right now. I think the players like him. But I don't think he's ready to be a 3-4 DC

Morris doesn't have exp in 3-4 other than here. Not ready yet

How do you know he's lost certain players? Not doubting your word, but I am curious as to what you've heard and what you know. And which players? If he's lost D. Hall, for example, it's hard to get too exercised about that. But if he's lost Fletcher, on the other hand, that would be genuine cause for concern.

I feel that this might be the last year of this failed 3-4 experiment. We've never had the personnel for a 3-4 defense hence all the yards/points given up. I think we should wait to until the end of the season, but I get the feeling that if we lose to Carolina it may happen sooner.

We don't have any key players on defense.

He's done a fantastic job with our DBs... a promotion is definitely in order.

I voted he has to go now. Our defense has been going from bad to worse which can't fully attributed to injuries.... Morris can't do any worse as far as I'm concerned....

Bob and Weave ought to be RGIII's nickname, with the fact that he's forced to run because our WRs cannot get open.

But seriously, the "wives like to talk to their husbands" response isn't terribly informative. And to be clear, I am not at all doubting your word, but I would like to hear a little more detail about how Haslett has lost the locker room and which players, in particular, no longer have faith in him. One or two malcontents griping doesn't move me; a larger groundswell from real team leaders does. And if we're talking about something as drastic as removing our DC, I would want to have more to go on before arriving at a view, and I would imagine that others on this site who follow the team and try to engage in informed discussions might as well.

Fletcher's disconnect with Haslett was a big reason why he nearly didn't return this year. Haslett and Alexander have butted heads plenty as well. As have Wilson and Haslett

SS, can you answer this...how do you think the reaction of the Path will be with the coach we are looking at to replace Haslett and will he (or she if Rex Ryan) continue with the 3-4?

Not suitable for a poll, but the most important question on defense is: How the flying f*ck do you end up in a 3-4 defense w/o coaches OR players suited for it???

No!!! We do not replace Has mid season. Nor do we replace him after this season. We simply do not have all the holes filled yet. If we start over again, we will be talking like this for the next 5 years...

I'm not completely sold on switching from 3-4 back to 4-3 and saying that 3-4 may cause turnovers but not stopping points.

I'd rather us get a coordinator that KNOWS the 3-4. Asking a dude that's better in the 4-3 than 3-4 is like asking Tom Brady to run the option: He'll do it but it's gonna look really f'ing ugly.

Speaking of the 3-4 and turnovers, was that something proven or was it just someone saying, "We're going to get a lot more turnovers in the 3-4"?

I voted wait until after the season but if he's already lost the players, and we have another poor performance against the Panthers (a very real posssibility) I can definitely see us getting rid of him at the bye week. Who would I replace him with? Probably Bob Slowik. I doubt he'd do a much better job but then again it can't get much worse than Haslett. I'm still not sure why they'd ask Haslett to do the job if he didn't want to run a 3-4 in the first place though.

I believe Shanny wanted to institute the 3-4 because the film study he did in his year off from coaching led him to believe it's the best defense as far as stopping offenses go as well as it forces more turnovers. Idk, I mean the Bears have ran a 4-3 for a while now and their defense is still balling. Whatever way they decide to go, idc what it is, as long as it produces results.
