Brown & Howard both to the D?

Maybe its one or the other but we are mentioned as a possible trade suitor for the Defensive End of New Orleans. Not likely, but possibly a gardner for Howard trade... What do u guys think? Maybe Courtney Brown will effect this situation.

If we have Brown, & Howard to go with Lavar and Taylor. I really don't give a damn who plays Corner next year. Hell I could play corner with all the pressure that they would put on the qb :)

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

I think Howard is going to be getting a big contract. Plus the Saints would more than likely want a pick from us so I don't really see that happening.

it is good to see that we are exploring all options. I just hope by 12am tommrow we have courtney in a burgundy and gold uniform.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

That would be nice but I can't see us having the cap room to afford Howard. I'm pretty sure he carries a hefty guaranteed salary as a franchised player, especially since he signed his tender. I have a good feeling about Brown, though. Not only do I think we will signh him, I also think he will be quite good for us. Just have a feeling that after Williams made do with those much less talented D-line players last year, he will really be able to do some things with a guy with Courtney's talent.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

Not only that... the injuries that he got were pretty heavy-duty. Like I said in another post, the guy has just been unlucky.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

I can't imagine the circumstances under which we could sign Howard. I wish we could, but the cap room just isn't there. Also, with the franchise tag on him, the Saints must be looking for a lot in return.

Schneed10 03-15-2005 03:13 PM

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

We can't come close to affording him. His franchise tag number is 7.8 million, which would immediately hit our cap if we were to take him in a trade. At this point, we only have $2 million or so in cap room. If we trade Gardner, we'd have $4 million in room to work with. Still not enough.

I'd rather have Brown...

Even if we were to turn around and sign him long term (which we would certainly have to do), there would be just about no way of keeping his number low enough to fit on the team - and being able to sign him doesn't mean they would trade him to us. We'd need to give up too much to get him.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

Sounds like another Moss scenario... Not only that, we have some solid backups for at least the present.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

I would rather have Brown who is a free agent and cheaper than Howard who will cost more in compensation and cap room...

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

If we can hget Howard that would be superb.

He is one of the best all round DEs in the NFL.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

je suis le krunkd...but i dont think we need both of these guys. just brown will do. howard too expensive, brown should be cheaper...bring in a young DE through the draft in the 3rd or 4th round id say to groom behind brown, wynn, daniels, and the rest

I like that plan Big C.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

I think they need to spend our money on offense.

Big C 03-15-2005 04:50 PM

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

defense needs to make more big plays tho. with a pass rusher that creates fumbles and pressure, leading to more ints, etc.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

we only had 1 defensive td last year i believe, from pierce in the SF game...so def need more. if we want to be elite like the ravens, we need defensive scores to help the offense.

Its nice to score on defence but if thats what we are looking for to win games it will be another long season.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

Courtney brown at a good price would be huge for the defense. Not only would we not have to draft a DE but would give us two solid DE's assuming he and daniels stay healthy. Wether its mike williams or or another defensive player the signing of brown would be awesome.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

if the skins do sign brown i think it would definately be an interresting move. it's a gamble but if he's cheap, then i say go get him. he could really be just what the skins need. then with the first pick in the draft i would say it's either a wr or a cb.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

Darren Howard has reportedly just asked the Cowboys for a 6 yr, $33M deal with a $16M signing bonus!!!! I would say his asking price has just effectively let us know there is no chance he is heading to the Skins.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

Even though Brown has been nothing but a walking wounded I still like the idea of taking a chance on him. He's not going to break the D if he doesn't work out, but if he does work out... the D could be damn scary!

GoSkins! 03-15-2005 07:56 PM

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

If we could add Brown into the mix, we could then concentrate on adding a quality DT, Corner, and TE in the draft. Trading Gardner may give us a good draft to build some quality depth at some critical positions.
I'm not even going to comment on Howard because of the money (but with Snyder... you never know)

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

No way they get Howard too much cash, especially as thrifty as the skins have been this year. Brown should come cheap and he played with LA and his and Williams have the same agent, I am sure the agent has relayed a couple messages back and forth. Hopefully that will happen he can be better than any rookie if he stays healthy...

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

I would rather we go to the draft for DE. Erasmus James for instance. I got a feeling we will pick a LB with the 9th pick.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

drafted DEs tend to take about 3 years to develop, so the impact of that pick wouldn't be immediate most likely.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

If the New Orleans Saints agree to Howard for Gardner even up, then I'd suspect that Danny Boy had a very large caliber gun to the head of Saints' owner Tom "Boogie Boy" Benson during the negotiations.

I suspect that the asking price for Howard in terms of the deal he will command will be bigger than the deal given to Smoot or Pierce. That might make it difficult for the Skins to squeeze into the salary cap.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?
I think they need to spend our money on offense.
Actually, they've invested a fair amount of money in the offense this offseason, with the restructuring of Samuels' contract (which included a $15 million bonus), the signing of Casey Rabach ($5 million bonus) and David Patten ($3.5 million bonus), and the trade for Moss (who'll likely see a sizable bonus when the Skins give him a long-term deal-- supposedly with more total compensation than the deal Coles received 2 years ago).

When you take into account the money spent on Brunell and Portis last season, and factor in the cap hit from Coles' trade this season, it's hard to justify pouring more cap money into the offense.

The Skins are trying to make up for the losses of Pierce and Smoot on the defensive side, and they've needed to solidify the D-line for some time now, so I can see why they're pursuing defensive talent.

Re: Brown & Howard both to the D?

I'm down for just DRAFTING into the offense. No more FA signings (as if there WAS someone worthy to sign).
