Who will the Redskins miss the most?

vote and discuss, who will the team miss the most in 2005?

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I think our linebacking core is still more than enough, and our wide reciever core didn't really get any worse from coles. So I think losing Smoot will have the biggest impact.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I too think our linebacking core is going to be just fine without Perice. I think Greg Williams made Perice a great player, and can do the same putting someone else in his place. Thats not too say Perice wont be missed, because I'm sure he is going to have a great career in NY and I think he's a great player. So I have to say Smoot. I think its going to be much harder to plug another guy in at Cornerback than I do linebacker. So I'll say Smoot. Good Riddance to LC.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I think it's tough to say. In Pierce we're losing a very smart MLB who was basically the QB of the defense, that role will need to be taken on by someone else.

In Smoot we're losing a very good cover corner who played hurt and was a fan favorite.

In Coles... we're losing a guy who doesn't want to be here so who cares.

Personally I'll miss Pierce the most with Smoot a close second.

I answered Smoot but having said that I don't think any of those three will be the reason we do or don't make our potential.

I'm still putting my money on the Coach.

Viva le Gibbs!

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

Tough call but i would say Pierce.

He was the QB of the D and a great find.

Smoot was a good CB, but not as good as Springs. Coles and his 90 catches wont be replaced by 1 guy but i think the Moss/Patten combo will catch as many balls as the Coles/Gardner combo.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I initially thought Pierce, but Coles was down right tough! It seems we have some character on defense and another guy will step up because of that. On offense, hmmmm. All of these guys have skills and speed, but Thrash seems to be the only consistent WR to show his guts. It never fails to amaze me how so many fans won't let go of Smoot. I don't recall all of this 'love' for Champ. Maybe Stephen Davis though. Let it go guys. :oink:

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I think it's a VERY tough call.

Coles
It depends on his toe situation, our offensive system in 2005, Santana Moss and who we draft. If he finally gets over his toe and becomes the explosive wideout we got when we first traded for him, I think there will be a lot of talk about how we miss him. If he heals well and our offensive system does in fact change to a more "open, downfield" system, Coles might have stopped complaining and our offense would've really benefitted. But those are a lot of ifs. I think how Coles' departure affects us also depends on how Santana Moss plays. If Moss looks like the Moss of 2003, Coles' departure will look like a blessing; we'll have gotten a cheaper player who wants to be here who has a smalller impact on our cap - a great deal. If our wide receiving corps plays like I think it will, we'll need to have drafted a wideout. So, there are so many variables in predicting the impact of Coles' departure that it's hard to make an accurate prediction.

Pierce
If Pierce continues to play like he did in 2004, we'll miss him terribly. He got a deal that was significantly less than the deal we gave to Trotter and he vastly outplayed Trotter. Plus he's younger, more intelligent, quicker, and can play OLB. Finally, it depends on who fills in for Pierce. If Barrow comes back healthy, Pierce's loss won't mean much. If Marshall can play as well at MLB as he did in 2004 at OLB, Pierce's loss won't mean much. Again, so many variables.

Smoot
Smoot's departure probably won't have that big of an impact on our 2005 team, but his loss could be more significant in 2006 and beyond. Harris will likely fill in well for Smoot, but he's old and we need some young, starting-caliber corners. Harris likely has one, or at most two, solid seasons left in the tank. So, I'm going to go with Smoot's loss having the biggest impact on our team.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

pierce will be missed more because he was the "general" or "commander" on defense smoot was just a "private" . football is a war and in times of war it's always worse to lose a "commander" than it is to lose a "private" but never-the-less the war will go on without either or, in this case both :coach: . as far as coles goes, i think the skins are better off with the new guys just brought in.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

none of the above.... none of them are irreplaceable. there are guys on the team already who can get the job done..
losing samuels would have been a body blow... the rest are no big deal

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

if pierce was the brains of the defense like everyone said he was he will surely be missed. the others can be replaced.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I voted for Pierce because he helped everyone else do the right thing by calling the plays and understanding WIlliams D. He made the players around him better. Hopefully, we can replace him, but it will be tough.

Smoot will be missed on particular plays next year (i.e., anytime we give up a big pass, it'll be "And remember, folks, they LET Fred Smoot go, etc., etc."), but though it will stand out at times, it won't matter as much overall.

How can you miss a guy who averaged like 9 yards a catch and had 1 TD? That may not have been Coles' fault, but whoever is to blame, we won't miss his "production." If he kicks ass as a jet, we may get depressed a bit, but whatever...

GoSkins! 03-13-2005 03:57 PM

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I voted for Coles. Except for the time when his finger was dislocated, the guy had very dependable hands. Maybe I've lowered my expectations by looking at Gardner to long, but having a guy that you can depend on to always catch the ball is big.

Whoever replaces Pierce will have the luxery of playing between Arrington and Washington... and being backed up by Taylor. He will have plenty of help to look good.

Whoever replaces Smoot will have the luxery of having Taylor back him up, and Williams to make adjustments to keep him out of trouble.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I think we can survive all 3. But based on depth concerns I'd say Smoot.

I think Springs/Harris/Wilds can handle the job. I just worry about an injury. If Springs went down I wouldn't feel so safe back there anymore.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

we will definately miss the spirit of Smooooooooooot but the value of Pierce, i am not gonna miss coles much with speed santana.

No more saying smooooooooooooott everytime he does something. i guess we can say Cooooooooooo leeey coooooooooo leeey

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

If our WR's can cut out the drops, Coles will be an afterthought. He had a 9.5 YPC last year (though that isn't entirely his fault), and we can get that from anyone.

Harris is a better tackler than Smoot, and though I will miss his presence, I'm not convinced we have downgraded dramatically at the position.

Since we have no idea who will play MLB this year (either a rehabbed Barrow or a converted Marshall) I have concerns there. Hopefully we won't miss any of them, but Pierce is the most likely.

One thing to keep in mind is that we were a 6-10 team. How much can we miss anyone if we aren't any better than that?

skinsfanthru&thru 03-13-2005 04:30 PM

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I voted for pierce since he made sure after the play was called that everyone on the d was in their appropriate places, but if there had been a none of the above selection that would have been my choice. the coaching staff had reasons other than cap hits to not go overboard with their offers to pierce or smoot and I think that speaks volumes in my mind over their proclaimed worth to our defense. coles will be missed because he was the most consistent passing option we had last year other than cooley, but he lost all of his value to the team by asking out no matter how he did it.

but like I said, none of the above would be choice if available because I think we can upgrade each of them with less money than what it would have taken to keep them.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

It's easy to hate him now but you don't replace 172 catches and 2,154 yards in 2 seasons so easily. :coach:

TheMalcolmConnection 03-13-2005 07:09 PM

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I didn't hate his production, I just hated the way he handled this situation. I hate it LESS because of the details that we found out about the story being blown open by the WP.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

I am not sure we will miss anyone of them more than another. I think it will be more evident in the CB position. However, I think that we have made a very good decision NOT to sign overly expensive players...ala...Eagles with the first Trotter situaiton. Or the Pats with Malloy or the other CB.

We need to protect the QB and the QB to play adequate. We are run oriented and that will keep our Defense off the field.

I can't imagine that we will miss any of them!

TheMalcolmConnection 03-13-2005 09:07 PM

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

This is how I see it... we will miss them until we have other players step in for them just like last year.

I'm suprised that the who's more important Pierce/Smoot discussions were overwhelming for Pierce, now that they're both gone Smoot has a slight edge.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

i put smoot because antonio pierce was a product of the system, and lemar marshall will be too. smoot is a better corner than walt harris, and while walt harris probably will be a solid #2 corner, smoot is younger than him. l.c. was a good receiver, but him and moss are probably the same in terms of skill. moss and patten will do fine next year, but if you put in an option for none matt, i would've chosen none because we have players that will step up in their absence, and do the job just fine.

Re: Who will the Redskins miss the most?

The term miss indicates that there are posotive emotions given to someone. I dont think the redskins (team, fans, otherwise) will truly miss any one of these. Thats a term reserved for someone who can be hurt by another's absence, and i feel that the absence of a member of an organization whose beliefs are not fitting with the organization cannot hurt that organization. On winning teams players are willing to fire agents and take paycuts to stay with a team... on losing teams players want out of hefty contracts. There was something special about the gibbs teams of the past that other (winning) teams in the league have right now.... Pride... and it will be restored to washington.

Defiently Pierce whether or not you agree talent wise compared to the other's he's the 1 player we don't have a replacement for, Cole's-Moss, Smoot-Harris and Wild's, Pierce-Marshall?????????

I'd have to say Pierce although I am confident Williams can groom someone to take his place. Hope its Marshall. I agree with you on Smoot BossHog........I think Springs was the outstanding one in the secondary. Smoot did get burned on some big plays. Smoot reminds me of a young Deion.....'nuff said............

Thrash is a Gibbs kinda guy......may not have much speed, but hard working and tough.......

AND DON'T EVEN SAY THE NAME OF THAT WR THAT WENT TO THE JETS!!!!
