Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

We have all been pretty pessimistic about the possibility of one of the top WRs falling to us in the draft, but here is Mel Kiper's newest mock draft, just posted today:

1. SF - Alex Smith
2. Mia - Ronnie Brown
3. Clev- Aaron Rodgers
4. Chi- Cedric Benson
5. TB- Cadillac Williams
6. Ten- Pac-Man Jones
7. Min- Braylon Edwards
8. Ari- Derrick Johnson
9. Washington- Mike Williams
10. Det- Dan Cody
11. Dal- Shawne Merriman
12. SD- Marcus Spears
13. Hou- Alex Barron
14. Car- Troy Williamson
15. KC- Carlos Rogers
16. NO- Jammal Brown
17. Cin- Travis Johnson
18. Min- Fabian Washington
19. StL- David Pollack
20. Dal- Roddy White
21. Jax- Antrel Rolle
22. Baltimore- Erasmus James
23. Seattle- Shaun Cody
24. GB- Thomas Davis
25. Den- DeMarcus Ware
26. NYJ- Marlin Jackson
27. Atl- Brodney Pool
28. SD- Mark Clayton
29. Ind- Channing Crowder
30. Pit- Heath Miller
31. Phi- Jerome Mathis
32. NE- Barrett Ruud

Not that I'm an expert or anything, but the draft is kind of my thing, and I think he is pretty solid in this one. He bumps Fabian Washington way too high IMO due to his sick combine, and probably Jerome Mathis too high for the same reason. I think Antrel Rolle is too low due to Kiper thinking he is too slow, which most teams don't seem to believe. Other than that, though, its a really plausible draft, especially in the top 10 and demonstrates that we may not even have to trade up to get our man. Finally a bit of good news.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

me like

Williamson's stock sure is on the rise, before the combine he wasn't even projected to go in the 1st round in most mocks.

That would be VERY nice. I would love our reciving corps if we add him in there.

I like it as well I just hope no one tries to jump ahead of us to try and get him

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Fabian scored high in the Wonderlic test, that and the combine explains the bump. Would hate to see Merriman got to dallass.

his mocks tend to be believable and fairly on target... i think heath miller is a bit low at 30 though.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

I heard Miller is starting to free fall down draft boards because he isn't fast.

I like the Mike Williams pick.

i don't care about the 1st I care about the later rounds because thats were you trully build your team.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Well we have not built much in the past few years with our late picks so I do not see why this will make a difference. Watch Miller drop to the 2nd round, frankly not a big need for most teams is a slow TE that can catch. Carolina and Orleans maybe but he will go in the 2nd.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

I have a strong feeling we will have the choice of any reciever we want, I do not think Minnesota is going to take a WR I think they are looking to address WR in free agency so they can draft defense quite possibly Derrick Johnson, if that happen's we may see arizona trade down, possibly someone will trade up for either Edward's or William's I do think we will have a very good shot at 1 of them.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

I certainly agree Malcolm. Our team will be very impressive I think. As long as we can fill these holes that seem to be developing on defense, I think we will be a team that no one wants to mess with.

Also, while I like the result of the mock draft you posted, Monk, I don't think its very accurate. Braylon is pretty much universally accepted to be going before Mike Williams for example, and Alex Barron is a questionable choice in the top 10, let alone the top 2. I also think that the analyses are prone to errors, like stating that Cedric Benson has good hands out of the backfield for example. Still, I like any draft that has WRs slipping.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

The key to these mock drafts is Chicago, because if they pass on a WR then we don't need to worry as much about what Minnesota does since both WR's will still be on the board. Chicago was expected to take Edwards until now, but I guess people are figuring Muhamed in free agency would change thier draft strategy. Anyway if Chicago passes on the WR's then the Skins should be all set...

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

what's to keep chicago from drafting another qb and miami is probably more likely to take benson than brown but I guess just because brown had one good workout he suddenly gets into the top 3 pick category. I know I am personally hoping and praying that Williams somehow is available when we pick.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Williams certainly would complement the two smaller guys in Patton and Moss and even Edwards for that matter. Got to like his size.

FRPLG 03-06-2005 11:53 PM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Realistically it seems these four guys are going before 9 without a doubt...
Alex Smith
Ronnie Brown
Aaron Rodgers
Cedric Benson

That leaves these teams in front of us
TB
Ten
Min
Ari

TB) going WR seems odd but wasn't there a rumor that Williams initially wasn't going to workout at the combine becasue TB guranteed him they'd take him at 5? Worth noting but really they have other needs to address and Williams did end up working out so that looks like we're clear.

Tenn) Definitely could go WR. They have the need and the players are there to take. They also have an equally big need at CB and it looks like they'd rather go CB where they can get a quality player for far less than the position average compared to what they'd need to pay a WR. Again a WR doesn't seem likely.

Minn) I can't see them going anything but WR. Losing Moss creates a huge hole that can't be ignored. WR seems likely.

Ari) What don't they need? Well about the only thing is a WR. Fitzgerald and Boldin means no chance lance on a WR.

So basically we're worrying about three teams. TB, Tenn, Minn of which only one seems likely to take a WR. TB going WR just doesn't compute but Tenn gives me an uneasy feeling. They seem like team that is too smart for their own good like the Colts who think that the notion of a shut down CB is antiquated. I can really see them ignoring Jones or Rolle and going with whichever of the two WRs is left.

We should have a shot at Williamson though but he scares me.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Of course free agenecy can and hopefully will change this. As well there will undoubtedly be movement at the top that could derail everything.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

One thing I am fairly sure will happen is Minnesota adding a veteran WR. Be it Gardner, or Boldin, or Travis Taylor, or Plaxico (all of those have been rumored) they seem determined to use FA or trade to add their WR. That leaves them free to take defense, probably DJ at 7. Tennessee has a big need at CB, much bigger than at WR, and I agree with Kiper that they take Pac-man. He is worthy of the pick IMO and fills that crucial hole at starting CB, as well as PR. Chicago will likely have an option of selecting either Ronnie Brown or Cedric Benson, and I just can't see them passing up one of those. TB may go after Cadillac, Gruden claimed to love him and their RBs are all over 30. In other words, its very likely that we have a good shot at a WR at 9.

AndySkinUK 03-07-2005 07:50 AM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Well if Minnesota sign Gardner or Burress they won't draft a WR in round 1 so that eliminates them.

Tennessee have more pressing needs than WR with Drew Bennett and Calico (if healthy) already there.

I can't see Chicago drafting a WR that high after picking up Muhammed in FA

I think we will get a WR in the No9 spot, though personally i would like to see us move down a bit and draft DE David Pollack and then pick up a WR in round 2 (if we get a pick there through a trade) or round 3.
Miami picking a OT, Simply put ~ NO WAY
I could see it happening if they pick up a RB before the draft, their line does need some major work.

Daseal 03-07-2005 01:30 PM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

If Miami goes OT - which I could see. They're going to trade down. The best OT in the draft will still be there at 10.

I don't see the Bears drafting a RB. With Thomas Jones playing very well last year, and the A train on the bench (or did he go somewhere in free agency) they have talent at RB. They have Mushin Muhammad now, but who else will play the other side? I think they'll go receiver myself.

FRPLG 03-07-2005 01:34 PM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

So the biggest question that none of us have considered is...?
Where do we put a rookie WR? We have 4 locks for the team at WR right now...
Moss/Patten/Thrash/Jacobs. These guys are on the team unless they die. That leaves the 5 and most liekly final spot for McCants/Brown/Draft Pick. I can conceviably see the Skins bagging WR at 9 and keeping Brown. I think it is a mistake but I could happen. If so what the heck do we do then? We have to trade down at that point. We just have to.

FRPLG 03-07-2005 01:35 PM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

I suppose they could stash Brown on the practice squad again. I say we go that route and take the WR at 9.

JoeRedskin 03-07-2005 03:08 PM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Maybe I am reading too much into his late season performance, but I bet Brown comes through in a relatively big this year. He will may tagged as a returner at the start of the year and we keep six total WR's - I bet if we but him on the PSquad one of those teams he played AGAINST snags him.

I guess Moss and Patten are locks, McCants is likely gone, and we draft a rookie. Does anyone think that either Jacobs or Thrash are in danger of being cut? Could McCants pass either?

BDBohnzie 03-07-2005 04:03 PM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

am i the only one who doesn't like us taking a receiver at 9? i think back to those Super Bowl years...our 3 main receivers were speed (Clark), possession (Monk), and speed (Sanders). Let's say we do trade Gardner for a draft pick, that leaves us with Moss, Patten, Jacobs, Thrash and McCants. Also consider on those Super Bowl teams the H-Back and TE slots...Warren, Didier, et al. We currently have a kid who could be a superstar (Cooley), a decent receiving TE (Royal). i just think we should be looking elsewhere besides WR for our first round pick...i'd be happy to get Edwards or Williams, but i'd rather have something to solidify our defense even more.

one of our biggest pressing needs is a pass rush DE...David Pollack, Erasmus James, Shawne Merriman, Dan Cody...all should be available at 9. we also may need a corner at 9...if Smoot signs elsewhere.

overall, i want the best available coming to the Skins...i just think we're fairly solid at receiver, and can certainly pick someone up later with the pressing needs we have.

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

I'm with you BD, I'd like a pass-rushing DE. I know GW is the Moses of defensive coaches but there are only so many miracles he can work. We could use a big time pass rusher on the line. Plus if we lose Smoot and have to rely on Harris he's not at good at man coverage so we might not be able to count on safety blitzes as often.

i want derrick johnson he is compared to lavar while lavar was at penn! he is really fast with a 4.5!!!!!!!!! he is light though in the low 200s at 6'4 but geeeez he is gonna b a playmaker with ints and sacks. he plays outside but i think that i heard he can play middle and that is what we need i think that the WR can be found in later rounds if we just get a second pick otherwise i want williams, edwards, and williamson, and heath miller at TE if all edwards , williams, and johnson are gone. or just trade down

DJ is a great player that we don't need... moving him to middle is a waste of his talent, and its not really what his strong suit is... besides that, there's no way GW will have a rookie calling the defensive plays.

I'm kind of confused. You made the point that we had 2 speed guys and 1 possession guy when we won the Super Bowl. I don't see the possession guy in that list of current Redskins receivers. That's why I, and many others I assume, have become big supporters of taking Mike Williams.

MLB doesn't have to call the defensive plays. DJ is great, but will be long gone by 9 and I also think he's built for OLB. I'd like to grab Brooks out of UVA next year, but hopefully we won't have that high of a pick!

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

I am new to this board, but I think that the Skins would help themselves and there problem with the cap by trading down. They could fill more holes and pay less money than they would too a top 10 player in the draft. They may possibly even get picks for next year. I like williams or edwards but not to the point that we give up getting better across the board. And with the skins luck in picking first round Wr's (Howard, Gardner) we will pump tons of cash and see very little production. I don't want to see big names come and big games go. I want to see solid role players here and us in every game. Eventualy win most of them!
Maybe I am old-fashioned at only 29 years old.

Daseal 03-08-2005 11:59 AM

Re: Mel Kiper's New Mock Draft

Welcome, 2big. However, what glaring holes do you see?

In my opinion our offensive line, QB, RB, HB positions are all good to go.
Royal I don't mind at TE but I'd like to try a blocking type there. I feel our WRs still need work too.

As far as defense I think we need a CB if we don't resign Smoot, and that's it. Wynn plays solid every year, give Daniels a chance the few downs he played he looked half way decent on last year, our LBs are great - I bet Marshall can do what Pierce did. Salava'e is back and if he rotates with Noble that leaves us with a constantly fresh person pushing the pocket. I think the 9th pick salary will be cheaper than say the 20th pick and a 2nd rounder. Maybe not, but Im sure they'll be close!
