Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
The Washington Post reports the following:
According to sources familiar with Moss's extension negotiations, the former Jet will receive a multiyear contract averaging more than $5 million annually, plus guarantees of more than $10 million. Moss is scheduled to make about $450,00 this season. Last week, Moss's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to comment until negotiations are complete. . . . I wonder, how in the world did Santana Moss, guy slated to be the Jets’ number three wideout this season, manage to get a contract worth in excess of $5 million per season? Peerless Price and Laveranues Coles got seven year contracts worth $5 million per season in 2003. Santana Moss has NEVER produced the kind of numbers Price and Coles put up for the Bills and Jets respectively. After thinking long and hard about the decision to let Smoot and Pierce go during free agency, I came to accept the front office’s decision to let them go. We need to show some restraint in free agency (even when dealing with Redskins like Pierce and Smoot). It’s painful to watch guys like Smoot go to another team, but the salary cap forces us to lose key personnel. So, as much as I hated to see them leave the team, I can understand why the front office didn’t give big contract extensions to Smoot and Pierce. HOWEVER, I cannot for the life of me understand why we let guys like Smoot and Pierce go to other teams in the name of preserving our cap situation, while signing Santana Moss to a monster deal. We can’t say we’re going cap-conservative and then shoot our cap load on a player like Santana Moss. I have no doubt that Santana Moss has the potential to become a very solid wideout, but thus far he has been anything but solid. He has produced one, count ‘em, one good season. And that one, single, solitary season doesn’t justify giving him a contract that is purportedly going to be worth more than what Torry Holt got from the Rams. Maybe Gibbs should stick to his forte (coaching), and the ‘Skins should get a real GM. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
the money thing i think is a snyder issue and he's always gonna over pay because he owns the richest team in SPORTS period and money to him is not an object.

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
This is bad - he's not worth it. UGH.

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
damn, i hope that story is wrong... really really wrong...

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
The only thing that matters is the guarenteed money and how it affect's the cap long term. Moss has the ability to be a big time reciever for us, he had an outstanding season in 2003 his first year as a primary target for Pennington, this past season Pennington couldn't throw the ball downfield which I am sure hindered Moss's production. If this deal is true it doesn't remotly come close to the stupidity that is the Brunell signing.
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.
If we do this then it comes a close 2nd to the deal Brunell got. Let Moss play and prove his worth for us before we go handing him a big contract. |

Very true, let's not get hung up on the numbers until we know how they break down and will effect the cap. That being said, he'd better revert back to the Moss of 2003 when he had 1000 yards and 10 TDs real quick. For this kind of money, I think his days of returning punts are over. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
This is nuts...what the hell?
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
You know, if it was a decent-sized multi-year deal, I'd be happy. But more than Holt?! WTF... I definitely agree with you Matty that he can be a solid WR in the future, and locking him up long term to a modest-above average deal might not be a bad thing, but 5 MIL A YEAR?!

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
We need to find a list of the top paid wideouts to see where he would compare

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Basically to put it in perspective among all those numbers, he definitely does NOT warrant that kind of contract.
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
The breakdown is what's important here. Remember, Stephen Davis's (I think that's the correct punctuation) contract averaged over $10 million annually.
Santana will likely receive a sizable signing bonus, and a sizable roster bonus, and an outrageous pay increase in his 4th year of the deal. Which means we renegotiate before that. As for his numbers never matching up to Coles or Price, I'd like to avoid any Price comparisons, since he turned out to be a stiff in Atlanta. Two years ago, Santana had 74 catches for 1103 yards and 10 TD's. His numbers were down last year - but so was his starting QB. And the Jets were so enamored with last year's offense that they promptly fired the coordinator. Conversely, the year we made a grab for Coles, he had 15 more catches for 150 more yards (in four more starts) - and five less TD's. So the guy we got is two years younger, shows an affinity for both special teams (with a 12.0 yards/punt return) and the end zone, and went to Miami (doesn't matter to me, but SnC ought to be doing cartwheels). Let's not write him off as a bust of Brunell-ian proportions just yet. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
I'm not writing him off as a bust. In fact, I think he will be a promising #1/#2 receiver. I just don't think that right away he warrants that kind of contract.
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Brud,
I didn't bring up Price to say that he's great, just that his pre-big contract stats were impressive whereas Moss' are insufficient to warrant the kind of deal he'll be getting. But, fair enough criticism. It's true, the breakdown of Santana's contract numbers are very important, but the signing bonus alone is a little crazy. In any event, I don't think he's going to be a bust, but I doubt he'll warrant the kind of money he'll be getting paid. That's all. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
This is the guy Gibbs seems to want, and that's important to me. The right receiver in the right system is crucial - two examples:
Gary Clark - of the Phoenix Cardinals! Art Monk - of the New York Jets! |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
The key is the deal will average $5M per, if it's a 7 year deal the first few years will likely be very cap friendly at maybe $2-3 mill per, with alot of the money coming in the later years.

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
I agree with giving him a pay raise, but until moss can prove that he will consistently put up #1 wr numbers, he sure as hell ain't worth 5mil per/year no matter how it breaks down. I'd say he's worth a bit more than the givens deal but not a whole lot more. so hopefull it's more like a 7year $26 million instead of a 7year $35 million type of contract. I think when healthy Moss has a world of talent, but this type of spending and planning/hoping players will restructure is what pisses me off the most about our front office the past few years either giving.

Your exactly right. He'll get a lot of upfront money, then a small base salary. Then in a few years he'll redo his deal for another signing bonus. No redskin will ever play out their contract. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
He can't average just $2 million per year in the first few years if his signing bonus is $10 million per year. Signing bonuses can only be prorated against the cap for the first five years of the contract (in 2003 it was seven years and in 2004 it was six years). So, Moss should have a cap figure of about $3 million in his FIRST season and more and more each additional season.

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Gibbs needs to step down as GM, get somebody in there who knows how to pick players, because, obviously he doesn't.
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
If you've read the other threads about this, I think we've determined that Gibbs' selection style isn't all bad. Yes, he fired a blank on the Brunell hire but he definitely more than made up for it in his signings last year AND this season. Also, after reading the Cerrato interview, if anything, I might re-evaluate my scouts.
I'm not going to start bashing them at all. I'm pleased with how things have been ran since Gibbs has gotten back. Again, with the exception of Brunell, we've made some very nice signings. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Everybody likes to focus on the negative, how about some of the positive acquisitions from last year under Gibbs?
Griffin, Springs, Portis, Cooley, Taylor, Washington just to name a few of the major ones. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
We paid most of them what they deserved at the time. All young, great players. Moss shouldn't require more than 2-3M a year on average to lock up. He should consider that a blessing.
Gibbs needs to step down as GM, get somebody in there who knows how to pick players, because, obviously he doesn't.
Gibbs is not a GM. And in his radio address with the fat stinking Tony, he addressed your very question. He said that there were plenty of good teams around the nfl that excel without a proper gm. Tony said, the Patriots have a GM. Joe laughed, and said, do you honestly think in an organization with Belichick, that the GM makes any important decisions. He also said that he runs the club just like charlie and his previous gm's. He is comfortable with the organizational layout, and it will not change. Somewhere there was a thread on here, or a hyperlink to an article discussing one obvious benefit of having a GM. It was during the Coles negotiations. The point was made that the Coles situation was mismanaged primarily because Joe and Danny were talking to Coles, and his agent. That a seasoned "Manager" would have been able to keep both sides civil. It could be argued that with a proper GM in that case, we could have saved $5 million. I say that because, Gibb's wouldnt have slipped up in his first conversation with Coles, and told him that he would trade him. Not taking into consideration at that point the cap hit. (Of course that conversation is mostly reported by Coles, not verified) Lets trade Gardner, Brunell, and handfull of pretzels for Casserly. |
Everybody likes to focus on the negative, how about some of the positive acquisitions from last year under Gibbs?
Griffin, Springs, Portis, Cooley, Taylor, Washington just to name a few of the major ones.
It's definately true that Gibbs did a FANTASTIC job for the most part last season in the free agency/draft additions to the team. BUT, it's not last season's moves were questioning; it's this season's moves - letting Coles, Smoot, and Pierce go while supposedly signing Moss to huge contract. I don't think we concentrate on the negative too much. Most Warpathers defends Gibbs on virtually every move he makes. IMHO it just seems that we concentrate on the negative because criticism of Gibbs garners so much attention (anger). |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Two years, and he's on the waiver wire. It's all about the guaranteed dollars, not the base salary. :oink:
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Im with you. Who sees Santana here in 2007??? Not me.
David Patten on the other hand. Something about him makes me think we should be really excited, and that we are all going to like him for 5 more years. |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
I'd love to see Patten turn into a Monk-esque person who we can just depend on to catch the ball and do his job. Being completely premature in my judgement, I'm going to say that he SEEMS like he is the Cornelius Griffin of the offense. (Hopefully) Gets the job done and has the character to go with it.

Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
I also agree Moss won't be here in a few years, especially if we sign Williams.

So isn't it a bit early to pass judgment on this off-season's moves so soon? |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Why do the Redskins seem to negotiate against themselves? The market for Moss is very lukewarm at best. His own team saw him as a #3 WR, yet the Skins will pay him 5 mil a season? You can tell by the overall leaguewide reaction to the coles/moss trade that the league as a whole does not have a lot of respect for Moss. Even with Coles bad foot the perception was that the Jets got the better of the trade. So how in the world would the redskins hand Moss a contract that is far above his market value? Then on the other hand they play hard ball with two of their own players when there is a market for them in the league. Puzzling...
|
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
Ok, from how I understand it, Gibbs is involved in the players the team chooses to pursue, but the money side is not handled by Gibbs. It is primarily handled by Snyder in conjunction with the cap expert. Not to say that Gibbs isn't involved, but he isn't really the one to blame (or praise) when it comes to contracts. Snyder pretty much made himself a billionaire from nothing, so I'm sure he knows about how to manage money.
If I hear one more person say "we need a GM" I think I'm gonna puke...oh wait... :vomit-smi As for this rumoured contract for Moss, I agree that it is too rich for what he has shown, especially since he is already on the team, but I do agree with locking him up long-term. Question: How many big seasons (1000+ yards) did Coles have when we took him from the Jets? ONE! But then again, I realize we had to give him a big contract to keep the Jets from matching....and we already have Moss... |

I, for one, NEVER said the 2004 offseason moves were bad. I thought then and still think now Gibbs did a hell of a job in free agency and the draft. But, I do recall, as you pointed out, that a few people were concerned about Griffin and Springs. As for passing judgment on this offseason's moves, it is a bit early. But, even you were sad to see Smoot go. Plus, I highly doubt it's too early to say we overpaid for Moss. Moss could turn out to be a great wideout (which I doubt), but the market right now (IMHO) doesn't warrant giving him a $10 million signing bonus. Plaxico got a $8 million signing bonus. In my mind, the market for Plaxico (even though it was sluggish) was much more intense than any market would have been more Moss. |

I agree. I think the 'Skins will go for a CB with their top pick. |

Coles' numbers and durability were much more solid when we signed him than Moss' are now. Moreover, as of now, Coles has started 67 games (38 more than Moss), caught 342 passes (192 more than Moss) for 4656 yards (2,240 more than Moss), 20 TDs (1 more than Moss), and 70 passes (31 more than Moss) for 20 yards or more. Both Moss and Coles wanted out of their organizations. Given the above stats, who got the better end of the deal? |
Re: Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?
I'd be fine with a CB. I just think that if Williams is available we should take him.
