from the article: With starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff battling injuries throughout the season, Brent has started five of 12 games and played in over 41 percent of the Cowboys' defensive snaps, setting career-highs with 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks. But really, that's what you took from the post? |
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
thoughts and prayers. very tragic
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
So stupid. Don't see how these guys don't call a cab... or if god forbid you're driving when you shouldn't be at least don't drive wrecklessly. Terrible all around.

It's not like they are hurting for money. If you have money to drink, you probably have money for a cab. |

It's simple enough, and yet still hard to understand why players don't do it. Not only that, I think the NFL has a program for players so they don't even have to pay for a cab if they are intoxicated. If that isn't the case, it's still a shame. And I still believe even though this happened, nothing will change. Players will still drink and drive, and life will go on. Either way this is a tragedy all around. R.I.P. Jerry Brown. |
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
Don't take this explanation the wrong way, but..
These guys have been in controlled environments for most of the teen and adult lives. People telling them when time to go to sleep and what time to get up and what time to leave. How much to workout, what to eat, etc. I guess what I'm saying is when they're out socializing, clubbing, etc., it's the one moment when they're in control and have say over what they're doing. So calling a cab, which is the reasonable, sensible and adult thing to do, I kind of get the mind sight that says, I can drive. At least let me do this one thing. To be clear, not calling a cab when you've been out partying and handing the keys over is gross negligence and irresponsible on many levels. |

It's worse than you think. The NFL used to have a special service where players could anonymously call and say they were in no condition to drive and a private car service would take them home or back to the hotel for free. Players got nervous since the NFL ran it the owners would find out and so they basically had the NFLPA take over the service. The NFLPA basically let the service fade away |
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
read on a Dallas blog this is Brent second arrest for DUI, one being in college. he appeared to be another Jerry low character pick in the supplemental draft. typical Dallas.
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
Were they both drunk or just Brent. Seriously, how ****ing stupid can you be?
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
Tragic and avoidable.
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
Oh well. Just another idiot that thinks his actions don't affect others, until they do. Lock him up and throw away the key. Killed an innocent guy (albeit one who should have known not to get into the car with a drunk driver). Sad, but you will have idiots aplenty in a sport with these types of guys.
So it goes. |

We can't say much. Look how many of our guys have tested positive for drugs over the past 2 years. At least we don't have this kind of crap going on. |

My condolences to his family and friends.
I just can't help but think that this will fuel DALs playoff run #BrownStrong |

Honestly, that's one way to help out the players and they failed massively. Terrible terrible news... |
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys. Because God hates them and makes them dead.
There, that ought to stir the pot! |
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
3rd strike, and this time someone died. sad.
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
Very sad indeed
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
It's getting to the point where they need to start putting breathalyzer ignitions in everyone's vehicles, not even joking. So sad.
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
I'm really sorry to say this, but DUI/DWI is a huge problem in our country. Grown men see the MADD ads on T.V. but don't think they apply to them. Very sad, and very preventable.
|
So, two murders by NFL players in successive weeks. There will be some real soul searching by the league on how to address player safety off the field, I will wager. I wouldn't be surprised if each team hires someone who acts as something of a social worker, intervening when there are suspected off the field problems on behalf of the team an the league. These guys are adults and are supposed to act like it, and most do. But when guys fall off the rails, they tend to do so in spectacular fashion.

The NFLPA basically let the service fade away
So these reports that the players have the number on the back of their nflpa card are false SS? I have heard it on ESPN and another article I read that the players can call the service and be taken anywhere in the US. Regardless, awful decision makin by the young guys and terrible sad that the man driving actually spent time in prison for this while in college. If that doesn't work than maybe killing a man an going back to jail will smarten him up. Guys, I also want to say this, I am not a guy who drinks an drives. I never have and never plan on it. I don't make a ton as a living, but it was something my parents taught me as a child. My mom and dad always told me even as a teenager that I should call them before getting into a car with a drunk driver. I rode with a friend once who was way to drunk to drive and it was one of the scariest things I have ever done. |
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
The league is just a microcosm of society in general. These guys aren't above doing stupid things just like the rest of us.
|
Re: Cowboys DT charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter
It exists just not as effectively promoted to the players as it once was I'll bet a lot od players don't even know about it

This. It's sad of course. We hear about it because he's a professional football player. Unfortunately families we hear nothing about go through this all the time. I don't drink but I do go out with people who do. I'm always happy to be the DD because I'd hate to see something like this happen to a friend...or anyone for that matter. Unfortunately people don't always think ahead. If you know you're going to be drinking...set up a ride before hand if possible. If not...call a cab. |

They still have the program. I know if there was a program like that for average citizens, I'd take advantage of it. Players NEED to take advantage of it. Why they don't us beyond me. Part of me thinks every car should have a breathalyzer connected to the ignition as a standard feature. Drinking and driving is an epidemic. Every Friday or Saturday night, I'm surrounded by drivers who've obviously been drinking. Most drunk drivers don't get caught, but it's an epidemic in our society. Hopefully this tragedy will garner enough national attention to raise awareness and make people who drink and drive rethink their decisions. |

For sure, id probably be out a lil more. I lived in the city for 10 years before buying my house. Id walk to spots, and a cab ride was only like $10. Ride to suburbs more like $45 now. If it was free that would be great. |

Very true. But those of us who don't make such stupid decisions can look down their noses at those who do, NFL players or otherwise. Driving drunk is f'ing retarded and you deserve your fate if you do it. I'm not directing this at you, Matty. I just hate stupid people. |

So it goes.
If you get in a car with someone drunk its as much your fault as anyones. He also could have talked him out of driving. The charges are stupid and just another example of people blaming someone else. |

What if they were drunk as well? |
I just saw on ESPN, that the cowboys released Josh Brent. I just hope they still continue to help him with a support system, I understand he committed a crime but his best friend died in the wreck. Watching the reporters surround him after he was released asking questions about his friend was sick to me.
Bottom line he deserves what comes his away as far as jail time or whatever, but his emotional state is probably fragile. NFL needs to support him as far as counseling goes and keep a close eye on him because he could become suicidal. |

Well if your going to say the passenger was too drunk to know better then wouldn't you have to say the same thing for the driver. This whole thing is bad and a lot of people have been hurt but the passenger still knowingly got in a car with a drunk driver. He cotributed to his own death and it not like the driver hit an unknowing other person or car. |

I don't think the NFL or Cowboys need to be involved, but I certainly would hope that one or two of his fellow players would be involved with him as he copes with the consequences of his decisions. He will be found guilty, and do whatever the state finds appropriate, and he needs to accept that responsibility. |

Ok I guess I'm a pussy then, not going to argue about it. The dude messed up and he will have to live with killing his friend for the rest of his life. He goes out and kills himself it will bring the spot light to he NFL again. I guess Lenoard Little and Donte Stalleworth are already their in the sea. Oh wait both played after getting a DUI and killing a innocent victims. Oh and Ray Lewis who is praised left and right got a second chance. I am not defending him; just saying a loss of another life in this situation it not necessary. |

I think public humiliation, probably doesn't solve the key issue of drinking and driving. Do I know the answer? No. But I do think its easy to look at this from a micro perspective and miss the bigger picture/issue. |

Just saw Donte Stallworth catch a TD why isn't he in jail.
