Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

On Monday, we will hopefully be 1-3, going into the bye week with a win, and having two weeks to prepare for the Cowboys. On Monday, Rob Jackson and Jarvis Jenkins both return to the locker room, their suspensions having been served. That means 2 players have to go. Is it a lock that both players come from the positions that Jenkins and Jackson are returning too? Or could an offensive player be one of the unlucky ones. I think the guys on the bubble include:
Royster,
Thompson (could he go back to the practice squad?)
Potter if Kai is healthy probably fills one.
Merling?
Tapp - I think he has his spot locked.

Any other names?
Will we be better with Jackson back in rotation with Orakpo?
Will Jenkins help the line tackle better?
inquiring minds want to know.

I bet 5 quatloos on Royster being a surprise cut.

I'm going with Potter and Merling.

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

well, here are our inactives:

Week 1
Pat White
Evan Royster
Jose Gumbs
Chris Neild
Rex Grossman
Brandon Meriweather
Josh LeRibeus

Week 2
Jordan Pugh
Jose Gumbs
Josh LeRibeus
Kai Forbath
Chris Neild
Rex Grossman
Evan Royster

Week 3
Chris Baker
Fred Davis
Kai Forbath
Rex Grossman
Jose Gumbs
Josh LeRibeus
Evan Royster

based on that, royster, gumbs, and leribeus are the most likely (outside potter). we still wasted a draft pick on leribeus though, so...

i'd guess potter and gumbs. if he were any good, he would have been on the field by now. I mean, if he can't play in this secondary, god help him.

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

The kicker and probably Merling. Although I could also see Neild as a possibilty.

Why are people saying Potter? You have to have a kicker. If you're cutting Potter, it's for Kai

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

Whoever we cut won't be missed. Hopefully Jenkins somehow energizes the d line. Not something to bet on but could happen. Jackson is more interesting. I think the defense is at a point where any standout needs to play a lot. What if Jackson makes some big plays like last year? Do you sit orakpo?
Why are people saying Potter? You have to have a kicker. If you're cutting Potter, it's for Kai
cause we don't need 2 kickers and 2 extra weeks should be enough for kai to be good to go. if there's some issue there (injury worse than most people think etc), please let us know.

Maybe I wasn't clear. People are saying we're going to cut Potter for either Jenkins or Jackson. What I'm saying is as soon as Forbath is healthy, which could be this weekend, Potter is gone. So I mean I guess if you lumped Forbath, Jackson, and Jenkins together then then yeah Potter put in that group of players who will likely be cut.

Monkeydad 09-27-2013 10:55 AM

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

You're over-complicating it, Smoot. We need to free up 2 roster spots to put these guys back in. Potter will be one of the cuts. We're not trading football cards, we just need 2 spots freed up. We might need Potter this week but after that, we should be in the clear to dump him to make room for Jackson or Jenkins.

Potter and Gumbs. If Kai is not healthy, it gets a little difficult to choose the second.

He has until October 13 to get healthy, so Forbath should be fine by then.

rotate based on down and distance imo. rak may just be a pass rush specialist at this point although i think with the right coaching and tailored d scheme he could become a t suggs type player.

rak is also getting his game feet back under him.

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

I know a lot of the focus was on Potter and one other getting cut, but does anyone else think it's worth keeping Potter as a kickoff specialist since we know he can kick it out of the endzone consistently?

If we were to keep him, I think Merling and possibly Gumbs

JoeRedskin 09-30-2013 01:08 PM

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

I think Gumbs is gone certainly - just based on the weekly inactives.

As for the second cut, either Mehrling or Potter. If Potter survives the bye week b/c Kai still hurting or not fully recovered (i.e. we had to cut Gumbs and some other position player like Mehrling), may as well keep Potter and relieve Kai of kick off duties altogether. Not like anyone we cut at the back-end can't be replaced with a street vet.

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

Gumbs makes sense. What will be interesting if that happens is who on the active roster will then become a regular inactive. Could be someone like Chris Thompson if things keep up the way they're going for him

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

Potter and Gumbs.

Would've dumped Royster, but Morris has the rib injury and we can't trust CThompson yet as a reliable 3rdline option.

Biggest hope is that after the bye, our D-line becomes our strength again. With Cofield playing hungry / healthy again, and J.Jenkins / RJax with something to prove -- we could have a mean pass rush and at least stop the run like years past. Our runD hasn't been the same w/o Carriker, but a healthy Jenkins may help.

Also think Fletch better get his act together, or we should transition Barnett to more and more playing time. Fletchers slow decline has often missed headlines out of respect for his leadership.

I think Fletch has been generally terrible. I only notice him when he's missing a tackle which is pretty often these days. Sad face.

Fletch is past his prime. Dude is gonna go out like a dud. Should've hung it up after last season.

I know some have refused to see it but Fletcher has been on the downward slide for a couple of years. But he also seems to rally as a season goes on so let's hope he's got one more good run in him.

Its Chris Cooley part deux

Fletcher didn't play that good in the first half of last season but he looked like he found the fountain of youth in the second half last year. We might not be so lucky this year, but I think we can all agree this will probably be Fletch's last season with the Redskins.

I still miss Cooley. Wish he had more in the tank and didn't get so beat up, he went out at a pretty young age.

For the record, Fletch led the team with 10 tackles, 7 solo. Riley had 9, 7 solo.

Re: Jenkins and Jackson Return ... who do you cut?

Merling, Potter, Gumbs, and Murphy would be my candidates for roster moves. Through Rex in there too for a person who could be moved.

Carrying 3 QBs and 3 kickers seems a bit much for a 1-3 team with help needed on teams and defense.

Are there any roster moves that will may make in the bye?

We have two kickers (Rocca is a punter not a kicker) because Forbath is hurt. We cannot afford to let Potter go until Forbath is healthy. And with both our starting and backup QBs coming off injuries (though I know Cousins' injury wasn't that bad), it is not wise to let Rex go. I'm sure the roster spots will come from Thompson (who I think is pretty useless) and somewhere in the d-line.

I think...
Merling gone. I don't like seeing Golston out there. Can't wait for Jenkins.
Rex gone. I don't see why he has held a clipboard for 2 yrs. easiest damn job and way to make $1million. If ever we lose Kirk and rob, the season wouldn't matter anyhow plus he's not even dressed to play anyhow.

Fletch was second in missed tackles with 7.

I honestly didn't need an explanation of our kickers. I get it. My hope is Kai is healthy enough to go ahead and cut Potter for the bye week and if we need to bring him back for the Dallas game then another move can be made, or maybe they can put him on the PS just so they have a guy to do special teams work. BTW can we bring in a punter for a workout, Sav isn't really getting it done anymore.

As far as the QB goes. I understand you POV, but at this point what is Rex really doing? III and Cousins are healthy, and most guys are usually coming off some kind of injury. It's not like we couldn't resign him if need be, and he is never active. He is always wearing street clothes.

But like I said, I see Merling and a DB or even Thompson (like you pointed out) as being players that could be expendable with the return of key pieces of our defense.

And the answer is Potter and Merling per Grant Paulsen.
